2011 Fortnightly Ranking Battles
A new year and a whole heap of NZism events to look forward to! NZism will be continuing with the fortnightly ranbats at Giga on a Friday night in addition to other tournaments which will be announced at a later date. We plan to include games such as BlazBlue: Continuum Shift and Marvel vs Capcom 3 this year, in addition to continuing support for SSF4. It is not clear at this stage if the new games will also have double elimination brackets, like SSF4, or if we will be providing something else, like round robin, single elimination brackets or casual setups. Other games may also be supported, depending on their popularity and availability. BB:CS is likely to be run on PS3 while MVC3 will be on Xbox360.

As previously, the cost remains at $10 dollars, regardless of what games you want to play. Newcomers are given free entry for their first time to encourage people to come check out the ranbats, so if any of you regulars see someone down at the arcade or want to bring a friend along that’d be great!
Where
Ranbats will be held at Giga Internet Cafe, Level 2, 65 Wakefield Street, Auckland Central.
When
The ranbats typically run from 6pm through to 10pm and will be held on the following dates (subject to change)
28th January, 11th 25th February, 25th March, 8th 23rd April, 20th May, 3rd 17th June, 1st July, 12th 26th August, 9th September, 7th 21st October, 4th 18th November.
SSF4 Ranking Battle Format
Based on feedback from people within the community and similar events happening overseas we have decided to change the format of the ranbats to increase the competitiveness of the events and to prevent scaring off newcomers!
We will run two separate brackets with a promotion/demotion system. The top players within the community will all be put into the ‘top-tier’ bracket (16 players max) and the remaining players will be in the ‘low-tier’ bracket. Players who win the ‘low-tier’ bracket will be promoted to the ‘top-tier’ bracket and conversely, players from the ‘top-tier’ bracket that fail to win games will be demoted to the ‘low-tier’ bracket.
Initially the players will be split based on past tournament and ranking battle results. Newcomers will always be put into the ‘low-tier’ bracket. Under certain circumstances, you may not get promoted or demoted, this is completely up to the organisers.
Q&A
What do I need to bring to ranbats?
Arcade sticks are always welcome, we usually don’t have enough of these! Xbox360s aren’t usually required however if you are able to bring one along, please let me know so if we’re short for an event for whatever reason I can get in touch with you.
How do the casual setups work?
It’s fairly straight forward, find someone you’d like to have a set with (best of 3 games, best of 3 rounds), sit down and play. Once the set is over, both players get off. The ranbats is not an arcade, winner doesn’t stay on! This is so everyone gets a fair amount of games and to promote discussion between players. If you lose in the double elimination bracket, this is a great way to run it back.

How do you determine who goe sit what bracket? also for those not regular, like myself, how do we get put into the brackets? i come once every 2-3 ranbats.
It's pretty simple how we've split the brackets. I've drafted up a table with results from 2010 ranbats (both seasons) and tournaments (nationals and christmas damager) and ranked everyone based on those. The top 16 are in the top tier and everyone else is in the low tier.
However, there were some people (such as Kevin and iMagneto) that didn't make it into top tier because they don't often attend ranbats, but because they [edit]placed well[/edit] in a NZism tournament I've put them into the top tier bracket anyway. So we have about 20 people in the top tier and everyone else is in the lower tier.
Now lets say I enter a ranbats and beast everyone in the lower tier, I'll get promoted to the top tier and someone who lost both their games in the top tier will be demoted to the bottom tier. Hope that's clear?
Man marvel gonna bring heaps of newcomers i bet. LIke sf4 when console release. I mean blazblue even brought some newcomers and everyone i know never even heard of it. I can't wait for marvel mane.

We're trying to come up with some prizes for ranbats, without another new game on the horizon we can't rely on the raffle idea like last season. Once we have the details it'll be posted in this thread!
Yeah the S/A tier thing should be good, people can still mix it up on the casual setups if they wanted to play someone that wasn't in their tier as well, so no one should really miss out on anything!

Basically, this will depend on numbers from week to week. Obviously, the more regulars we have, the more we can invest in BB in terms of time/setups etc.

If anyone wants to play BB:CS they just need to make sure someone brings PS3 sticks and a copy of the game in case we forget to bring one. We will definitely be happy to put on a setup for it from 7 till 10 if the demand is there (say, 4 people). As long as people bring the gear, we'll run the setup. :D

ranbats was pretty rad last night. liked my games vs andys akuma best, since they were prob my own games of the night where i sat down and focused.
kungs singing the transformers theme did not help my other game, even if it was super awesome :D

It was a cool night. Its been a while since Ive come out of hiding and looks like my lab practice is finally starting to show :) Cool idea with the brackets, now I can always brag about winning a sf tourney at least once in my life. Only way it would ever happen, lol.
Great games Dave, the room sure seemed to get a lot hotter for our finals, or maybee I was just nervous as hell :-[ Those matches were uber close and you really seemed to adapt from our earlier battle, could have gone either way. DJ Reminise has a massive amount of connections. If I even knew half as many people as him we would be pulling significantly higher numbers.
We are focussing heavily on promotions this year anyway.
And some of you guys need to give us some credit. We don't look at things like that like "OH LULZ LOOK AT THAT OH WELL NVM". We actually DO take notice of things like this. I've already put the idea out to support the HF community if it really is this big. I will also be having a good conversation with Blade on the 16th about spreading the HF love.
Yes. There are a lot of things different. The potential $2000 pot is one of them. But the bar they're using obviously isn't charging them to hire it out, presumably because DJ Reminise has connections with them, since he plays there quite a lot. As such, they can afford a pot like this. They already own the setups they are using, and the Bar's TV's and sound system will be used.
Currently the stuff that will be provided at this tourney is costing us quite a lot. And not only that, since our tournaments are a lot more regular, we try to charge you guys less so that things across the year are more affordable.
Furthermore, its winner take all. We generally split our pots for the top 3. This is a move i stand by as well. I prefer the idea of having more prizes, but i definitely see having one amazing prize like that as something worth considering and i have suggested it on numerous occasions before, but its just not something we can afford to do, unless we start charging a hell of a lot more.
I get your concerns, but we have been through all of our options in terms of running our events, and what we are doing now, based on the size of the community is best for us at the moment. When the site gets 4000 members, you might start seeing a couple of hundred people at events. We might even start charging more so that we can have sick cash prizes. But its a little way down the NZism road yet.
And can we end this conversation here please. PM me anymore you want to discuss. I want to keep the ranbats thread tidy from this point. I derail a lot of threads myself, but in threads like this, it needs to stop.

That's why we are doing prepayment for First Blood 2011 though, so we can write the brackets before the tournament starts which means we don't waste time paying for venue and setups while writing brackets up, we can just rock up at 11:30 and start playing. Also so we can gauge how many people are coming so we don't write up a 16 man bracket then have to swap to a 32 man bracket to accomodate 5 extra people (happened for BB:CS at Xmas damager).
MVC3 will be at the next ranbats, how we're going to run it is still under discussion. Info to come.

Weazzy the Sent combos I was dropping were mostly anti air S combos which timing is usually very strict or impossible. I did drop some normal ones under level 3 xf as well but that's cause I was going for too many hits and since he's heaps faster you gotta adjust.
Also I don't think I used him outside of DHCs and assists the whole tournament except against Lenny and maybe Ben lol.

Exactly. The only way you're going to have a tourney with absolutely no byes is if you have a tourney with exactly only 2,4,8,16,32,64,128 etc.. players. You guys had 19 which means you guys had no choice but to use a 32 man bracket with 13 players having byes (and 6 players being unlucky lol).
EDIT: Alternatively you could do pools where everyone plays each other for points but that would take waaaay to long ;D

Not that I care, but helping out bill on ranbats got me interested in this bracket running stuff, willing to help out when you guys get swamped trying to monitor results of each setup, making sure each setup is ready to go etc.
Maybe I can even help get players ready just before a setup is finished so they can just jump on straight away. Streamline that shit!

How/if we seed MVC3 has yet to be decided. First Blood 2011 is going to be quite different to our previous tournaments, much more organised (hence why we wanted as many people as possible to prepay). We'll have 8 setups going at once, so we'll need a few people making sure rules are adhered to and the setups are always being used.
BTW guys, I've posted MVC3 results up and we'll be keeping track of points.

We're gonna keep running things as they are for the time being though. We've all got a fair bit of shit on our plates atm. I might have a chat to Alan at timezone to see what the deal with something like this would be for them logistically next time im down there.
There are a lot of factors which would potentially make something like that not work as well for timezone, and I really dont want timezone to be out of pocket or anything. (Since they treat us pretty awesome down there)
Im gonna keep this idea in the tank for the future. I think there are some issues that need to be smoothed over before we can do anything with it though.

Its not that simple.
Look, this is not going to happen any time soon. Its as simple as that. We like the idea, but implimenting it takes a lot more work than just telling timezone were gonna roll up on a Friday so they need to turn the machines on free play.
We need to work out what there average revenue is on a Friday night if thats when we want to do it. We want to discuss whether or not a different day would suit them. Their local management needs permission from general management before anything can go ahead. If we have a night with a bad turnout then timezone end up making a loss, which would discourage them from doing anything with us in the future. We need to figure out an appropriate price. It just requires a lot more resources on our part than it appears. These are ALL things that need to be discussed and confirmed before we can even THINK about doing something at Timezone.
You KNOW I like the idea, but we can't do it right now. Thats just how it is. Come back in a few months and it might be a lot more realistic. For now though, its a great idea that we will be looking into. Just don't expect anything to happen with it in the next few months AT LEAST.

There was mixed reviews honestly. A few of the guys were keen for some bracket action, but there were just as many if not more that preferred the casuals.
We're taking all this shit into consideration. Ranbats is gonna be getting a decent overhaul over the next few months. Gonna be some trial and error though, so people need to turn up and hit us with some feedback.

So I just want to make some clarifications in this thread.
The idea to move our fortnightly session to Saturday is due to a couple of things. Firstly the sad turnout we have been getting on Friday nights, and secondly due to a different rate we get for hiring monitors on Saturday afternoon.
Also to clarify, the Saturday sessions at this point will be "Grind Sessions", ie they will not be a tournament. Basically a bunch of casual games where you get to play each other for the time that we have rented the monitors. There will be some structure around it on the day so that everyone get's to play, and there are no console hogs, and also an opportunity for you to challenge particular people for certain matchups. The focus will be much more on helping each other out , as opposed to an out and out tournament.
The idea is that we run this for one season, and then return to the Friday Night Ranbats as they have run previously in the later part of the year. So in a way you could consider the Saturday Grind Sessions as great time to prep up ready for the Ranbats later in the year.
Of course none of this is set in stone. If we find that this isn't working, we can always change it around again.
Since this won't be a "Ranbats" anymore, I will make a new thread and unsticky this one. We can move the discussion there.
