the trailer is one of the coolest pieces of comic media I've ever seen. I so wish they would make a whole movie like this
as for a mmorpg? no thanks

its like Star Wars old republic, amazing cgi trailers, bland grindy bollocks gameplay.
sorry for the hate, but it reminds me of the amazing cover art on atari 2600 games. bit of false advertising I think

I'm assuming you'll get the PS3 version? You know there's a monthly subscription ay. It's $14.95 a month in the US I think so I'm guessing at least $25 a month here.

So somehow you've managed to play both TOR and DCU before beta phase? Please hook me up with your connections.

With Sony online having developed both Free Realms and EQ I'm pretty interested to see how this shit turns out, they probably wont have any sort of a decent competitive PvP aspect so I doubt I'm going to play lol. In regards to TOR it's probably not going to be very grindey at all. They're almost developing it as a single player game you need to pay a sub for..... lol.

what I meant was, these game have epic trailers, but from what I've seen of the gameplay its kinda misleading.
I mean if mmorpg's are you thing, then all good. I just cant  see the the attraction, (unless I'm underating having a second job you have to pay for)

anyway I'll stop trolling :)
I would of though City of Heroes had this market sussed? seems like DC will be very similar?

Wah? Ongoing money...?
Title: Re: DC Universe
Post by: geneterror on July 27, 2010, 02:39:22 PM
Yeah ongoing costs...

I don't know why people complain about this (not aimed at you Simon) but the developers of MMO's have to cover a lot of bills in regards to the upkeep of a persistant virtual world including server/bandwidth costs etc. I don't know why people are surprised about the ongoing cost. It's why I will skip this unless some of you guys pick it up. I'm waiting for FF14 :)

Tried that with dekaron. Didn't work so well. It's not worth keeping servers up 24/7 with routine servicing and new developers for only like $80.

oh no poor blizzard! shit they must be struggling....... oh wait, they make about 150,000,000 a month!! off the poor saps that get roped into it.
(not to mention the extra almost 1 billionevery time an expansion comes out. this is based on 10,000,000 players, even though its more like 12.
11 mill?..... pft. its BIG business. with these kinds of numbers they want to get people playing and keep them playing pure and simple.

the way I see it this is becoming the matrix. blizzard is the machines. we are the batteries, making money instead of energy.

I heard activision were going to charge a fee for call of duty (not the one comin out in november) since its the only way to make money apparently

i understand WoW which has servers but they are just being greedy with COD

If more people start doing this i am done with that shit and going to stick with stuff like ggpo

Not saying that they dont make heaps of money, but they actually take a hit when they drop an expansion.  They dont make extra from it.

But yeah WoW is so addictive.  Some people seriously need to get help with that shit.  I used to play it alot, and I definitely felt the "pull" of it.  I sort of play it in spurts.  Ill redo my account for a month or two and play it.  Then I'll just leave it for a few months.  THe endless grinding really annoys me and also the excessive min/maxing attitude you need to have.

Also WoW players embody the whole "I'm anonymous on the internet so I can be a dick" attitude which can get tiresome fast.

In saying that, I wouldn't mind having a crack at this DC Universe when It comes out.  Make a big smashing guy that runs like the flash!!

wow sucks, end of story..
I played for 10 days and got lv 29 and I gave up. Nothing knew from it, raids, grinding, lame pvp, lame skills, ANOYYING MAPS especially in the city.. there are no indications where things are, u have to ask a freaking guard and then find it on ur mini map (useless), GRAPHICS SUCK BALLS.
There are plenty of better next Generation MMo's coming out late this year and early next year which I am waiting for.
I'll put a list up  on another thread FYI :)

it was a response to your baffling post that it cost alot of money to keep wow running, which comparitivly is bullshit.
Now the problem with wow is that it doesnt suck. its amazingly well made, problem is its made to lure people in and keep them playin/paying.I've watched too many people's RL level go down as their wow level goes up. its kinda sad.

And last time I played you at Yifans I won first game & you took second. seems about even to me.

Just wondering if anyone bought this? I would like to try it but I hate the idea of an ongoing fee. I wish there was an offline mode as well.

The only reason I would buy this is if the create a character feature is really awesome. Don't care so much about DC.

Title: Re: DC Universe
Post by: geneterror on February 01, 2011, 09:41:01 AM
This game is actually really fun. I wasn't planning on grabbing it but I had an EB voucher and the first month is free so I though why not.

The character creation is versatile and fun. There seems like some obvious things missing from character creation at the start but then you find you pick up stuff during the game. I wanted to make an Iron Man/Rockteer type character but couldn't find a jet pack to use. 7 levels in a jet pack dropped in a fight now I have my cool Iron Man looking charcter ;D

The skills are quite varied as you get one tree for movement type, one for weapon type and one for your power and all three of them level up sepeately. Flight seems like the obvious choice for movement but a lot of people have moves that can ground you >:(

Bit of traditional MMO grinding but it's broken up with boss "instances" and really well done comic cut scenes. You can pretty much solo it up until later levels but you will need to team up with others for hard instances and raids etc. To break it up a bit though you choose a mentor at the start of the game and each mentor gives you different  missions to do even though the main story arc doesn't change it stops it from being to samey as you level different characters.

If it stays as fun as this in the endgame I'll definitely be renewing my sub for a few months. At this point I can easily see myself renewing for 3 months at the end of this month, the versatility of the character creation alone means a lot of potential builds to try out and get to level 30 (the current level cap).

I have also been playing this and I really like it. Character creation is quite fun and end game is not too bad. One thing is if you don't like constantly getting owned by high levels then don't go on a PvP server. Level 30's love to make low levels a living hell. Trust me I have two of them and when I get bored that is what I do.

I love doing that to lowbies in MMOs.  It's also hillarious when you're a lowbie and someone is ganking you hardout and you're frantically trying to get away.  Like run to a safe town so that the guards save you and shit.  Stand beside the gaurd and /lol at them hahaha.

They are for 30, 90 or 120 days at the moment. It starts from the time you pay for it and counts down even if you don't play at all.

The way I'm looking at it at the moment is I buy quite a few games anyway. Most of them I finish in under a week or two then they're done and they cost me $100 to $130, this is the case with most games that aren't fighting games for me. So looking at it that way paying $25 a month for a game isn't actually that bad. Especially a game that will continually have things added to it and has an evolving world.
Like I said though Simon you're welcome to come to my place any time to check it out and see if it's worth it.

Yeah it's really obvious that it was meant for a PS3 controller!
I'm only level 8, got it on Saturday and only had yesterday afternoon to play it. I started 4 chars though so I could try out some of the skills.
I've decided to level my flying, hand blaster and fire char NovaFlare to level 30 first! Sux that we can't play PS3<->PC, before it came out they said they were hoping to make it cross platform but I guess they ran into to many problems.

New content/missions etc on the way already.
QuoteWhen Sony Online Entertainment announced that there'd be a $15 a month subscription charge for DC Universe Online -- the company's newest MMO -- the developers said that there'd be "roughly" monthly content updates to make that investment worth the money. Now, less than a month after its release, DC Universe Online is ready to announce February's round of goodies, and the package includes a new story mission, a new duo, and tons of extra stuff.

"What's happening in February is more like what's happening going forward -- we're going to just keep growing the thing," said Chris Cao, DCUO game director.

The only bad news is that we'll have to wait until "mid to late February" to get our hands on all this stuff, but once it's live -- with the exception of the seasonal goodies -- it's live for good.
Catwoman Content

SOE has been hyping a classic character playing a large role in this batch of content, and it turns out it's Catwoman. Selina Kyle is going to factor into a few new parts to DCUO.

    * Level 30 Catwoman Episode: Here, your character will race to Gotham Museum and find Catwoman robbing the joint. Then, some ancient Egyptian artifacts turn people into lions and tigers that you have to fight. Look for five boss battles in this mission.
    * Legends PVP: Catwoman will now be playable in "Play as Iconic" PVP.
    * Multiplayer Race: Chase Catwoman with your friends.
    * New Loot: You'll now be able to collect the "ancient Mayan Armor" and "Cat Burglar" gear.

Valentine's Day Content

Believe it or not, February is for lovers -- and now, DCUO is, too. In a rather interesting move, the Goddess of Love is pissed and has put down fountains across Metropolis. Enter one of these, and you'll be transported to a 100-person instance where you'll play as a cherub and battle "to determine the true meaning of love."

    * Collectable Hearts: Completing races, participating in PVP and other actions will earn you hearts that you can use to purchase chocolates and gifts to give to other players.
    * PVP Battles: Dunk the other team into the fountain.
    * Love Alert: This is a four-player boss fight against the Goddess of Love, Devotion and Scorn.
    * Loot: There's a new harlequin clown suit with hearts and a cherub disguise to earn.
    * Mock the Boss: When you replay boss fights, you'll be able to give them "be mine" cards for Feat points.

    * New Duo: A two-player Bane duo will be available for players.
    * PVP Expansion: There will be a new Gotham PVP zone.
    * New Tier 2 Raid: There's a new eight-player raid zone for the Batcave. You'll fight alongside Batman against Brainiac and Brother Eye.
    * Buy and Sell: Auction houses will go live in the Watchtower and the Hall of Doom so that places can swap gear on a massive scale.
    * Additions: New collections, races and investigations will be added.

Cant wait for this patch. They have already fixed a lot of the real broken stuff with abilities and skills and this patch kinda shows they are in it for the long run.

Yeah I know, if they keep up with the monthly content like they hope for I won't need to buy any more games once MvC3 drops as well.

So then it would be more cost effective to buy this game later rather than earlier so that more stuff will be released.

It really depends on how well it does tbh.  If the game dies out, then it'll suck cause there'll be no one to play with.

Generally, the way they release the content is so that no matter where you step into the game, there should be enough to tie you over until the next content patch.

Hey Graham. Can you create characters while offline?

No it won't even let you start the game if your subscription isn't current, it asks you at the title screen to renew your subscription.

I don't know if waiting would make any difference, they are planning updates monthly and the games not small now ;D but some events are time limited so you only have a month to do them then they remove them again and some replace exisiting ones. A lot of the good stuff in the updates is endgame quest/raids and only applies to those that have already hit level 30. My guy is still only level 10.

Like I said come over and have a look, character creation is cool but maybe you won't like the actual gameplay.

I liked the PS2 DC game. Thought it was a lot better than those X-men/Marvel equivalents. So I'm hoping it would play like that.

Its an MMO. It plays like WOW, but with DC characters.

Not really. It's not slow, clunky, point and click. It plays a lot more action based like inFamous/God Of War in a persistant MMO world, right down to the square, square, x styled combos etc.
Plus you can fucking fly without a mount and shoot beams from your hands.

yeah, it plays NOTHING like WoW.

I call lies. Its WoW, DC edition.

But for real it actually looks pretty interesting. It just seems like something that needs a lot of time invested, like any mmo, but with MVC3 on the horizon, I dont think i can make that kind of commitment.

Its an action mmorpg. Think of it as God of War or Devil May Cry gameplay where you press certain buttons to create combos and you have spells which stun or do extra amounts of damage etc. You can also block and dodge as well so it seems more interactive and less like a grind. Also just got my 2nd 30 and thinking of making a villain but their armor tiers look shit lol.

Hey I heard something strange about this game. Someone said you can't name your character the same as someone elses. And it was first in first served.

Is this right?

That is correct, all MMO's are like that. It has to be that way because you are all in the same "world" so you can't have characters with the same name. It keeps your game save on their server stored by character name so it would be a nightmare if more than one person had the same name. You have to remember this game is entirely online so you're sharing your gamespace with all the other people playing simultaneously.

Also it would suck to have made a cool character, given him a persona and a good name and then warp into the main hub and see someone with the same name and powers.

Simon what shifts are you on this week? Suzannah has her own copy now as well.

I've got Friday off. But prob be a bit busy this week.

But man that name thing really bugs me and even bugs me enough not to get this game. So that means that I can't put any existing characters I have created into this game. That sucks so badly. That was going to be the whole reason for me buying it.

I don't know why they didn't just use the players PSN username as the name and then have the character named what ever you like.

Also I don't get it why you can't have characters named the same. I mean that is not like the real world. I know there are at least two or three other people in Auckland alone that share the same name as me.

Yeah but it's different to the real world as you don't have to save your life and log out, the characters get saved by the character name it's just how it works. So they can't have to characters with the same name because they would overwrite each others saves. You can put the characters you've created in as long as the names are original. All the "obvious" names are taken so you can't have Dark Angel or stuff that's to obvious and probably taken and you can't name them after an existing DC Hero for obvious reasons. If your name has have enough thought put into it should be original enough that nobody else will have taken it. Suzannah wanted to call her character Kittie Katto, which was not taken because it's fairly original and matches the character theme/idea.

Plus I think you're in the minority. My fire guy is called NovaFlare, I'd be pissed off if I walked out of the main hub area and saw a fire guy with handblasters standing there called NovaFlare. It would ruin the illusion of my character being unique in a world filled with actual other people playing there heroes.

Honestly I don't know that you will like it. Well I you might like the actual gameplay but I understand what you want from it, the character creator. But the things you dislike so far are things that are common to all MMO's, it's just how they work. Most people are happy the way it is so it's not going to change.

All my character's names are pretty common unoriginal single words. Since I made them when I was in high school. :/ I guess I could just put little symbols in front of their names or something.

Oh well. Yeah, still hope to get to see it in action at yours before the Marvel buzz takes over everyone's lives. lol.

Yeah it's Ranbats this Friday and I'll be at work all day. Maybe if you're not doing anything on Sunday you can come over for a look if you not busy Suzannah and I will be playing it anyway most likely, you got my cell number anyway so just let me know.

The main reason you can't have the same name is pretty much the same reason why we can't have the same names on this forum. Rather than feeling stink about me having the same powers and name as you because we had the same idea, how would you feel if I specifically made a character called CrazyMobius who looked like you and went around talking shit to everyone knowing there was nothing you could do about it? It's also just a bitch if you log in to send a message to geneterror but instead the message is sent to the other geneterror in Alaska. On the internet, a name is all you have.
