4 player tag team mode sounds amusing
Much as i generally dislike the mortal kombat games. That actually looks enjoyable. My first impression is a lot higher than MK vs DC. That being said, its still Mortal Kombat.
Mk has always had the best cinematics for a fighting game 8), but always had the tetris (moving blocks) gameplay, also the secret combos you had to figure out for yourself were lolz. i hope this one is as smooth as sf4, gameplay wise.
It looks good il get it for sure just like every other mk hope they put the basic aircombos n stuff in the command list just too get an idea of how the game works or just have trials like sf4.
Best cinematic to me was shaolin monks 8) ;D 8) i know it wasn't much of a fighting game more of an adventure game but yeah the cinematics were up there with deadly alliance, and armageddon.

Actually looking forward to this, glad there is no 3d movement this time.
- The blood in the game gushes in a realistic way and stains the fighters (think of God of war 3). The longer the blood stays on the character or the ground it will darken and decay just like real blood!
- All characters have been modeled both from the outside and the inside, and each character’s insides are unique to him when shown in the x-ray special move. Like reptile shows lizard type organs and bones, sektors shows circuit boards and cables etc…
- The MK dev team is trying to make the game balanced and competitive
- The game features froward dashes and back dashes. and just like sf4 it is done by taping forward or back twice respectively.
- The game features …… wait for it…..wait a little bit more…breath….. DASH CANCELS!!! an example was given in giantbomb.com’s podcast that the player was able to do Kunglao’s spinning move and dash cancel from it to further combo (or even super combo) the opponent.
2D fighter with 3D models ? Check.
EX bar ? Check.
FADC ? Check.
I'm staying on the fence for this one at the moment... Hopefully it's actually good, and not a blatant rip off with tacky, tacky characters.

It looks really good. Though Boon's team have a history of fucking up. I really hope there isn't too much recycled animation, so each character is given the individual treatment they deserve and some of the early stiffness and clunkiness of their recent efforts doesn't make it into this game.

Dunno if I'm a fan of some of the movement...like they just don't seem to move as realistic as they look.
...Kinda imagine kicking a ball with a fully extended leg...but connecting the ball with your knee and your leg is still fully extended.

I guess I don't really care about that all that much. I've never really been convinced by any 3d graphics, in general I just ignore them. Having said that, even the digitised graphics of old MKs didn't appeal to some people.
MK just has a completely different take on the fighting game genre... lots of different kinds of moves (e.g. teleport punches, a variety of containment moves... just quite a bit of stuff you'll never see in SF) and while some might not think the gameplay is much good, umk3 in particular is actually a pretty decent game (and lots of fun), with some quite different things you can do due to the engine. This looks like it might well have everything that made the old MKs good, and then some...
i will admit, i do like some of the inspired special moves for some of the mk characters.

Well, it certainly looks like Mortal Kombat. I think my biggest problem is how it looks when hits connect. I realise this isnt the cleverest thing to say given that its mortal kombat, but the movements of the player being hit just dont look natural enough. I like how the juggles WORK, I like the combos, my only gripe is the fact that the movements of the character who is on the back foot do NOT look right at all. They just look stiff and clunky.

I dont agree with Midway doing this. If want to make a fighting game make it for the fans and not marketing another game with it or increase the sells on one platforms.

MK was what got me into gaming...it was the first fighter I ever played.....MK1 for 50cents at the video store.....Subzero freeze loops - sweep, freeze, sweep, freeze etc... ::)

Pretty cool how the stick opens up to double as a storage space, looks like the same box as the SF Anniversary stick....I'd probably change those raised buttons and the stick out...but otherwise it looks pretty good......only thing is it'd be quite an investment just for playing one game......

Yeah the run button always felt like an Orphan to me. I always prefered Run under block in the middle row. Happ is yuck but so is MCA now thanks to the Jap stick trend, but I can fully understand why it is Happ being a western game and all. But really a pretty sick Collectors Edition.
I dunno about Kratos, Perfect fit for a fighting game but when he does less than he does in an action title he might feel watered down. Just speaking from a Soul Claibur psp standpoint. Gears of War characters could actually be pretty damn sick.
I know I am being dumb about this game, it does look sick but I have a "What have you done for me lately" viewpoint on MK after the last couple of games (Especially MK vs DC). It probably will be hella sick and slick. They seem to be focusing on alot of the problems I have had with the series. They are throwing a ton of money and time at it. MK at evo would explode heads.

I never really played mortal kombat much, but I remember the red ninja(ermac) was my favourite. Mainly cause he was a ninja and red lol. His story is pretty sweet as well a bit like Garuda from street fighter ex series.

Why not use 4 buttons and map run to lp + lk and block to hp + hk? Cause that lay out is just fugly.
Because then you can't runjab or use half your moves buffered from block
But from what I understand, run is a double tap motion on the stick in mk9. I think the 6th button is going to be used for tagging. Wish they'd confirm this stuff.

I just hope the game plays better than it looks tbh. The game play looks pretty unappealing to me atm. Looks very stilted, and when the characters actually hit each other, it looks off.
It looks clunky as shit. I know theyre trying to keep it looking like mortal kombat, but its just not working atm. I think its only the movements/when characters are getting hit that is the issue. The Models/backgrounds etc all look really nice.
Ill rent it and give it a genuine crack, but im not getting my hopes up for anything decent.

I can't say too much right now but I've played a demo build (Looks more than a demo tbh) and straight away the game feels like Super UMK3 Ex Edition or lets put it this way a proper successor to UMK3. So thats an awesome thing in my books and a roster that fans will be happy with I reckon. I will do a write up once I can.

So anything not deemed fit that a minor could play is banned which is just silly
So they have games which in NZ are R18 but Australian 12 year olds are playing

I think the thing that killed this game for me when i was pretty much convinced to get it was that button layout.
I don't want to get anymore peripherals to play these games. And it looked fucked up anyway.

demo has been on the ps3 since last week but it was an psn plus exclusive. Im not one but I think I might join it(you get some pretty deals and some free games). I just can't be bothered paying $90 for 12 months :(
It's free right now for everyone on the US psn store and free tomorrow for everyone on the NZ store hopefully. Only 500 MB which is a nice change.
Had a 3 or so of games and it's pretty fun. Haven't worked out the combo or juggling mechanics yet. All I'm doing is basic stuff.
Jump in Punch, Target combo, juggle, Special.
Don't get the differences between the punches and kicks yet I think it might be like tekken with a bit of the MK high low thrown in. Also some moves are mapped different to how you would image (Sub Zero's Ice ball is a hadouken with Kick ??? ) Graphics are really nice. fatalities are Crazy gory, don't really look as silly as they used to.
Game feels a bit stiff, but much less so than the later MK titles. Combos feel alot better but single hits seem to be a bit clumsy. I think this is a pretty early version compared to what they are showing off at conventions and expos.
We are going to have a lols tourney tomorrow night I'll upload match footage after the guys get have had some time with it.
Got my hopes up for coming home from work to download this, only to find it still only has the PSplus version :( tomorrow hopefully!

Played the demo but didn't like it very much, mainly due to the animations. They are kinda stiff and not very stylish. It's crazy how Virtua Fighter 5 got slammed for its animation but no one complained about MK9.

been playing the demo on expert thought id share a few things...
I know what you mean by the gameplay is stiff... but all new MK's have been like that so whoopdeeshit.
Combos in this I haven't fully sussed out... BUT you can go directly into moves pretty easy, for instance with sub zero I can combo+freeze then combo again into Xray.... Fucks their shit up without them being able to do SHIT... As far as I know this is all pretty free form so whatever people come up with should work within reason... and...
Street fighter 4 is still better ;)
I actually enjoyed mucking around with this demo the other day. Damage is going to be pretty nuts though I reckon.
So um yeah, I am pleasantly surprised. Hopefully it is that good, and is tourney worthy.

One question though. There is a stance change button, is this like Virtua Fighter's stances? In VF some combo's won't work depending on what stance you or your opponent is in.

Spent all day playing it
I have to say it is very different from the 2d versions having a dash instead of a run. Also at the moment im finding it hard to start an offense.
Standing jab stops most jump in attempts and crouching kicks seem really good but i have only been playing against AI
The combo system is more strict than I had expected i was expecting it to be more like MKvs DC. Gona hit the lab tomorrow and see how the characters compare Im liking kabal at the mo

tbh I'm probably the most unhype for this game and probably won't pick it up.
A certain hamiltonian person that we all know trained me in vf5 for like 4 hours at xlan. Don't remember much about that game anymore. Also DoA4 is awesome.
I'm really still on the fence about it. I've played the demo quite a bit and it feels clunky and mashy though fun. Dunno if I really want to invest all that much time into it really. But the more footage I see the better it looks and even if the gameplay seems a bit janky, there's no denying the amount of polish and care has gone into the game.
I'm going to have a proper go of it at local mashup on release since some of the guys are picking it up. I guess I'll have to wait and see, but keep the impressions coming in. I'm really interested in what people that have spent a decent amount of time with the full game think of it.

That's what's keeping my mind open about it. I heard from previews and podcasts that the final product is way different as well. :) It's something that definitely has potential. I'm gonna play it then hire it and give it a decent chance.
I just hope the PS3 doesn't sell out if I finally want to pick it up like the ps3 version of MvC3 has. Kiwi retailers have a habit of underestimating the popularity of fighting games :)
A lot of the demo combos you see on youtube only work to an extent.
e.g. you can't get anything after uppercut and the moves deal slightly less damage.

I can say without a shadow of doubt the story mode is the most entertaining of any fighting game I've ever played. Some of the matches are legitimately difficult too, although it adjusts the difficulty with retrying the same match over and over, so eventually Shao Kahn becomes beatable lol. While I WOULD have liked to have played as some of the bad guys, it wouldn't really tell the canon story, and I guess that's what the ladder mode is for.
I've only played like 2 rungs of the challenge tower, I guess I'll go through more of it but the incentive isn't that huge tbh. I've already unlocked the alternate costumes in the 'krypt' through the 'koins' gained through story, and those are pretty much the only gamechanging elements. Some of the concept art and whatnot is really cool though.
For the game itself, coming from UMK3 I'm actually finding it a bit strange. The button layout is kind of different. In MK<=3 you had Light/Hard punch/kick and block but now it's Front/Back punch/kick and block. Sweep used to be B+LK, which maps fine to B+BK, but what used to be uppercut D+HP is now D+BP, so it feels like I'm uppercutting with light punch the way my buttons are set up (which is NOT the default). Hard to know what the best is to get used to. Kind of similar problem with MvC3's input system coming from MvC2.
All the chars moves have changed too... All Liu Kang's fireball specials used to be F,F+button but are now B,F+button. Sub Zero's ice moves tend to be on different buttons now, and his Slide (previously LP+BLK+LK) is now B,F+LK.
Dashing with a double tap is really strange also, coming from UMK3's run button.
None of which will make any bloody difference to most of you who aren't actually familiar with old mortal kombats, of course.
Haven't really got much more to report on yet. Haven't gone into training mode or even anything with a normal character select screen. Combos weren't particularly obvious though, juggle timing I think is while not strict, not super easy either.
Definitely picked up a few thoughts on chars that I'm keen to try a lot more though. Most of the ones used during story (all goody good earthrealm types) felt good, even though I had no interest in them prior.
Cheers for the write up LN :) really interested in the story mode and will try and rent it when it comes out to hoon through it. Strangely enough it sounds kind of simlar to the pitch Sirlin made to capcom SF4 funnily enough :D
I really admire how much work nethereal have put into the amount of kontent for this game, hopefully capcom and other companies will follow suit in the future. Sure stories and extras shouldn't be the main focus, but it sure is a nice bonus if you take the time out to do it.
Yeah, the attention to detail and single player modes are what made me buy it, really. Definitely should be encouraged IMO.
The one thing I've mulled over which I'm kind of on the fence about is the Xray system. I previously thought "ah well, they aren't that much damage, I'll probably just use meter for Breakers" but now after trying them, I'm a bit more worried. They feel very much like Supers in Super Turbo. Some are absolute game changers when the character has full meter. We shall see how it pans out.
One great thing about MK is with the kombat kodes you can just disable various bits that you want :)

I don't think so, except possibly for dashing, but there's a dash cancel ala MvC3 wavedashing which might mitigate that somewhat once I've had a play with it.

honestly ive been playing MK games for years and i really doubted they could do anything new with the fatalities....everyones seen all that before and we are so desensitsed to it all anyway....hell was i totally wrong....the xray shots of all the internal damage are brutal...gratuitous even...i love it...fav fatality so far probably is Kung Laos drag someone over your spinning hat and saw them in half from crotch to head fatality....early days tho.

I have to say after watching the game in action it is a damn beautiful game.
I mean, the amount of effort put into it is basically a love letter to the fans that have stuck to the series and to the olds that loved the originals.

For all my criticisms of MK the videos for 9 make it look OK :o and I have a couple of friends that want to play it so I might learn a character or two just to put them in their place haha. Actually liking this game at the moment. Really like how the super bar is managed and how when you go for a combo you cant just really hit confirm into it by spamming lp/lk etc. You have to kinda take a gamble with it.

After watching a few matches on Wednesday Night Fights today the game actually looked like fun. Kinda in a stupid way, but still fun. I'll hire it out for sure, I think it may have a lot more casual players though which would be incentive to put them in their place lol (like friends of mine who think they are beast at tekken cause they can mash). I've really changed my view of this game.
Online is ass supposedly but I have not tested it myself.

It's basically a 2d tekken with actual zoning. Some characters have high/low mixups all day.

Started catching on with Cyrax's bomb loop. Pretty damn nasty stuff coming off a throw but the stink thing is that it's only for robo Cyrax. When using Human Cyrax the hit stun after the throw bnb combo is not as much as Robo and the timing goes off for the follow up aswell.

The problem with that layout is that Xray is on MK+HK+HP so it's not very convenient to press. I actually use that layout but with blk and tag switched.
I was having a jam on this at Kurt's last night. Seems like it could be fun.
Also it has a robot that is my favorite colour! Yellow!

TBH I wouldn't be surprised if (read: I hope) that Cyrax command throw gets the hitstun decreased a lot, because that bomb loop is a bit too good. Cyrax has a formidable zoning game without it, but that bomb loop basically makes him into a Zangief with the best projectile zoning in the game as well. It's also not hard to get in when you have a teleport rofl
As for broken, I don't believe it really. There is a lot of bullshit in it, but everyone has it by the looks. I wouldn't be surprised if Raiden gives Cyrax a really hard time for a start, even with the bomb loop. And the only wakeup tool cyrax has is teleport, which isn't exactly a 'get off me' move. You can kinda fuck him up quite a lot in the corner.
I mean broken as in like everyone is broken. Like as in a happy rainbow broken.
Like, that's the way I see this game working. Everyone being so broken that it works. Like the GG games.
Cyrax in the corner is not the best place he wants to be. His teleport as a reversal is actually kaka so your best bet is to block right and then if the opportunity rises either safe bnb or teleport away to gather some ground.
How is the online? If its decent, I'll go buy this on Sunday instead of getting Kate a birthday present haha.

I actually had fun playing this last night at Munta's place. I'm thinking of maining Kabal and alt Kitana. Zoning in this game feels good!

I definitely like this game. Reptile seems pretty good will definitely main him. I really want to go buy this game but from what I've heard online isn't the best. I don't want another game that I only use training mode.

Liking Quan Chi. His zombie trance move is hilarious to me and his xray is sick. Also his damage boost move is kinda fun to play around with, but I'm not sure how to make it only give me the damage boost and not the health boost lol.

Yeah I forgot about that too, was wondering why I couldnt do it. Story mode is really awesome, up to Stryker's chapter. Really feels like the old mk2 and 3 which I like.

Enjoying using Ermac and Subzero, Baraka and Stryker are also cool.
So many changes to the mentality of SF play but I am enjoying the new challenges. I love how precision timing has been replaced by 'the quicker you can mash it out the better'.....haha. Having a 2 button Xray is quite funny and loads of unblockables stop turtle play. Missing the footies a bit so far to me the players feel quite short range with their pokes.....good paralyzing or juggling specials and a teleport move seem to be the order for a stable character. Enhanced moves are really cool and offer loads of options when juggling......nice to have a breaker too when your being juggled to shit!
Biggest adjustment for me is the block button, but I do like not having to worry about ambiguous cross ups.
Love all the extra detail and care that has been taken with the design and the story and fight modes are really well done. It's a really well crafted game.....time will tell if fighting mechanic is a sticker for me. After I've fully adjusted I'll no doubt settle into it.

Noob's pretty boss eh....was doing the challenge tower 166, and he was carving me up with his inky madness....seems to have everything covered with all those projectiles and that teleport throw is broken as fuck

Yeah I think I caught the brunt of some of his punishing ones eh...haha, they seem to push you waaaaay over the other side of the screen.....so he can spam projectiles at you....exactly like broken Sagay in vanilla
One combo ended in that ink slide shadow that he throws out (5 hit 25 + damage) ....that one was pretty boss.

Pretty much. But you don't get to be morphed very long and the more you attack the less time you have in it. Thinking I will just play keep away as much as I can and if it calls for it morph. But he has such good projectiles that I don't even need to get close to you to win.

So been mucking around with Jax. Doesn't seem like he has much juggle potential. Mucking around I'm using this bnb I've come up with
qcb+3, nj+1,1,2,dash,1,2,dash,f+4 xx qcf+2. 29% leaves opponent at a good range for qcf+3
Ya Jax seems ass in the combo department. I just abuse his superman punch and thats about it. He only has one launch which is his ground and pound which is super slow. You can use his overhead move d, u+4 to mix people up with his chains but it does not lead to anything big.
