Kinda cool but it also made me wonder where in the timeline a lot of people on here started playing fighting games. For me it's right at the start there :-[ I used to play Karate Champ at the arcade in Rainbows End with it's dual stick controls and Yie Ar Kung Fu was one of the first games I had on my Amstrad CPC6128.

Space invaders @ Big AL's in tauranga. gamings in the blood. Some out of days when i was kid running down to the arcade centre , butterflies in my stomach then arriving at arcade huge arcade centre jizzing in my pants.. all the lights and sounds going off and i was the 1st 1 there lol. Then they brought gambling games in arcades, snappy viper and unlimited nudges. Wow! Were they here in auckz?
Karateka or IK I guess.
I remember when IK+ came out on the C64, so awsome!
Timeline is missing One Must Fall 2097 (1994). Used to thrash that game on my awesome PC, DX2-50, 8mb RAM and no video card, Windows 3.11!

World Warrior and Tekken 2!!!!
It was around Tekken 2' release though, when i really start playing. I woulda been like three yrs old when SF2 come out.
Does anyone know what the fighting game was called where one of the chars was a ninja, and i'm sure one of his specials he would say something like "Ninja Shadow" and then he'd turn invisible but you could still see his shadow on the ground i think. I was about 11 or 12 and i used to play it at my neighbours house on his commodore 64(? - maybe it was amiga, can't remember) cause we didn't get a family computer until i was like 17 (lol) and i think he had SF2 on it as well.
sf1 and IK on c64.
When I was 7yrs or there abouts, i would roll with my older cousins to the arcades, place was packed, i couldnt even see the screens then attauranga's very 1st arcades. They had defender then, that buck rogers space craft throwing out lazers and bombs, the BADDEST game sounds ever!

Body Blows on the Amiga. Unless it had a C64 port :)
Thanks Munta!
Wow, i did not remember how much of a SF2 ripoff it was.:P Apparently there was a DOS version too. But yeah it was Amiga.

Makes me feel so young. I only started in 1997ish, with Tekken 3 (first fighting game) and Soul Blade. Too young for anything else. I was born with Street Fighter 2 lol.
My first fighting game was Yie Ar Kung Fu on CPC6128 as well lol.
Astro wars back in 1982 on a game console same size as a toaster with a built-in screen, arcade stick and two buttons.
Which game do they play in the movie Bloodsport?
"Very good, but brick not hit back!!!!!"
Karate Champ

Someone didn't watch 3 Green bars ;D My first FG was either Pit Fighter or WW iirc. But I do remember that the very first game I played on my Megadrive back in 92 was SF2: Special Champion edition.
My first experience with fighting games would be sf2 in 93 summer holidays. I'd go with my cousins and we'd play in most of the takeaway shops in St Lukes/Mt Roskill. They use to yell at me whenever I pressed the 2p start lol.
I dunno what I would count as my first "fighting game". Probably Barbarian on the C64 in the late 80's or Karateka on the Apple 2 E at school in green screen, though that was only 1 player so might not count. (we also had wolfenstien the og 2D version as well) as well as IK+ on Amiga
I first played SF2 ww in a local arcade close to my school, a few months before Championship Edition came out. I try and pay homage to IK+ Karate Champ in 3 Green Bars whenever I can :)
I remember playing Way of the Exploding Fist on C64, not sure if it was in 85 or 86. Also remember it taking about half an hour to load :(
Mt first fighting game experience was the first Street Fighter. But during those days I was playing much more Double Dragon and Altered Beast.

I played that on ZX spectrum (48k) - great game!
Ok this is going back to when I was 5 but i remember what must have been the first vs fighter ever. Someone already said Karateka but that game wasn't really a vs fighter becuase you ran forward through stages and stopped to fight (like a side scroller). There was a game on The Apple 2 before that called 'swashbuckler' you controlled a pirate with a sword and you fought against the comp or another player..it had parry and thrust and block just like soul calibur but it was mad in 1981....I didnt discover it till yeas after that and hey i was 5...but that has to be the first.
Hmm. turns out i was wrong...swashbuckler cant be the first vs fighter cause it was single player only. Could have sworn it was 2 player too. Heres the wiki link

Maybe Yie Ar Kung Fu is the first one afterall!!??!!

Played all 3 - great stuff!
