Title: Its about time to buy a console.
Post by: jpb123 on September 23, 2010, 01:23:12 AM
So am been thinking about buying one for some time ( about a year :x )
I think am going to get a Xbox 360 "Pro" the 20GB one.
The only game I will be playing is SSF4 but I guess also MvC3 and SFvsT.

Am 90% sure am going to buy one but So got acouple of questions about 360s.

I understand you need to be a gold member to play online. How do pay for this?
The screen I got is a PC screen but it has a HDMI cable will that work?

quick question about ssf4( on xbox )
How active is it? do you find games quickly with a good 4+ bars?
there alot of people and differnet skills level playing?

I say this because on SF4 PC now am just playing about  the 5/6 same people and that not as much fun anymore.

And be my friend on xbox please :((((((((((

Get an xbox live subscription card. Seriously, don't subscribe with credit card, they don't give you the option to turn off recurring fees via web anymore; you either have to call them (which they are cunts about) or top up via those card things to stop it recurring. Your monitor will work if it has HDMI input, can't say whether the monitor itself will be optimal for lag and shit but fuck who cares you're playing online.

As for finding games, if you set your flag to Australia you'll find heaps of randoms in endless and ranked with a reasonable connection no problem.

This is crap. Shortly before the payment recurs, if youre on Xbox live, it asks you whether or not you want to renew your gold subscription or not. And it wont recur automatically either. It needs your permission.

Uh, not in my experience. Every three months I get a "HEY YOU'VE SUCCESSFULLY BEEN RESUBSCRIBED!" and I yell "FUCK I DON'T USE THIS SHIT ANYMORE LET ME OUT!"

I got a live card from eb games which had it on the shelf for $90. Asked them if they would price match it with JB for $70 (i had no proof and actually
walked down to eb from JB cause JB had none left) and the guy said "sure". Done. Lol. Think it's $80 with credit card online?

Yeah that's what happened to me when i was buying a game. I made up that it was way cheaper at the wharehouse and they excepted it without even ringing them lol.

Lol I've been the same. I've always just done all my gaming on my beasty computer, and never really got round to getting a console. I was thinking of getting a PS3 late October/early Novemberish if I can wait till after uni exams, or just now if I can find a good deal.

Actually, where would you guys suggest buying a PS3?

Mighty ape has 160gb ones for $610, the Warehouse just got them in for $588 as an introductory offer since they just got them or w/e. EB and JB prob have them for shit ass prices so I didn't bother looking.

I kinda like the $588 Warehouse option. Unless you guys know where I can get one for a better price I'd prob end up going with that.

Lol I do most of my gaming/media consumption on my PC.

The only reason I'm getting a PS3 is to play the games I can't already play on my PC. Like besides save games, I can't really see what else I would put onto the PS3 to take up space.

Also, the only reason why I'd get a 360 would be for Reach, but I already got my fightstick for PS3/PC and my friends who play Blazblue with me all have PS3s.

ALSO I'll be damned if I gotta pay to play online.

Well that's perspective really Alan. Suzannah and I own an PS3 each haha, I'll try and give my perspective as a PS3 gamer thats going to buy an Xbox360 after Xmas. Until I started to know people from NZism I'd never met that many people that played on an Xbox haha.
I'm getting my Xbox360 to play all the NZism dicks at fighting games, but for me there is not a lot of life left in SSF4 so I'm going to wait until MvC3 conmes out to buy my one. In all honestly it will prob just be a cheap online fighting game platform for me.
ALL my non-fighting game playing friends own a PS3 so there are heaps of people to play online with, never had trouble finding randoms to play RDR with. When GT5 comes out I'm gonna have to make more space on my friends list to add people to play that! I'm thinking of starting a second PSN account just for GT5 friends haha.
Honestly I don't like the Xbox exclusives, couldn't give a crap about Halo and don't really play FPS games at all...and obviously GT5 > Forza ;) For me PS3 rules exclusives for my tastes ie. Little Big Planet, GT5, Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3 and soon Disgaea 4, God Of War, Uncharted, Infamous etc
PS3 has the advantage of region free so I can import games like Blazblue etc, which I'm sure interests originaljulz as a Blazblue player. I see people playing Blazblue all the time, no can do on an Xbox at the moment.
Each has their own advantages and disadvantages I'm def not trying to run down the Xbox, I mean I am going to buy one but at the end of the day I'm a PS3 person, if it wasn't for all the good cunts on NZism that play on Xbox there would be know reason for me to get one.

Oh yeah and paying to play online has always put me off, fuck that noise.

Exactly how I feel.

Technically (and spec wise) the PS3 comes out on top, but, if you're somewhat serious about playing fighting games in NZ, XBox is where you're going to find the most competition.

Wow what legit response. Yeh, I always used to be more of an Xbox over PS man, till I got a $3000 scholarship at the end of highschool and then bought a computer with it xD

Like I said, the PC is my main gaming platform, so to me, the PS3 is like what buying the 360 is to you. i.e. to play the games I can't already on PC, and to verse friends at the games on that console. The whole region free thing is also a pretty big factor, since a lot of the games I wanna play would need to be imported.

Everyone from NZism playing MvC3 and fighting games in general on the 360 over PS3 kinda makes me sad in the pants though.

But back to my original question... Any suggestions where I should buy one from?

And sorry to jpb123, I pretty much just jacked your thread. (Didn't wanna start a new one though :/)

edit: geneterror, would you say a 160gb console would be big enough, considering the PS3 would only be for the games I couldn't play on PC? What's the capacity on your PS3?
Title: Re: Its about time to buy a console.
Post by: Skullator on September 23, 2010, 04:56:55 PM
From my experience, if you have a nice computer, your PS3 HDD will be pretty much empty besides game installs, downloads and save games =\
I got a 60GB and a 250Gb only because it was a special limited edition one, never came remotely close to having storage issues with either tho.

Note: Your PS3 can read your movies \ music \ pictures from your PC directly over your network, pretty much eliminating the need to stash stuff on it.
Java media server is a great tool to use with a PS3, lets your PS3 transcode .mkv files, and all your other formats, and even lets you play softsubs (like .SRT for example) with your movies, ballin.

lol, I was pretty much just trolling.

But since this is a fighting game site, I assume ppl want to play fighting games, and I do strongly believe 360 is the better platform in that regard.
Title: Re: Its about time to buy a console.
Post by: [NIUE] weazzyefff on September 23, 2010, 05:33:59 PM
Yeah Graeme and Electric pretty much said it.

I wanted to get an XBOX for that EXACT same reason. But after i thought about it, i was like 'nah that's way too much just to play SSF4 with NZism guys'. Then gotta fork out another $120 or so to dual mod my stick, which i think makes it laggy on the modded platform.

Plus PSN not that bad, i mean look at the dudes that came 1st and 2nd at Nats, they don't even have a console.

Then i decided i was gonna get a Wii ( with my $0 lol ). But the PS move is coming out which everyone reckons will own the wii. So fuck, more money for bourbinos and beewahs. I'm pretty sure i make excuses up subconsciously for those last ones though.

i should add, if you're a prolific gamer who also likes to have a nice collection,  as well as DLC content, PSN games and the awesome trend of gigantic installs for games. if you dont give a rats ass and trade in like no tomorrow then yeah, no need for an HDD that big.

cunts, just let us stream that shit off the disc like uncharted 2.

only thing that fucks me off about xbox compared to ps3 is I can't play imported games. Other than that, it's pretty sweet really.

If any console let me play an FPS with a keyboard and mouse instead of a pad then i'd buy it instantly. It'd open up the RTS genre to consoles as well, and mmo's. lol

To connect my friends PS3 to my pc screen, I used a HDMI to DVI cable. There is a device so that I can plug both my computer and the PS3 into it, and flick a switch to change between the two for my one screen, right?

I'm sure I've seen one/read about one before... Or maybe I just dreamt it up, and thought 'oh that was a good idea.'

Yes we use one at work, we have four computers hooked up to one screen and we just select which computer displays using a switcher. Dunno how much though but I'll try and get the name and/or model at work today if you're interested.

I loved my PS3, it looks good and have teh majority of the function I required. The only reason I ported to xbox was because I am a competitive player in SSF4, in order to get the most out of that game I had to get the best setup and the setup that WE used at tournaments. PS3 was too much of a  pain due to the graphic upscaling and input lag crap which I couldn't be bothered with!!!
Apart from that I still prefer the PS3 tbh.

PS3 forever! :)
Though I make major use of the Bluray player & play BB

I'm gonna get a 2nd so I can get the move (for my daughter).
My main unit is hooked up to a projector - the move won't work to well when the controller is backlit.

I'll also add Uncharted2 is probably the best non fighting game ive played on either system.

I'm probably stating the obvious here but just in case you aren't aware- you won't be able to convert a PS2/3/PC stick to work on Xbox without a pretty expensive converter/dual mod/paewang... you might want to account for this in your spending budget.

It seems everyone else interpreted that question different to me.  :-\

Ah I see, I see. Do you (or geneterror) have any idea what kind I should get and where from? I wouldn't even know where to start. Prob doesn't need to be hard out, just something that will let me switch between a PS3 and my PC on the fly. And its just for the HDMI to DVI cable, I run the sound through another cable lol.

You just want an HDMI switch then.

Or you could run one of them through VGA if your monitor has both slots and you don't mind the slight quality drop. Then it's just a press of a button on your monitor.

I duno if an HDMI switch is what I need.

This is what I use to plug the PS3 into my screen
(http://avedia.com.au/shop/images/hdmi-dvi.jpg)

And I use the same port (DVI or w/e) to connect my PC to my screen

I think ideally I need something like this (I think this is the HDMI switch you guys mentioned)

Cept you know, with DVI ins/out ports instead of HDMI.

This exists yes/no?

Post by: massi4h on September 25, 2010, 09:47:42 PM
Your video card on your PC doesn't have HDMI? Or else you could just get another of those HDMI/DVI plugs and an HDMI cable. So plug the HDMI/DVI cable from the computer to the HDMI In of the switcher, then HDMI cable from console to the other HDMI In and then have your other HDMI/DVI cable coming from the HDMI out into your monitor's DVI port. Thing is, those switchers cost like what $100? Pretty sure you can get DVI switchers (I've definitely seen VGA ones somewhere). But you'd save a hell of a lot of money by either doing your current switching method or plugging either your PC or console into the VGA on your monitor (assuming your monitor has both a VGA and DVI port), drop of quality is barely noticeable imo.

Hmm I suppose PC in -> HDMI switch with a HDMI to DVI cable,
PS3 in -> HDMI switch with HDMI to HDMI cable,
HDMI switch in -> PC screen with second HDMI to DVI cable sounds like what I was trying to do.

Or if something like this existed lol, cept with DVI.

Then I could use my existing DVI to DVI cable (PC to screen) and HDMI to DVI cable (PS3 to screen).

I need a HDMI cable to plug into my screen to my Xbox correct?

OK So the only cable coming from my xbox ( apart from controllers and internet cable) are the power cable and my HDMI cable correct?

DO 360 come with a HDMI cable?

unless you want your old memory card to work?

Really? But they don't play Ps2 right? I'll give it a try though.

For anyone else following this. I just read on another board that Pal Ps3 can not play NTSC Ps1. Saved me some moneys right there.

i think the first lot of 60gb's played ps2 games but then sony realised that the ps2 was still selling so they took it out.

sucks that the ps3 doesnt play other region psx games tho'

I have one of the original PAL 60GB PS3's, and yeah only PS3 games are region free on them.
PSX = region locked, pal only if you buy NZ ps3.
PS2 = region locked, again pal only if you have PAL ps3.
DVD = also still region locked lol, Zone4 or Multi zone legit releases only, can just burn your own shit though to work around that tho.

And yeah like Graham already mentioned, can vouch that it depends on the chip but majority seem to cope.

Cool. Now that it seems Amazon UK can't ship some games to NZ might have to risk the US veriosn on Ps2.

Thanks for info guys.
