So, who's up for paying $75 to lose to me at DOA!?
...Yeah, I didn't think so.
Well, Xlan's in July, $75 entry. Yes it's a PC gaming event, which mean retarded stuff like Counter Strike, but since DOA4 was announced as a WCG Pan Asian game, they're making a token gesture of running a DOA4 tournament, with a minimum entrants requirement of 20 players with some BS line about requiring community support (not that a DOA4 community exists within the PC gaming community).
The prize if the tournament reaches numbers is pretty beefy, you get to be the WCG representative and no doubt a bunch of miscelaneous crap (probably for 2nd and 3rd too at that), but yeah, $75 entry fee. Ridiculous.
Maybe we (the forumgoers here) could hook up as a "clan", bring our X-Arcade sticks, and jam on MAME all day and other such things? We could make it a decadant weekend of fighting games if there are enough of us, make it worth the $75, and enter the DOA tournament, secure me a place on the WCG team going to Seattle and Singapore (or beat me and take my place!)
Auckland I presume?
But $75... yeah, holy christ on a stick...

Yeah, it just doesn't make sense. It's like it's being set up just so they say they tried, but in reality they're doing their best to sabotage it from the get go.
xlan.co.nz is the site.
And you can check out this thread on the issue: http://xlan.co.nz/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3101&start=20 - You might recognise me, I play THE VOICE OF REASON. *sigh*
You live in Hamilton, right? I'm tempted to train with you just to have SOME representation of fighting games there... the only reason I'm really hesitant is because I'm not currently aware of how to get sticks working with 360 - I'm very reluctant to switch back to pad (especially if there's the possibility of UMK3/Hyper Fighting play).
As you say, we could always MAME it up... it's even possible I might have my arcade machine up and running by then (although we'd need a van to cart it up there)
--flux
Hells yeah dude - any time you're interested, I also have a couple of friends who could stand to learn the finer points of Guilty Gear (and probably 2D fighters in general).
The long and the short of arcade sticks on the 360 is that there is one - just one (that I know of anyway) that you can use, which is the DOA4 Hori Arcade Stick. It's alright, but Iimagine it's not everyones cup of tea, and with UMK3, I don't believe you can change the button config, probably rendering it useless unless you're adaptable to stuff like that... You could probably hack up a wired 360 controller, but that'll cost time and money...
They've lowered the minimum numbers to 12, which IMO is great news, a far more achieveable target.
This sounds interesting, I don't know if I'll have $75 to enter, though :S
Also when in July is it? I don't get back from South Africa till the 28th, so unless its during the last couple of days of july I wouldn't be able to make it anyway.
6th to 8th, unfortunately...

If we're signed up early enough with enough people, I might be able to convince the organisers to run some mini-comps (the official name for competitions that aren't WCG qualifiers or Battlefield) for us.
Maybe if we had a few extra people we could make an Auckland vs. Hamilton event out of it?

Well, we might be able to do a 2 on 2! :o
--flux
That'd be cool. I'll cover the DOA and Virtua Fighter (?), you take the 2D games (lol, all 50 of them or something) and Tekken. :P
2 on 2 would be sweet!
Flux, we need to have another event soon.
Yeah, I know... I've been really busy and haven't had time to organise anything. Also haven't heard a peep from Steve since the tourney (although I haven't said a peep either)

Couldn't we do 3 on 3 if we three went?

Gino? You available/interested in paying 75 bucks or whatever to go up & face no competition? :D
--flux
If you guys are actually interested, I'd spend some time in the Xlan forums talking shit to the PC people and such to try and rouse some competitive spirit out of them, no doubt there'll be the odd person who considers themselves decent at fighting game X or Y, then we can battle for the honour of Htown. :P

Well, apart from the $75 doller mark I'm keen.
But I will see. What is the exact date?
6th to 8th July. I don't know when specifically the console day is, or anything at all about the console bit actually (the xlan website seems to have an aversion to console things)

Actualy i really want to play umk3 now. I have visions of Lui Kang corner combos.
Videos (http://www.ultimatemk.com/cvids.php)
I've just been encoding the dvd of vids we made, actually. Lots of missed opportunities, looks a bit scrubby, but there are some good matches - not surprising considering how little practice we get. They'll go up on youtube sometime this week hopefully.
Remember the Xbox360 version of UMK3 doesn't allow button remapping... (HOW could they not put that in?!?!)
--flux
I think you should bring your laptop, unless people have a problem with that.
Is there a ps2/xbox umk3 version? Because we have no way of using our arcade sticks with 360. Which will make it rather anoying for us.
If I'm paying $75 I should be able to bring whatever the fuck I want, really.
I think there was a version released for PS2 on the Mortal Kombat Armageddon extra expensive bundle, but from what I heard from the guys at ultimatemk.com, it wasn't good. Don't think there is one for xbox.

lol. The price is kinda putting me off. Depends if I have enough save for my trip to usa or not.
I'll get onto the organisers about the issue of bringing non-xbox consoles - given that they're after their sponsorship, I don't think it's terribly likely, but you can't be sure, especially with how slack MS is being with getting back to them. At any rate, you guys could really do me a favour by signing up for the event, then register for the DOA tournament - if you decide not to go, you don't need to deregister or anything, just don't go through with paying (though if you do want to go and participate in DOA4, you'll have to pay by June 6). A show of contemplatory support is never a bad thing.
Sorry dude. I need money for usa so I won't be able to go.
Yeah, it really depends on what we're allowed to bring/do. If I'm stuck only playing DOA I probably won't bother - since I've never played 4...

Going to Evo? :D
Shit, I am in the usa for the finals but not near LA. If there isn't anything happening then I might be able to go.
Ask for a wildcard to represent for NZ. :)
Getting close now folks... guess noone from here but me signed up though... ah well, it's got the numbers to go ahead.
Sorry dude :(
As I said earlier, if more info is released about what we can/cannot do at this "console" tourney, then I'll strongly consider it. If PS2s are allowed then much fun can be had - stuck to XBox360, then not so much.
--flux
Well it's all sold out now anyway. Xlan has always been a PC focused LAN, consoles are only there because of some WCG qualifier obligations, and they're too stubborn (or something else?) to run another, more appropriate event for the console games. At any rate, it's gonna go down, so it's all good.
Cool, good luck w/the DOA4 tourney... eye on the prize! :D
