I find that after disabling Indexing on my drive that searchindex.exe was still running even after restart.
Disable it by:
WindowsKey+R --> Services.msc --> Find "Windows Search" and stop the process then disable it.
It's given my quite a speed boost on this laptop + better battery life.

wow, that really was some bad engrish.

Ok I'll start again.
I was noticing that windows vista on my gf's laptop was very slow, even after upgrading it to 2gb of ram.
So, after some investigation I found that a process call searchindex.exe was constantly accessing the hard drive, meaning that any other applications would load very slowly.
To fix this I tried disabling windows search indexing (or something called that), but it didn't stop the process.
Buy, by going into the "services list" services.msc, I found that by stopping the process windows search and then disabling it that my trouble where over.
In short, disable windows search ---> Gain speed

Install XP -> gain speed
