Telstra Clear can't get cable to where I'm moving to (Halswell Christchurch, where I'm at atm) so I'd have to stick with standard adsl with them. Max download of approx 7Mbs
Apparently you can't get adsl2+ here according to them. But according wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITU_G.992.5#New_Zealand
And Slingshot say I already have ADSL2+ with Telstra Clear ???
And Telecom say that Halswell doesn't have adsl2+:
http://www.telecom.co.nz/adsltwoplus
But they will get it by Sept 2011. Whup de shit ::)
But then again they could mean just through them which would be smart to say since orcon, vodaphone and a few other providers are suppling adsl2+ where telecom aren't.
So basically I want to know who is right? Or how do I find out for sure without the hassle of switching ISPs just to find out. I know from my address I'm not being supplied I rarely get close to 7mbps. Right now:
And out of interest who are you guys with and who do you think is the best?
This is what my parents are on, its adsl2+ though the cap for them is 5gb.

Your speed certainly doesnt LOOK like adsl2. But who am i to comment, given that i actually know absolutely nothing about it.
your ping is less than 50, so you probably have ADSL2, unless you had your interleaving 'secretly' turned off at some stage.

Smoof always win
So is it the Ping that affects online play? The lower the better right?
Yup, so if you have 20-40ms to somebody in auckland it means you can play some relatively lag free 3S on ggpo which is better than nothing ;)
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/723919807.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
this is mine by Xnet! fucking gay!
That is just bloody sad mike, lol.
Oh, and also not only ping but upload speed needs to be good too.
yes ping dont mean anything if your upload speed is sucky sucky .
You want a good upload speed , then you can get interleaving turned off to get a better ping but will result in a more unstable line
Rofl Mike. No wonder you always lag on PSN.
Mine's no better than mike's... same ISP too... hmm...
hmm I'll upload mine later tonight, I'm with a company called Megatel, I believe they run off the Telstra lines??? Did a traceroute once and I think it went to Telstra, anyways its adsl 2 supported and with 90 Gigs for $70 NZD/ month for me.
Uplaod and download speed is set to the maximum my line can take and that erally depends on how far I am away from the exchange etc.
But I think I get no lag playing SF4 online with some of the guys here who has a decent connection as well. Up with the speed test when I get home.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/724732312.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
is adsl just shit for upload?
cos mines at least 2 up
Upload is always going to be inherently balls with ADSL, as it's asymmetric

How accurate are these tests...does anyone know?
My results using speedtest.net were miserable (yet using the net was fine)...so I called my ISP and told them.
They gave me a link to http://speedtest.telstraclear.co.nz/ to try as they are my ISP and my results were hugely different!?
If any Telstra custys wanna try it out here's the details...
Username: speedtest
Password: bugatti
These were my results...

Intra-ISP connections will get you full speeds, so while that is the 'true' speed of your internet, it's really not what you'll realistically see. For example, most of the connections within NZ actually get routed through los angeles because telecom has some ridiculous fees for crossing certain boundaries in NZ. This makes things slow. It's also probably what you see when you take the other speed test.
Ahhh...ok.
So is that whole "routed through L.A." thing a particular ISP thing?
Like would being with a different ISP get me better games with other countries?
Right now I get NZ, Aus, Japan and Ireland games with pretty good connections...but bad connections with any of my mates anywhere else in the world.
Every ISP has a different routing table, so sometimes you might find you have a shit connection to one particular server in AU when someone else has no problems. While you may find some bad connections, you will find some bad connections with almost any ISP.
The "routing through LA" thing is for NZ -> NZ connections.
just do a tracert to the IP address or URL address eg: telecom.co.nz that wil show you your routing/hops.
Wish I could play at work check it out below lol

46meg up and higher up than down is rediculous lol
Nice, need some business plan goodness for all!
Im with megatel, 5mb DL and 0.8mb UL which is standard for gaming 80 ms ping in AUckland...I remember xnet in manurewa was 2mb UL and 7mb DL? same for xtra too when I was last with them 2 years back...oh well will stick it out with megatel reasonable price of $105 monthly phone and wired broadband with 0.14 p/minute national calls etc 34cents p/min for cells calls...
Just got Adsl 2 installed 2 days ago over here in the dirty south lol

And this is at 7am. I bet it would be even lower in the afternoon or night. NZ has the worst internet, and it's a shame because Xnet used to actually be good. Hey, when do you guys think Auckland will see fiber optic?
I was previously on a better plan with Xtra, which was: inferior download to my current speed, but 90-120kbps upload. Wasn't worth it, what with being more expensive and all.
This is worrying:

also I tried to play team fortress 2 yesterday and got terrible choke to the point of unplayability, but that could be because it's now school + uni holidays and I'm pretty much in student hell
fucking terrible
dunno if changing isp will help :/
i hve been told by xtra and xnet in the last 10yrs tat, i get shitting connectin due to living too far from the exchange : (

Whoa that's pretty bad mine is better Download with Vodafone then telecom. But telecom had better upload.
Telecom was like 9mbps DL, 1mb UL.

Ben,
Well aparently my ISP MegaTel has been affect by Telecom's UBA issue where they jammed majority of their customers bandwidth into one backbone, Telstra which is where my ISP buys their lines from gets a small bite of the pie from Telstra's small portion.
So hence my internet speed is like this....
Yes its VERY BAD and I nearly threw a chair onto my Monitor last night after DC'ing 5 times during a raid in WoW :(
Also Mason... WTF is that your home speed? or work?, Also guys can you post the TIME that the results u guys get?
Usually peak outs 2pm till 2 am are when ISP will cap your speed, so thats the best time to test.
oh and here is my work speed :( can I play at work? k thanks !!!!
I did mine when i posted it.
fUCK MaSON! What isp you with g?
And omg look at work net. It's banger!
Also, the time is in the top right corner.
Yea Weazzy but its GMT.
If only it was possible to work out NZ time from GMT! Damn it all!
I did my work test at about 9:40 is AM? so it seems like you +12 hours to that which would be 9:40ish AM, which is the following day, which looks correct.

QUESTION:
Does anyone know where I can find NZ broadband standards? I want to check what is the minimum speed my ISP should be atleast providing me, if they can not provide the minimum, I have the rights to cancel my contract I believe... atm they won;t let me cancel :(
if its just adsl , 7mbit maximum line speed download , 0.7 mb upload maximum
most people dont get close to the maximum as it depends how far away from the exchange you are , condition of your phone line etc
adsl2+ is another story , dunno what the max speeds on that is .
no such thing as NZ broadband standards.
The performance of ADSL is based on about a million different things. You should bitch and moan instead and get a credit on your account. Thats what I did on Xnet before I gapped it.
Lol the one I did earlier was the uni internet of course.
This is what I get at home (and it's like 10pm so should be faster) :(
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1012394011.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I guess that's a good ping, especially since I haven't asked to turn off interleaving? I don't know these things.
that ping is about normal for ADSL2. provided you've got a clean line you could get it down to sub 10 ms, (LESS THAN ONE FRAME LAG ONLINE OMG)
Nah that ping is just better for quake live/cs and other FPS
aren't all the QL servers based in aussie anyway? I used to find that what ISP you were with was more important than whether you had interleaving or not back when I was playing FPS.
Yeah as soon as quake live came out I tried playing it hard but I was getting like 80 ping and that made me angry and not want to play anymore.
I am sure I read somewhere in the goverment papers that there is a broadband standard.
Reason I say so is that this standard is something that needs to be monitored or else any old jack can provide shit connection and charge people for it, stuck on contract etc etc. I do work in the industry, so I know at least that much, just havn't really digged into this much thats all.
just tried this now. could be worse

Yeah I've heard Vodafone isn't much better. I guess thats why I moved from them in the first place. -_-
It's probably your line itself looking at that ping thing. Or your exchange or something. Rather than
the provider (aren't most of them using telecom lines/hardware anyway?)
switched from telecom adventurer 20 gig to pro 40g, one of the differences being interleaving is off on the pro one....
