Prizes:
1st: 60% of total pot
2nd: 30% of total pot
3rd: 10% of total pot

Top 3 teams will get sponsor prizes, at this stage FirstGames is willing to giv eout free copies of SSF4 when it release but yet to confirm. Giga will be giving away free gaming time for internet or Console use.

Note:
Cash pot is the amount after paying off the venue.
For those who wish to order SSF4 FirstGames will be available on the day to take pre order, they will be giving us a really good price!!!!

Consoles
Giga will provide the following:

3x LCD monitors with HDMI and VGA inputs.
1 x projector
1 x PS3 with SF4 and HRAP stick.
1 x PS3

People are invited to BYO consoles, controllers, games and/or TVs. A third PS3 console with another 2x TE stick and SF4 would be much appreciated, for use on the third monitor.

If you're bringing anything, please post below so that others are aware of what's going on.

*3x TE stick or similar for the PS3
(1 TE stick - Skullator)
(1 TE stick - Smoof) >>> thanks.
(1 HRAP stick - Lenny)

*1 x SF4 game PS3
(sorted - Skullator)

SF4 Team Tournament
The tournament will be run using the a-cho 2-on-2 format (where everyone plays). In this format, Player A from each team will face-off, followed by Player B from each team. If at the end of these games the scores are 1-1, a tie-breaker will be played between the winners of the first 2 games.

Team order can be decided by the players, and double blind selection is available by request.

People will be asked to form their teams on the day - if you don't have a team, rock up and we'll find one for you. If you don't approach me with team details when called, you will be assigned a teammate at random.

The SF4 team tournament will start at 2:00PM sharp.

Match rulse are yet to be decide as we may have time issues for double elimination, (update once decided)

Everyone must select 1 character to use for the duration of the tournament.

Note Rules: the rules would be similar to the Nationals last year unless stated above so please familiarize yourself with the rules.

Is there a price for people who just want to spectate, yet play casuals on the other consoles not being used for the tourney?

Also Lenny has only an HRAP for the PS3.  Not a TE stick.

We will most likely be running two setups for this but depends on number of entrants, we can run 3 if we have to.
As for spectating, there is no fee. Casual play will come after the tournament, if you have your own console and I might be able to sort a monitor for you with a minimal fee.

I will update Lenny's TE stick above. ty.

The entry fee may seem a bit higher than usual, though it will make our 1st pot higher.
For the players above who I have signed up have any issues with the price and would like to cancel the sign up let me know. I may reconsider the entry fee but it will mean the prize pot is smaller.
And as mentioned I will get prizes for 2nd and 3rd place as well.

I'm guessing it's per team for the entry, or $20 for each person?

Hmmm, that doesn't make sense.  You can't enter a team tourney by yourself ::)

So my guess is it is either $20 team entry.  Need Andy to confirm/clear up this.

TBH for 20 bucks per person the pot should be split across the top 3 spots 60-20-10 imo.

20 is pretty steep given the range of skill in our small community, and does little to encourage everyone to join in.

Just my 2 cents.

But then that wouldn't be a competition Euan, more like a "Hey we made top three, lets share the gold and screw silver and bronze!"

Prizes: At this stage we have confirmed cash Prize for the winning team, though if I manage to get some sponsors then we might be able to get some item prize for 2nd and 3rd place. The cash Prize will depend on the number of entrants, I will take about $$$ from the pot to pay for the venue and the rest will be the cash prize the more entrants = the higher the pot. Example: 20 entrants = $300 cash prize for winning team, split for the two $150 each.

One cash prize does seem silly, now there is even less incentive for people to sign up.  If it is also 20 each person (or even tea), then there should be plenty for a split pot.  Even marvel with a smaller base had a split pot ;)

Thanks for all the feed back guys and I have taken your thoughts and put them into ACTION!!! We will split the pot to 60/30/10, on top of this I WILL be giving out extra item prizes from sponsors, such as free street fighter gaming time at Giga/ internet and FirstGames are interested in sponsoring, I have meet with them today and they will be giving out credits for a couple free copy of Super Street Fighter 4 when it releases.

updated first page with the new Prizes decision and thanks to Smoof for the TE.
cheers.

Well if you think 10% would cover the venue etc, you could do 60/20/10. I can help with whatever you want on the day as well. And if we get heaps of people you think maybe we could do 3v3? Then we'd be like a scrub version of the japanese nationals.

3v3 would be cool, but realistically, given our playerbase, were better off going with 2v2 and seeing how that works out before discussing bigger teams.

The cash pot is decide after paying off the Venue.

Yeah 3v3 would be lotsa fun though as Bill mention our player base are not as large... BUT its our Tournament, we can do whatever we want if we have a good player turnout.
But for now, we will stick to what it is.

Updated first page with map and address for the venue, I have updated how the prize pot is calculated.

OKay, Just an update. FirstGames is officially our sponsor for this event, they will provide sponsor prizes as mentioned on teh first page.

Pre-Orders fro games are available on the day, so turn up and you will get a good deal, especially for Super Street Fighter 4. You won't find the price they give anywhere else.

Personally I question the need for sponsors for this event, considering it will lessen the possibility of sponsorship on other events which tie into the actual release of SSFIV.

Just to satisfy your need for this this, this was Giga's idea in getting FirstGames as sponsor and it was myself and Giga who both approach FirstGames for the sponsorship as they had businese relations already. I don't see any complications here? I am sure if we are to approach them again for teh Nations it will be much easier if they previously have experience as sponsorship for us as they will know that we have what it takes.

As a community we should be careful with wearing out the sponsors, since we have such a small base of people that it affects. If there are 20 of us and first games gives away 2 copies of SSFIV for a fairly random tournament (that from my understanding has a large entrance fee and doesn't really have much payback for the community other than it happening, which begs the question of why the high price?), that's 10% of the people that would be influenced by the advertising out right away. Not to mention that most of the people won't buy from firstgames even when we tell them that it's a really great place to buy stuff due to other reasons entirely.

Do you then think that for another event on the release of SSFIV first games will give away another 2 copies? Our community is just too small to be worth it for advertisers to be giving out games willy nilly when the advertising doesn't reach much further than the people they are already giving the games to.

Basically I think we need to be thinking towards a longer term, more cohesive plan, rather than just "hey I can run X tournament and charge lots and get sponsors" with no real goal.

Point taken thought you're saying a small tournament? how much bigger do you think we can get as a community? I am thinking of building a relationship with our sponsors and in hoping to have some prizes to attract more people, you're talking about cost being high but you're not thinking about what people expect to be an actual prize to actually motivate them to join in and put some effort and practicing/ preparing for it. You as a site owner should be first to help out motivate people and not put negative thoughts all throughout the thread. There are always concerns and risk in hosting such events but if everyone just sits there and do nothing you will achive nothing. Our sponsors know exactly what our situation is and they are willing to help out with some prizes and I believe as a communtiy we should be thankful for such as they are not just in for selling their games, its an IMAGE for businese.
If you're just sticking with your miniture minds all day with miniture gatherings by all means. We don't have the resource to give away $1k prize, the only way to make it look any good is to increase the entry fee abit but in return we are giving away quiet decent prizes, cash and item prizes.

You say no realy goal? my goal is to boost the competitiveness in this community, which many of us lacks, with no motivation to improve but just go with the flow.  WE will never have a chance in any real tournaments apart from in NZ with such thoughts.

Now shall we get on with things?

My argument is that regardless of prize, most of the same people we already know will show up anyway. You could have the prize being a pack of tic tacs and probably the same crew would show up, since most of us are in it for the competition, not the prizes.

The only tournaments that are going to attract new people are ones which have prizes for the people that don't get top 3, otherwise the entry fee is going to make them just say "why bother?"

Making events that only the current people will attend isn't furthering anything, except making our community more insular and incestuous, especially if only a subset of THOSE people will show up due to the entry fee being double what our nats were!

On a different note I do believe Nats should have been at least $20. I think it should be at least $30 this year. If it's meant to be a professionally run tournament to claim the national champion.

Why?

A lower entry fee entices people that may not otherwise enter a tournament to at least think about it.

If your answer is that the top people should get lots of money, I again ask why? If they are in it for the money then I'm afraid they've picked the wrong thing to spend their time on.

If you don't think the prizes were really generous then I really don't know what else could have been done.

On a different note I do believe Nats should have been at least $20. I think it should be at least $30 this year. If it's meant to be a professionally run tournament to claim the national champion.

fuck that. id rather go to yifans and then go to k-dizzle afterwards for a feed

Why?

A lower entry fee entices people that may not otherwise enter a tournament to at least think about it.

Nationals will always be run as cheap as possible.  TBH the most that we would charge for it would be $10-00 at this point unless something changes drastically that will force us to change this.

The idea behind the Nats is to get as many people as we can into the tournament so that we can draw more people to the site.  The larger the site gets the bigger our community gets.  The bigger our community gets the more our overall skill level increases.  And when we finally have enough people playing with a high enough skill level to make us look good on the world stage, we can really start to market fighting games for proffessional sponsorship.

Are FirstGames gonna be cool with continued sponsorship for our other stuff?  If they are gonna be there at the tourney that would be great cause I would love to have some dialogue with them face to face.

I like that you have a goal to improve peoples skill levels in the game Andy and get us more competitive, but I dunno if this will do it.  For me this seems more about the hardout guys going hardout I guess.  I think we need to look at peering people up in a way that a more experienced person can help a less experienced person.

I think we need to start having more grinders too.  I'm keen to do another big saturday at maybe Giga sometime soon?  Can't have enough games can we?

In other news I think I am getting back into SFIV.  I'm learning Sim and really enjoying mucking around with him.  Need to get some practice in against peeps though.  I have got a hold of the Arturo podcast that he did with Gootecks and that has GREAT info on it.

I see the concerns about sponsorships but I don't see why they wouldn't sponsor us again IF we show them that as a community we are one and will support each other.

I understand that the entry fee may look high at this stage, but think about how long the game has been out? this is pushing the players to actually train up and get serious about things. I honestly think $20 ain't that much for a good 6 hours of tournament experience. Of course we all have our own thoughts with regards to this, I just want to tell the people out there that when we do these things we mean business and hoping to encourage these people participate and work hard for their goals. Motivation comes from rivalry, prizes and how much effort you put into getting what you deserve.
One thing I can consider is that if we get enought entrants I can lower the price on teh spot as I am only ensuring the payment of the venue and having some of that left to give away as prize money.

Its hard to pair people up as there will always be bias involve or somewhat and random pairing won't work either as it could also have the potential issue,  therefore I left it to the player's decision.  For those who don't have a partner, just turn up and we will pair u up with someone as there will be many who also have no partner.
This tournament may seem it is for hardout people and hence why it is a 2v2, if I were to do a normal tournament I will not go the way I have now. The game is getting near its end as SSF4 is on the way so I guess its a good time to do something different and encourage, motivat players to fight for life. xD

I agree with Mason about the Nationals being a higher price as it IS a professional tournament. It will solve alot of our finance issues.

Updated on teh discussion thread, thanks for the support.

I'll also add that if we get over 26 Entrants which we may or may not, I give a $5 discount to every entrant on entry fee which makes it only $30 per team. As this should be enought for an okay cash prize along with sponsor prizes and to enable me to pay of the venue.

Everyone must select 1 character to use for the duration of the tournament.

Seems a bit redundant. Doesn't affect me personally, since we know who ill be using regardless, but some people might have a problem with it.

This concerns me a bit having double elimination, at first this was my thought but I think we may run out of time due to team tournament. I am thinking of doing first to 5 rounds? so this can save us some time... what do you guys think? single elimination but  setting the round counts to 5.

This rule won't change, many reasons behind this and we won't argue about it la. On your first match you pick ONE char for the whole tournament, at this time you can choose to have double blind but after that you stick with teh char you chosed throughtout the tournament.

Single elim with 5 rounds sounds fine Andy, I was thinking about the time too, which is why I asked.
Also I kind of want to watch as much play as I can.... with double elim we would definitely be rushing matches through the entire time on 3 rigs, no breathing room.

Single character rule is the best thing since sliced bread.
SFIV vanilla is not balanced. Counter picking is real. Counter picking is also real lame.

I can understand the Japanese's mentality behind the SBO single elim \ 1 character format.
- No oppurtunity for counter picking, you roll with your characters strengths and weaknesses till death, you do not abandon ship.
- Limited downloading of the others players style allowed, you have to adapt DURING the match.

I think that 5 rounds is a bad setup for the tourney. Some characters are helped more than others when playing 3/5 rounds instead of 2/3. I think first to 2 games playing 2/3 rounds single elim would be the best way to go.

I love those quotes HAHAHHA

I do agree with the same char is a bit lame for a 2v2 but with our current scene we don't really have teh strenght to make everyone have a different char... thats why I mention you can have teh same char on one team.

Why would you say this is going to be a sagay tournament? is sagay that hard? I mean at our current level in gameplay I have yet to see a sagay that actually whipps everyones ass with no tomorrow. He is not unstopable, just learn to play the gay style :)

So what would you guys vote for?

I agree on the best of 3 format aswell.

And its the same as the format youve got andy, but instead of being whoever wins 3 rounds out of 5 takes the game, its whoever wins 2 out of 3.

Likewise, whoever wins 2/3 games wins the set.

I think it works better for 2v2 as well, since then each team member has an equal part in the match if one of them loses. With a best of 5 setup, it means one player ends up playing more than the other one if they lose. Which doesnt seem quite right. Its not BAD, its just not quite right.

What I mean by 5 rounds is that we have ONE game but set the count of rounds to 5. One player must win 5 rounds in order to win that game adn they ONLY have ONE game. This I thought to be quicker?

Let me know what you guys prefer, as we can change this as we please to suit the tournament and players.

It's too hard to say which is better, doing games and sets I think is more forgiving, but also more complicated to spectate\manage and slower....

Either option is good imo.

The way i invisioned it was:

There are two players on each team. Player A, and Player B on one team, and Player 1 and Player 2 on the other team.

Games are best of 3. (ie. first player to win 2 rounds wins the game. Obviously)

Are you thinking the same thing, except best of 5, and no repeated sets?

That would be quicker, but i dunno. Something about best of 5 doesnt sit right with me.

Or do this way:

Team 1 Player A plays against Team 2 Player A
Team 1 Player B plays against Team 2 Player B

If Team 1 wins both matches Team 1win, If Team 2 wins both matches Team 2 Wins.

If bothh Teams win 1 game each, then the winners from each team face off to determine who is the overall winner of the set.

That is a quick easy method.  Nuff said.

  • Player B wins -> Team A+B wins the set.
  • Repeat until one team has won 2 sets.

Sounds dumb to me lol, SBO is more dramatic to watch
(Bam your done son, you aint getting back in that chair, no second chances)

My vote is with smoof, exactly like SBO... but really that also means no team stacking double characters... but I get the point about our community not being strong enough. Perhaps Nzism members can't team stack, but teams which include a competitor who doesn't use this forum can? How does that sound?

I'm sure at the end of the day we can all agree on it being lame...

This si exactly what I have planned for us.

so for example:
Team 1 Player A plays against Team 2 Player A - Team 1 play A wins, the match consist of the below rounds:

just like the finals in world champs SF4 in San francisco

Definitely don't go with that format . It favours characters who benefit from having lots of super metre. Please no.

Just as long as its 2/3 round games I will be happy. Single elim is great when you have a skilled community. Not so much for a community as small and well...lacking as ours.

Yes I remember me and Ben not being happy about the final at the last Giga comp, where it was changed to 3/5 rounds in the final. This in general benefits Zangief (Kevin). If the matches before the final are 2/3 then the final should also be 2/3. You can just have more sets.

So IMO, all games should be Player 1A and 2A play eachother 2/3 rounds, 2/3 games; THEN Player 1B and 2B play eachother 2/3 rounds, 2/3 games.

If one team wins both games they move on, if 1 player from each team wins the winners play eachother in the same format to see who moves on.

It's OK to change the final to 2/3 rounds, 3/5 (or 4/7 whatever) games, but do not change the rounds.

I dont think the parts in bold are necessary. Without them, a set becomes 1A vs 2A (1 game) 1B vs 2B (1 game) and potentially the winners of each game fighting it out eg. 1A vs 2B (1 game).

3 games total. A clear winner decided. Because its so short, it gives minimal time to adjust to your opponent. It means players have to be on the ball from the get-go, because every hit is going to count.

This might be TOO short for some people, and i understand that. Having matches as best 2/3 sets (assuming the sets are like this) would be fine.

But i totally agree that the rounds should be best 2/3 for the WHOLE competition. Change the number of games/sets. But ROUNDS should be best 2/3.

Yeah you're right Will, and that's how the Jap comps go iirc. It's just people might not be happy with too short games, but increasing to 3/5 rounds will annoy people more as it's more standard to have 2/3 rounds. I'm all for what you said, but at least 2/3 rounds, 2/3 games is more standard than 3/5 rounds, 1 game.

Edit: Yeah Andy I'd be happy with that, see what the others have to say.
