Post by: stereomonkey on March 01, 2010, 05:45:40 PM
So umm, yeah.  Talk shit about it here.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/02/how-many-gigabytes-is-ffxiii-xbox-360-install/

QuoteThat’s a grand total of 18.3GB. In comparison the PS3 version of the game is 38GB.

It's not out in English till the 7th 9th, I preordered a Japanese copy and got it just after xmas.

Had the final boss down before new years.. 42 hours played.
Had 100% clear \ platinum trophy at 135~ hours played.

Really good game, I went as far as saying it was in my top3 games of last decade, along side Metal Gear Solid 4 and Super Smash Brothers Melee.
Definitely pick it up on release, it's a blast.

My copy, haha:

And my 100%:

And my lightning edition PS3 and new i7 rig... lol

Yep... I'm a FF Fanboy haha.

Oh yea good call, world release date is the 9th.. which may or may not translate to the 10th in NZ.

Only disappointing thing for PS3 owners will be if their copy doesn't include Japanese audio track.. which you can be pretty sure it wont considering the game is FULLY VOICED (everything, everyone, every cut of every convo is voiced, thats a first for an FF) and they are .FLAC files.. which are large...

So yeah it's worth owning a Jap copy just for the superior voice acting, but English voices are shaping up to be decent.
Not sure about the "My hands" American Idol \ whatever idol song replacing Kimi ga Irukara though...

Let me try to put it in terms which are not just me fanboying about how much I enjoyed it.

This game is not as good as FF7, it doesn't have as much side content, or a world map. (It does have a "Hyrule Field" type area towards the end of the game if you are familiar with ocarina of time)
However.. this game is JUST as groundbreaking as 7 was in terms of visuals, sound\voice acting, and sheer scope.
I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed running through 7 on my first play through.

Having said that.. I was not a huge fan of Playstation 2 FF's.
Everyone seemed to like X, but honestly it felt very lacking to me. XII I just flat out disliked due to the CTB \ semi real time combat system and dull lifeless endless masses of land you had to run through.

Final fantasy on the PS3 dicks all over the PS2's titles.

And what other JRPG's do we even have this generation?
Tales of vesperia is Xbox 360 only in english, I hear that's a good game.
Eternal Sonata is a piece of shit.
Valkyria Chronicles is great, one of the best games on PS3, but more strategy than RPG.

People calling it linear trash are either idiots daring to be unique, of the opinion that the only good games are online capable FPS's,  or one of those with underlying Squenix gripes.. it's the best rpg of this gen HANDS DOWN.

I use to like jrpgs (I think we had a gaint discussion on jrpg's in another thread somewhere a while ago) but now they drive me insane.  I didn't mind grinding to get to the end of a game back in the days but now it's a chore.  Oh, and I think they try to hard when it comes to story and visuals that it feels like "spirits within" when I play.  Thats just my thoughts.

Though I say it's a chore and I dislike jrpgs now days, I will still give the Final Fantasy franchise a chance.

If our release had jp voices with subtitles, I would have bought it for 360.

As it is, not interested.

Know the feeling flux.. Tidus on FFX english has my vote for worst voice acting of all time. Dodgy Genesis video games included!

And Stereo if you don't like grinding, this is the game for you, you are not forced into lvling if you dont want to 100%, final boss can be beaten without even coming close to maxing everyone.

I havent played a JRPG properly since suikoden 2.  Just cant seem to get into them anymore.

Might give this a whirl when it drops, but Ive just started Mass Effect 2, so it might have to wait.

Used FF7 as the example as it seems to have become the most popular of the batch. I loved the shit out of it tho.

When people say resident evil 1, I think the gamecube remake, that shit was DOPE. Voiceacting was fixed too, well beyond passable anyway.

The game was released in December 2009, I beat the final boss in 2009, it scrapes in as a game of last decade ;]

And cool on the SSBM, I was really only hard out into it during 2001-2006 tho with my wavedashing pad skills and what not..
But I reckon I'd still play a pretty decent Young Link.

So far, this game either sounds like

a) A pretty decent game without much of the tedious JRPG love story kawaii nesan grinding that all the JRPG weaboos like

or

b) A game so terrible only a fanboy could love it.

I hope it's the former.

Yea don't take my word for it, give it a go. Providing english dub isn't terrishit it should live up to the hype.

Truthfully I'm very critical of console games, I wouldn't give approval lightly just because of the brand. As I said earlier, I didn't much enjoy FFX, think the only good thing to come from X-2 was some art and piano music.. and flat out disliked every aspect of 12.

Oh and to anyone interested, here's some facts I jotted down and posted on another site during my first couple days play-

Random musings as I get them-
- After each fight, you get a rating out of 5 stars and some points. I'm not sure what the points are used for, but they aint EXP points. (Figured out their use, see below)
- Quicker you get done with a fight, the better your rating. So pretty much don't heal unless you need to, and pick the correct attacks to do well.
- You don't level up through grinding in this game. Ok so just not in the traditional sense, you do sphere grid tho through battles tho.
- Most characters have either a single target attack, or a slightly weaker AOE attack which damages multiple enemies close to it.
- After each fight, your party is fully healed. Any dead characters are bought back to life.
- You can't use items outside of battle, but you don't need to since you pretty much catch a megalixer after every battle.
- Enemies in the field are free roaming, if you approach one it will chase you and if it catches you the fight begins and the game switches to combat mode. You can avoid alot of fights by dodging enemies.
- If you sneak up behind an enemy in the field, then touch it to initiate the attack before it notices you, you score a pre-emptive attack in the battle.
- You only control one member of your party at a time, the actions the other members will take are based on the roles you give them.
- There are a number of roles you can assign to each character, and you can advance your characters ability in each role by spending CP. You need to pick and choose which roles you want as abilities you learn are specific to each role, so if you spend points learning an attacker skill, then switch to a different role later on, that skill will no longer be available to you. So it becomes the players choice to either have the characters master a single role each, or spread their CP across multiple roles to have the "Jack of all trades" mentality going.
- The basic "Potion" item in this game will heal your entire party on use, instead of just one member.

The 6 Main roles and what they do-
Attacker - Focuses on Physical attacks
Blaster- Black magic and focuses on long lasting chains
Defenders- Guards against enemy attacks, can act as a tank
Healer- Heals party using white magic
Enhancer- Buffs party members
Jammer- Debuffs enemies

- If you die, you no longer have to fall back to your last save. The option to restart from just before your last battle has been added.
- Turns out the points you earn from battle are useless at the start of the game, but after a key event takes place they become CP used to advance your skills and attributes, so yea you do level up from grinding.
- Characters have 1 weapon slot, and 1 accessory slot. (Found out as you level you unlock more acc. slots)
- Switching Optimas (changing roles) mid battle often leads to a lower battle rank being given. Scratch that, it just makes for a slower fight. You can switch optima alot and be quick and still get a 5 star rank.
- Certain characters only have specific roles available to them at the start of the game, however as the game progresses I am to believe every character can have every role unlocked.
- Save points start out being used purely to save your game, but before long they also become shops you can use to buy items and accessories. I hear futher down the track they can also be used to upgrade your weapons with materials similar to in Final Fantasy 8.
- The yellow arrow icon on your minimap marks "The way" to your next objective. So if you ever come out of a battle and aren't sure which way you came from, just follow the yellow arrows direction.

- As you level up, you unlock additional accesory slots, max is 4 per char.
- You have a special bar in battle called TP, it fills very slowly (Can take 20 - 30 battles to fill the bar from empty back to lvl 5) and is used to do special abilities such as scan. As the game progresses you learn that TP is needed in order to cast summons. Initial summons drop the bar 3 out of 5 levels. I have only encountered one boss battle which was long enough for me to use a summon twice in one fight (i.e, enough time went by for the bar to go from lvl 5, down to 2, then back up to 3 again for a second cast)
- Casting a summon will revive any dead party members you have in that fight with you.
- The counter which shows total time spent played pauses when you have the game in the pause state.

- You can level up all weapons and accesories in this game. Increases stat bonus \ changes attributes.
- After a weapon achieves it's maximum current level (Most weapons cap at lvl 20 or 40) you can use a special rare item to upgrade it to a Tier 2 weapon.
- Once you have a tier 2 weapon, you can level it again.
- A maxed tier 2 weapon can be leved into your characters Best weapon, every tier 2 weapon variant will become the same tier 3 weapon for each character, but the t3 weapon will have different bonuses \ stats based on which weapon you leveled to begin with.
- So yea.. Lightning has 10 tier 1 weapons, 10 tier 2 weapons, but only 1 tier 3 weapon (Omega weapon) but the stats and abilities of her tier 3 weapon are completely different despite it having the same look based on which you lvld.

Holy shit Skullator.. you're even more of a fanboy than me haha your room looks insane, wish I could do that to my room as my GF won't let me have other girls in it!!!! hahaha

anyways FF series have always been one of my favourite jrpgs and in saying so I have as many copies of FF series as you including the odd breath of fire series, dragon quest, Suikuden, star ocean etc etc.

I would have to say FF7 is my favourite due to its first of a kind at the time and its breath taking story line. Nowdays most rpg's have great graphics but lack gameplay, story and such. I agree with you totally that no FF series since 7 and maybe 8 was any good. I will definitely give this a try along with start ocea the last hope.

This concerns me. I loved FFXII. Didn't really think much of XIII or IX, I hated whichever one of those where you had to keep drawing your magic from the enemy, I think it was the one with Squall and the gunblade. I liked X and both my fiance and I really enjoyed X-2 and XII.

I'm still fucking hyped though.

Nice collection though, I should post up a pic of our Final Fantasy couch pillows.

Good shit Andy ;]

Stereo, it's like an automated gambit system.
Your other 2 party members will always automatically do the best things available to them BASED on the role you have currently assigned to them. The optima switching part of fights is really fun.. basically lets you switch from healer back to attacker.. back to enhancer etc mid fight. Every character has 3 main roles, and the 3 additional roles they don't have only become available to level very late in the game, and require alot of grinding to max (Optional content, everyone only needs 3 roles for final boss)

Gene, we can't all like the same things. I know I'm in the minority for not liking the ps2 games, I'm sure if you enjoyed X you will love the shit out of XIII as imo it's just flat out improved in every aspect.

And yeah Samurai I like FF8 just as much as FF7, magic was just very optional in that game.. only use it to get 100 stock and junction to stats haha.. Junctioning 100 Ultima to resist = win

Beast haha

Edit: So I've given the english voice track a go and can honestly say, they have done the best they could or at least made a decent effort. The only characters voice I am obect to is Vanilles.. which is unfortunate since she narrates the game.
Lightning is well done, as emoitionless as you could expect to begin with, and Sazh the Black guy is particularly good, done by a black guy I might add which is.. good to know I spose haha.
As for Fang.. the strong Aussie accent we all know is coming futher down the line.. I'll hold my judgement till later.

It's a given but yeah.. the script writers have localized shit alot, and some of the dialogue feels very "Forced" but that happens with pretty much every translation, and it's not the voice actors fault for reading the lines they are given ultimately..
The very first line in the game is spoken very poorly though which is a shame since I found it to be a very powerful lead in to the game in Nihon "The thirteen days.. "

Needless to say, it ain't got ship on the Japanese track which is really something else, I recommend you stream some of it if at all possible as it is a work of art (Those crazy Seiyuu's and Idols have a career of just fucking with their voice and making cool shit happen with them I guess.. )
I will use this video to solidy my thoughts on why Japanese voice actors are better than English. They level up their shit in real life to achieve results like this (Oh.. My.. God at the second one!!)

I only just found out that FFXIII is out on something that isn't a playstation, so I'm pretty hype. Especially after Skullators comments.

FF7 & FF8 were the business. FF9 was balls. Played a bit of FF10 with a friend but didn't play it through myself, it was OK at best. Skipped the MMO FF (wow > * ). I played through FF7 about 3 times and two of those hit the max play time the game could record.. :( Still got FF7 and FF8 discs packed away somewhere, someone offered me $300 for them both too, but DENIED. :D

I'm not sure of the name of the item in the english version, but you can buy 31 of this item in a shop~
"Perfect jelly" or "Super Jelly" it was called in Japanese version, applying 31 of these to your weapon \ acc. of choice will trigger the triple exp multiplier every time (and 31 of the jelly item is pretty cheap)

After that you pretty much want to use as much expensive \ high exp lvling items as you can at once, it won't stay 3x multiplier for more than one go, so make it a big spend to get the most exp from your gil spent.
You can buy all the best exp items from the shops at save points (They unlock as the game progresses)
