Title: Street Fighter IV TE stick...
Post by: fluxcore on December 23, 2008, 09:48:32 AM
http://www.lizardlick.com/pages/madcatz.shtml

With shipping and exchange rate, comes to almost exactly $400.

I'm mad, but not quite mad enough to pay that much for a stick... unfortunately. Would love to get my hands on one.

There is a rumour that the TE stick will get a limited release in Australia - so maybe, just maybe it could work out a little cheaper.  I have a friend who lives 10 min from his local gametraders who could hook us up with some sticks maybe (he is coming over to NZ in February...) so we may be able to sort something out... worth a thought, anyhow

Yep, definitely worth checking out - however, in my experience, local releases of electronics tend to be 3x as much as the US price, which would put it at more like $450. We live and hope...

Mightyape might still pull through, as well.

I'm guessing the standard sticks are going to be much more obtainable than the TE ones though (i.e. at all)

Yeah, the standard ones are _very_ similar to the TE version by all accounts - different artwork and 'arcade grade' parts as opposed to sanwa...

I would not spend 400 of my dollars on something made by madcatz.

However, I really need to get round to finish modding my 20th anniversary stick, haha.  :-\

I know what you mean, but the TE sticks are getting amazing feedback from everyone, including top players like Alex Valle. Can't exactly go too wrong with Sanwa sticks and buttons, either.

That is a pretty amazing arcade stick :o. I'd definitely be interested in one of these if the price is right  ;)

Check dis out then
http://www.shoryuken.com/?p=568

the unboxing.

Apparently the stick has a bunch of awesome little features which make it better than everything else on the market, not that they are telling us what they are.

I'm actually really unimpressed with the press coverage/general info available for these sticks, considering the source on SRK who is directly involved with the sticks pretty much only says "PRE ORDER NOW, I CAN'T STRESS THAT ENOUGH" and goes on about how limited they are and whatnot. No mention whatsoever about european/au release, or the features, etc...

I wouldn't care, but I really want one of those sticks :/

Our friends at Play Asia have got a listing for a Hori SFIV stick.  From the Pic it looks almost identical to all their other 360/ps3 sticks such as the DOA 4 and SC4 ones, although it obvioiusly has SFIV art.  Scant details on the site about it though.

From what I understand, the Madcatz 'shitty' SFIV stick is supposed to be better than the equivalent Hori one, although not entirely sure how.

I believe the differences have to do with these 'mystical' features that MadCatz keep talking about, but nobody seems to know what they are.  Personally I fail to see what 'features' a stick can have, other than good layout and components.  Turbo/auto fire are for wusses!

Ok, news, none of it good:

Hi,

Congratulations on a fantastic line of Street Fighter merchandise!
There's only one problem: How does one get ahold of it in Australasia?
I'm in New Zealand, and none of the usual stores down here know ANYTHING
about the range at all. I'm a huge street fighter fan and would
seriously love to get my hands on a TE stick/console faceplate/wall
scroll, but it seems your sales are only targeting America and the UK,
which means IMMENSE shipping costs, even if a store will send the items
internationally (surprisingly uncommon!)

I know your products have been sold down here before, so I'd be ecstatic
to hear that these will be as well! Is there any intention of doing so?

Thank you very much,
--Alan

Hello Alan,
Unfortunately, we do not have plans to sell the SFIV products at your
location.  One place that you can purchase the stick from is
http://lizardlick.com .  They also have a convenient shipping calculator
so you can see the final cost.  If something changes and we end up
selling the SFIV products at your location, I will let you know.  If you
have any further questions, please let me know.  Thank you for your
time!

So basically, no sticks or anything locally here. Get ready to import.

You can import a HRAP1 from Japan along with parts of your choice and it wouldn't ome close to $400.

This was on Kotaku tonight

it gives a bit of a rundown on the stick, some nice pics etc.  Sounds sexy, but too damned expensive for my tastes.

Strangely, I just received ANOTHER response to this email, this time saying:

Quote
Hi Alan,

Thank you for your email.

We are in discussion at the moment with Mad Catz regarding launching
these products locally.

I'd say the shipping would be very expensive and would be stopping
stores from shipping outside their country origins.

Regards,

Raja Henley
Group Product Manager

Not sure exactly whether that is more hopeful or not, but at least discussion is still occurring.

You guys are right though, the TE sticks are a bit OTT in price in the current economic climate. One of the normal fightsticks would do me pretty well though I reckon, and if the pads are common ground, one or two of them for hacking purposes would go down well too :)

There you have it, NZ release of TE stick, strictly limited, $400 (exactly what I expected).

from the email:

**IMPORTANT**

If you want one of these beasts -- you must place your order BEFORE 3PM THIS THURSDAY, February 5th. We cannot take any more orders after this time and the product will be removed from the website.

Unfortunately stock will not arrive until the end of April, so you'll have to pound those game pads in the meantime! :)

Fuck it, I'm just going to get one. Once I get home and see my credit card number that is!

Now I just need to hunt down the wallscroll and faceplates :/

It is possible, but I've only found *1* suitable 360 pad in NZ in the past year...

I still need another one so my arcade cabinet actually has 2 360 sticks! :(

There a couple of different versions of the pad, one of which apparently will work, however I've been completely unable to determine which one is the right one in NZ... not many people want to let me open up their wired controllers for some reason :/

I figure i might as well. Ive got 3 weeks in which to dick around with it until my 360 gets back. I might have to go and test my controller on Sol's since i wont have a console of my own.

Dick Smith is clearing their stock of wired controllers, so theyre going for about $50 at the moment, so i reckon ill give it a shot with one of those. It seems simple enough.

My only problem is that i will be trying to use my namco stick 'box', which means im gonna have to somehow cut a hole for the xbox 360 guide button. I don't have the patience to build a box from scratch, and ive got no idea how im going to do this.

Unfortunately i dont. I think ill just be ghetto and use the button from the controller somehow.

New question. Do i need to remove (what i will call, for all intents and purposes) the "Ps1 PCB" from the inside of the namco stick? Or can i just treat the points ive highlighted in the picture below as the connections on the buttons, and solder them to the 360 PCB?

Obviously the wire that connects the PCB to the console i would be keeping separate.

I figure if i can do this, then i should theoretically be able to use the stick for both PS2 and 360? But im pretty sure i cant, and removing the old PCB seems lke a pain in the ass.

Mike needs to hurry up and tell me how much $$ he can get the TE stick for >_>

Have a read of the threads on SRK related to dual pcb mods... I haven't done any and I'm not quite sure where you want the break point to be. I'm not sure if there could be problems supplying the ps1 pcb with current through the buttons...

Yea ill post a pic when i actually get a wired controller. I havent managed to get to dick smith or anywhere really. Although i did find a pic of one on SRK. Ill post it up when i get home. Apparently their "server is too busy" for me to do it now. If its not common ground, does that mean i will have to daisy-chain all the ground's together?

Nah, it means you CAN'T daisy chain them together, because each button has a separate ground (read: you'll need two wires going to each button from the pcb). Doesn't really matter for a single stick, but it sucks for me due to the way all my stuff is setup.

From what I understand, the new revision of the wired controller has common ground for everything but the triggers, which would suffice. I don't suppose you have a multimeter then? Because it's really annoying to work out what grounds are connected otherwise.
Title: Re: Street Fighter IV TE stick...
Post by: [NIUE] BIRRY WONG on February 25, 2009, 01:24:47 PM
But if they were common ground, then i wouldn't need to daisy chain them? Or would i? Forgive me for being totally new to this, and, shall we say, 'electronically inexperienced, but i took common ground to mean that each point has a 'ground' common with the other points, so daisy chaining wouldn't be necessary anyway.

Now youre saying that in order to BE ABLE to daisy chain something, it needs common ground, which, the way i read it, would mean the entire daisy-chaining process would be a waste of time.

This is how i read it, and im a touch confused on the matter. For the sake of reference, i read 'daisy-chaining' as linking all the grounds together by soldering a wire to connect them all.

Sorry if this post came off as being kinda rude. I assure you there was no intention of that, but would you mind clearing this up for me?

This is the only reference pic i could find of the inside of a 360 wired controller. Looks like it isn't common ground to me (guessing) but at least it tells me what is ground and what isn't.

Title: Re: Street Fighter IV TE stick...
Post by: fluxcore on February 25, 2009, 02:01:48 PM
Daisy-chaining is when you have one ground wire coming from the pcb to a single microswitch on the stick/buttons, and then loop wires from each microswitch to the next. This can only be done with a common-ground pad (since every ground is the same ground point). Therefore the number of wires from the pcb to the stick/buttons is (number of directions + number of buttons) + 1 [for the ground]. (4 directions + 6 buttons + start) + 1 [ground], for example.

If the pad is NOT common ground, you can't do that, you need to have one wire from the pcb for each separate ground connection. If every button and direction on the pad has a separate ground, that means twice as many wires (minus one) than doing the daisy-chain method, i.e. 4 directions + 6 buttons + start + 11 ground wires.
Title: Re: Street Fighter IV TE stick...
Post by: [NIUE] BIRRY WONG on February 25, 2009, 02:30:56 PM
Ah thats (mostly) what i thought it was, but i know where i got confused now.

Luckily for me, since there is a PS1 PCB already in the stick, it means i only have to worry about one set of wires, Which in this case is 11 buttons + 4 directions + 15 grounds on the 360 PCB.

Given that the Namco stick is a button short, i might just omit connecting the "back" button on the 360 controller, since i dont use it at all.

If i link all the ground 'microswitches' (tell me if im using the term wrong on the PCB together, in a similar fashion to connecting the microswitches on the BUTTONS with the daisy chain method (essentially creating a 'common ground' on the PCB) could i then join the two with a single ground wire, plus the 14-15 wires from the buttons? (plus a wire connecting the 5v with the 3.3(?)v on the two PCB's, because im told dual modding wont work otherwise)

Im just trying to forward-think of ways to reduce clutter of wires in there. I just figure it would be easier to keep the two PCB's as separate as i possibly can.
Title: Re: Street Fighter IV TE stick...

If it's not a common-ground pcb, you can't just link the separate grounds together to make a single common ground, no. There is some trickery I think you can do with opto-isolators or something, but I've never actually tried it.

If the 360 controller is not common ground but the namco pcb is, then you don't want to have both them hooked up together, because it'll create the same scenario as above.

There are good reasons why a common-ground pcb is much preferred for hacking purposes! Also why I'm annoyed that I haven't been able to find them :/ Might just pony up the $80-odd to get one I know is common ground from the states... :(

BTW the microswitch is the little button the sticks/buttons press that connect the circuit - there's actually a little 'switch' in there. The bits on the pcb that the buttons press onto would be called 'pads'.

Dick Smith is clearing their stock of wired controllers, so theyre going for about $50 at the moment, so i reckon ill give it a shot with one of those. It seems simple enough.

According to the DSE website ( http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/49a5abef02705736273fc0a87f3b06f3/Product/View/YG1102 )

Sylvia Park PowerHouse, Manukau PowerHouse, Palmerston North PowerHouse.
have stock of these wired controllers. Anyone willing to pick one up for me and send it out? Obviously I'll pay for it.

My arcade cabinet is desperate for a second pcb!

Hey team. I asked mightyape about a possible delay with their stock of these, and also about whether they would be able to fill all their orders, and this is what i got in reply.

Hi William,

I haven't heard anything at all about a delay yet William - we have been on a very strict stock allocation for both the 360 and PS3 sticks. If I hear anything from the NZ supplier I will definitely update all our customers who have ordered these. Hopefully that won't be necessary!

I managed to snap one of these bad boys up from MightyApe for $397 -- definitely a lovely piece of stick, but whether it's 4 big ones worth, is up to the buyer to decide -- I think it was worth every cent.

I've heard they don't work very well on PC's with certain chipsets (from memory, it was certain nForce and VIA chipsets... there was a thread on SRK about it but I can't find it :( ) Besides those small cases, they work as described on XP and Vista with no problems -- have yet to try my PS3 stick on my iMac yet, but I doubt it'll have any issues, as the chipset is an Intel jobbie

Currently trying to change the art on it -- will look dope as hell with that dirty big french emo glaring at you every time you sit down to play ahahah

It should work, but the Madcatz sticks have troubles with some random motherboards. An Nvidia model I think? Not too sure, there are threads on SRK about it.

Yeah, xbox one works fine, ps3 one may or may not work out of the box, but apparently will work fine if you use a usb hub.

My 360 TE works with xp sp3. I have the xbcd360 drivers installed, not sure whether that makes a difference or not...

My reply from Mighty Ape

Thanks for placing your order with Mighty Ape!

Unfortunately we have just been advised by our supplier that there has been another delay on the Street Fighter IV Tournament Fightsticks :(

The lastest update was that their whole shipment was accidently sent to the wrong country! (...seriously!)  They have informed us that they are now due to arrive in NEW ZEALAND by 19th of August.

We do sincerely apologise for the delay and for any inconvenience this has caused.  We will be sure to ship these out to you as soon as they arrive in our warehouse :)

IMO weazzey.  Get this one instead:

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-zl-49-en-70-2xsu.html

Cost you less, and they are just as good for playing on.  The only reason I would go for a TE over this is soley because they are easier to mod.  So if you dont care about modding too much... Just go the HRAP3.

Then spend 30 bucks and get six sanwa buttons and come see me and I'll throw them in for you.

Honestly, I think an HRAP is better than a TE for all the reasons that Leo said and I find them a little heavier which is good. I'm sure you don't really give a shit about modding, so save yourself the extra $100 or so dollars and get an HRAP. You could use the left over money to get BB and Mahvell!

Is the white HRAP on playasia the one with Sanwa parts?

Yeah get the HRAP and get Blazblue and Marvel lol!

Fair enough though.  Do what you gotta do.

Get in touch with Firstgames.co.nz if you are having trouble finding a TE.  THey might be able to source you one.

Post by: maelgrim on August 17, 2009, 04:28:44 PM
after trying a TE at Lenny's I have to agree the HRAP3 just feels nicer IMO.
I was all set to get a TE as a 2nd stick luckily Toomeke talked me out of it before I had tried one.

TE is a great stick but I find HRAP3 a smidge better.
If you do want to get a TE - I think direct from Capcom looks like the best option (certainly popular round here).

Also the TE has problems with some USB controllers on the PC - which you can overcome by sticking in a new USB card. No problems with HRAP that I am aware of.

TBH on sunday when I was playing on Toomeke's HRAP I actually liked my TE stick more, not sure what that was about. I like the box on the HRAP more I think...

Aye? people saying HRAP is better than TE now, true? but it looks so ugz though. I got time to think about it anyway, my debit card wont be ready till 5-10 working days, I can get blazeblue and marvel anyways. Gonna start thrashing those games, sick of SF4 (not because of tourny dissapointment, just coz all the chars have been learnt)

Bro I cant wait to see you on a stick... its gonna be loltimes!!! hahha.  Nah but for reals bro Itll up your games once youre used to it.

IMO I like my TE more than my HRAP, but I think thats cause my TE has Seimitsu buttons which i favour.  Aesthetically I like the TE more, but to play on I like both.

Man I really really really want to get some BB games in. Am thinking of organising a mini tourney for it.

I'll be in for that, i'll get trashed (only managed about 30 mins playtime last week or so) but will be good fun.
I hope some SBO BB footage turns up soon - love to see how all those Nu's got taken out.

I think the TE I played on was unmodded.
I need a Seimitsu balltop to match my HRAP artmod thats coming - so if anyone is ordering parts let me know.

I like my Te more than the HRAP , I dont like the start and select buttons over the top of the main buttons cos a masher like me could easily hit them and forfeit the round like at the tourney .

The TEs are at the back so no chance but get what you want dude , anything will be better than pad , you will get used to it quick :)

You would have to go custom as most seem to have 95mm between Stick & center of left most buttons.

Gonna have to agree with this. Mighty Ape has been dicking everyone around ever since the first shipment of these bad boys sold out. I guess the good thing with ordering from Capcom now is even though theres only an $80 shipping option, it's BOUND to be faster than waiting for the first week of September. My mate bought his SE from there and it arrived in 3 weeks after payment cleared on the CHEAPEST shipping option. I'm guessing one week tops for $80 UPS International shipping

It took me a week to get fully comfortable with it on both sides -- make sure when you're doing dragon punch motions, that instead of doing "little circles in the corner", you do a Z motion from neutral -- it helps a lot

forward, down, down-forward... It's a Z!!

Cool thanks,  i was doing little circles too lol. Its hard to keep doing fireballs and shit in practice mode, it's tedious and really boring so probably take me longer than a week as i'm having breaks every 5 mins.

I don't understand the Wine Glass... how could that POSSIBLY be efficient ? I've tried it a couple times and my muscles just don't agree with the physics of it lol. DP FADC Ultra seems damn near impossible with that grip :/

Atleast all my charge characters especially Honda are way better on stick.Just got back up to scratch with Gen, took me ages, have to learn viper again, fucking bullshit had to learn every fuking char again.

Easier with stick:hundred hands/legs and electricity .

Harder with stick: df df Ultras after combo's on 1plr side and dashing across full screen to punish.

THE TRUTH, dont fuck with it.

I would've been up to scratch a while ago if i just used two chars. Anyway you'll be happy about the next thing i'm about to say, Ryu is definately NOT the easiest char to learn, he's taking the longest to get back up there and Sagat, yea i know i'm surprised as. There links are harder to learn then say Blanka's , Hond , Boxers and shitloads of others.

And zosla you'ld be pissed off too if you had start learning all the chars all over again, oh no you wouldn't you just play Ryu.

How long have you been using a stick now weezy ? I found that when I was relearning, I'd just jump into training mode for about an hour or so at a time, maybe 3 - 4 times a day until I had it locked since I had the spare when I was unemployed -- it only took about a week before I was fully comfortable with being able to execute everything at 95% again (dragon punch, fireball, ultra, armored ultra/super, flash kicks, sonic booms) -- you probably just need a little more concentrated time at things -- if you're having trouble with links, try learn plinking -- I'm about 90% consistent with my one frame links now, so just keep at it and you'll be right

Well it's not just my Abel that I found easy to get my execution back up -- although I'm fucking terrible with him, my Akuma execution is right up there too -- dp FADC shakudan combo's were a piece of cake, demon flip mixups are also really easy to execute as well. I also play a little Ryu, and my execution seems ok with him -- maybe you just need to adjust your technique a little now that you're on a stick ? What I do for DP FADC Ultra...

F, D, DF + P, DF + MP + MK (tap), Neutral, F, Ultra

Just some freaky ass buffering that I'd never be able to do on a pad, but works a treat on a stick
Title: Re: Street Fighter IV TE stick...
Post by: [NIUE] weazzyefff on September 17, 2009, 05:20:32 PM
True i'll give it a try, yeah i can do akuma's one too, and Sagats one and Abels, it because Ryu's one on 1pl side when i DP cancel after the dash i cant do df df motion quick enough, its too awkward, but heaps of time after Sagats hk and Abels cr hp, and well akumas one is tottaly different motion, and same as Ken , i can do his because of his DP hits a few times and it gives me more time. Its just that stupid fucking Ryu one on 1pl side pisses me off so bad i quit after failing it like 20 times. I know have to practice but it's boring, it was allright the first time because your learning something new but second time around.....it sux balls.
Title: Re: Street Fighter IV TE stick...
Post by: [NIUE] BIRRY WONG on September 17, 2009, 05:23:45 PM
I personally FADC in a really strange way, but it works pretty well (for me).

eg. Same combo: dp+p, F + FA, F + FA, Ultra.

I find it easier to hit the FA twice as im inputting the dash, since i am the LEAST ambidextrous person in the world. The second FA input doesnt actually DO anything, it just feels easier for me to do it that way. Plus, it means the FADC becomes 2 simple inputs, as opposed to the standard 3 (FA, f, f), similar to what electric was posting.

Its almost the same principle as plinking Akuma's demon.

the other interesting way of doing it is something along the following:

dp + p, dp + FA, ultra.

if you do the dp + FA right it should auto-dash.

This trick is actually supposed to be for Viper's free focus dash cancel glitch, where you do something like
j.hk, hp, ex seismo, (wait), dp ending in up + FA, ultra
Because you end the dp motion in up, it counts as a superjump cancel and gives you a focus dash with no ex usage. There are other ways of performing it but this is by far the easiest.
Title: Re: Street Fighter IV TE stick...
Post by: [NIUE] weazzyefff on September 17, 2009, 07:01:42 PM
Whoaaaa i never knew you could do it that way, but after that you can just straight ultra anyway, dont need to cancel and shit unless your a mile away. Talking bout viper. I tried that df dashing one electric was saying but he just ducks and doesn't dash, maybe i read it wrong.

the DF dash thing is pretty easy to do... to simulate it...

hold DF, then tap focus, go to neutral, then tap forward -- once you get that sussed, you can just tack it on to the end of your dragon punch

Oh yeah ok, i thought thats what i was doing, i had the input on and everything. I started to get it sussed anyway by practicing longer then 10 mins in practice , I just need to get it back to automatic mode, tune it in to my muscle memory.

Nah your ways fucked up bro, you gotta do the middle really quick and thats the motion i 'm having trouble with.

Yeah i got the input on, everythings good but the ultra is all these retarded directions, because after the dash i cant df,df properly, probably due to me freaking out. I can just stand there and ultra all day doing it slowly, but after the FADC i try too hard to get it to come out before they fall and the motions are a phat fail. Some times i get it 5 times in a row then i just lose it completely and start going backwards lol. Need to start practicing 5 hours a day AGAIN.

It's a thousand times harder switching from pad, the button layout alone was confusing, DP with hk, not finding throw quick enought to tech etc, and there's the joystick motions :(

Dont mean to sound like a dick here,  but it just doesn't seem so hard getting used to something, thats just a different thing stuck on the top of your stick when your a natural stick warrior.

I never realised you'd NEVER used a joystick before. I feel your pain...

For me, the button layout was never an issue, as I always played on 6 button pads (I miss you, Mega Drive...) But I did have a hard time adjusting to a stick... I know what you mean about Ryu's FADC ultra being inconsistent... I think I tend to poke it when I panic... I think the key is to just do it slowly

If your only problem is the ultra motion after the focus dash then I guess you just need to work out how to do that bit better. Either try altering your hand position (sometimes shifting the grip a bit for certain moves helps), or possibly break it down to the simplest bit possible (just practice focus dash ultra over and over until it's in muscle memory), because then it's much easier to do it along with the rest of the combo.

I know weazzy's problem as I had the same issue and took me a while to work out what actually went wrong, as you play you will understand more while executing the same move over and over. I took well over 3 months to learn this in the arcade as I did not have it on console. And even after I got my PC version in July I spent a good time in training mode to work out what actually I am doing wrong and to be honest its really up to yourself to understand you weakness in execution and find an alternative.

I taugh my cousin how to fadc into ultra and he learnt in in a day -.-
thanks to my superior teaching of course!!!! :)

$350 for a PS3 OR 360 stick. If you order through MightyApe, you can get them to match the price and they will also ship for free. Sounds like good deals if you ask me

Dude, do a Smoof and remind her how lucky she is you LET her go out with you. After you tell her that she'll probably make you dinner too.

Dudes I was reading through this forum and saw this price and said oh dam wish they had the same price for PS3. Checked it and they did - my wife noticed that I was getting very excited and after several months of hinting and hinting she utterred the magic words "ok you can buy it" suddenly the heavens opened up from the clouds above and a blinding light of street fighter sunshine pierced through the dark south auckland sky. A frantic 2 hundred and 40 second search for the credit card ensued, the details were entered, transation complete, email confirmation received - bring on the long weekend! CoffinDrop1 is a happy man!
