This is one I've been waiting for, the latest 2d incarnation of KOF! XI has been getting very positive press, supposedly it's a very good (and fun!) game. It has a tag system reminiscent of MvC2, with some pretty brutal combos from the couple of vids I've seen. Definitely one to pick up!
--flux
Definitely a good game and the best KOF game since 2002. They have made the controls "looser" like a Capcom game which makes it easier to do combos. By looser I mean you don't have to be as accurate with your moves like you do in older KOF games it feels more like 3S or even CvS2. As a Capcom player I feel more at home with this KOF game than I have with any in the past. Not really into the judgement system especially seeing as the rounds are so short but that's only a small complaint about an overall awesome game.
Will definitely be getting this when it comes out over here though.
According to GPstore...

I just hope the load time is decent... seen some match vids of NGBC and the loading is HORRENDOUS. Similarly, KOF2k2 on ps2 is just painful when used to the arcade version...
--flux
Ouch. :/
Whats up with load times like that? Games like 3s (on DC), and Guilty Gear X2 #Reload (ps2) seem to load really nicely. Are SNK just lazy as hell?
And yes, Colour Edit mode, rawr. Gawd, how long until 2D games grasp this more and allow you to save your colors on your memory card, and plug them into the arcade machine, ala Virtua Fighter in Korea (i think)?
Sure it's not some huge game breaking improvement, but as 2D fighter fans we can't want too much, because it just ain't happening.

I don't know the technical reasons behind massive load times on 2d fighters (I mean shit, Tekken5 basically has none!), but I assume it's mainly memory-based. I guess with KOF you can't really load 6 chars worth of animations into memory at once, so I have a sneaky suspicion that XI will be nasty too.
Why SamSho5 (allegedly) has horrible animation though, I couldn't say; So it could well still be just lazy programming.
As for colours, CvS2 on DC had colour edit... and doesn't GGXX#R?
--flux
Yeah CvS2 on PS2 does as well. Guilty Gear X2 #Reload doesen't, but I think Isuka might? But that game is hardly important. :/ T'would be nice (branching off the memory card thing), if it loaded your custom colour, and maybe even like a name that went underneath your characters name. Like how people add it to video footage.
But oh well. Capcom games tend to have enough colour palettes for everyone to find something they like, but it's always nice to be individual.
I think SNK are just lazy coders. The only 2D fighters I've experienced bad load times for are SNK ports. Also, in NGBC I find that there's always a bit of slowdown with the Order Select screen, on PS2 anyway.
I think what Fate means is that you should be able to save your colors to a memory card, then plug it into an arcade cab, so you can use your own colors on the actual arcade machine. Which would be wonderful.
Personally, I think it won't be long until color edit mode is as commonplace (at least in home version ports) as Survival mode.
Incidentally, since this is a KoF thread, apparently for KoF XII, they will be redoing all graphics from the ground up. KoF12 will be on the Taito Type X2 board. I don't know anything about it, but I'd imagine it should be at least as good as Atomiswave, which they used for a few games (Metal Slug 6, KoF Neowave/XI, Samsho Tenka, NGBC) - why would they step back from AWave to lesser hardware? Anyway, my point here is that we can )hopefully) expect some gorgeous sprites in KoF12.
From Wikipedia..
QuoteIt has also been revealed that the game will undergo a complete graphical overhaul, confirmed by Nona, artist in charge of the art in the The King of Fighters XI endings. All the sprites used in previous games for over 10 years will be dropped. The programmers have stated their intention is to create the "ultimate 2D fighting game". Nona reaffirmed this once again in this year's The King Of Fighters Year End Party 2006 in Tokyo.
EDIT because Fate posted while I was:

Yes, Isuka has a very user-friendly color edit mode. (As well as a Final Fight-esque scrolling beat 'em up mode). Too bad the game was broken by horrendous controls.

Nope. I have the PAL version of NGBC, load times are indeed horrendous.

i'm pretty sure it's better than the arcade release. or maybe i'm imagining things. not that it really matters, since no one plays ngbc anymore. i think more people play svc: chaos, which is horribly sad.

Fuck, SVC is probably the most played 2d fighter in Hamilton... how bad is that? MvC2 cab right next to it. More people play Xmen vs SF than MvC2, too... *cries*
I guess that's an interesting point... both NGBC and SamSho Tenka have pretty bad loads in the arcade, so maybe it's not so easy a problem to fix for a port. I know atomiswave loads off a cd, so if they can't optimise the ARCADE release...

I would, but I haven't found a network adaptor yet. I've only had a ps2 for about 2 months now :D
I've never really played XvSF seriously, I did try to learn it at one point but was put off by Air Dashing being performed with PPP... too hard :D I think I'd like the game, guess I just have to find the right characters. I likum the Chun Li... maybe Charlie or Gambit...

pfff, i laugh at your gato.
its your damn ralf that pisses me off. him and friggin tizoc.
Also, judging from the release date shifting of Kof2006 and CCC2, I very much doubt this will ACTUALLY be released next week... but here's hoping!
--flux
Direct them to sirlin.net :D
Also, looks like "late March" was the correct of the two dates they previously had. What used to say "2nd march" now says 28th.
Whhhhhy?
I also guess its time to learn to play someone aside from Robert =/
Sneaky suspicion this is going to be pushed HELLA back, as amazon.co.uk has it listed as release for MAY FUCKING 25th.
Jesus, I might as well just download the jap version to play with in the meantime!

I might have to, too. At this rate I'll have more downloaded Jap versions than legit versions :(
But I will be out of the country then... so dammit GPstore, give now.
Yep, big hoo-ing surprise, it's been moved back to 28th April (which I also believe to be a complete guess).
Well, one thing is for sure, I don't think I'll bother preordering stuff from GPStore again...
--flux
GPstore is usually good, don't know whats going on here though :S
The bad news is that I leave for South Africa on april 26th, and I won't be back till July. Although at this rate, it probably still won't be out yet when I get back.
Funny thing is I've never even played it, even at Yifan's.
Late may... looks like my decision to download was a good one... now I just need to get my PS2 back...
--flux
Actually, GPStore has just informed me that their "suppliers have advised [them] today that they can no longer source [King of Fighters XI] for us", so will refund my prepay money. I must say I'm supremely disappointed in this, since having pirated the game like any other reasonable fan that got shafted by delays, I have found the game to be really good - up there with '2k2 and '98. I guess I can only say anyone else that wants to play it should pirate the damn thing as well, because it looks like you won't get it in NZ. Might be possible to get it in from AU though, the release date there is apparently 14th June.
Boo...
:(
--flux
fuckers. thats it, im getting my ps2 chipped and im gonna start pirating

Yea wot u waiting 4
You can also get a swap magic from trademe for about 30 bucks - works fine, although it IS a little annoying having to swap and stuff when you're just going to boot up for some practice.
--flux
When I first played my pirated one, I actually didn't enjoy it that much. Although I was thoroughly impressed with the overall menu/UI artwork, which is something SNK has never been good at, imo.
However, I was playing this again the other day, and I really enjoyed it. I'm being lame and using a regular game team (team Garou, Terry/Kim/Duck), but it was great.
Anyway, since South Africa is also PAL, I'm hoping I may be able to pick it up here. Wouldn't be the first game I've seen here that isn't available in NZ (Resevoir Dogs game, hoo!). So here's hoping.
The artwork and overall presentation of XI is fantastic, in my opinion. The one thing which annoys me with the UI is that when you're picking the order of your team, it makes you wait for ages while it shows you which buttons to press before you can actually select them - and if you know which to press, you can't cut out the wait! Garrrr....
But yeah, I'd recommend this game to anyone, and especially Marvel players. Hyperhop basically makes it seem like everyone has a triangle jump, for really quick high/low mixups which are pretty safe, whenever you want. The quick shift combos are also basically like DHCs, except you can do them on normal hits as well as supers. It's just a really fun, fast, action-packed fighting engine.
Unfortunately I haven't had much time to play stuff recently and GGXXAC has been getting priority on the odd occasion... but I'll be coming back to XI, don't you worry!!
--flux
I wont. the fact that its on the WORST machine at yifans means i wont be playing it again until i get a copy for ps2. Which sucks because its my favourite 2d fighter.
Is there someone you can petition to about that? The problem is that all the people that WOULD play XI now won't because the cab sucks - and then it'll just be removed from yifan's entirely because no-one plays it. If you can hassle someone enough that they just switch it into a better cab because they are sick of dealing with you, then everyone wins :D

Hah, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnCcnDWIi7Y
XI Pal bugs.

Well bugger me sideways, GPStore has it on the site again - listed as available July 6th

Check out the price... $50! Get that shit!

YES
Awesome! ...Aside from the bugs.
The best part of having an english version will be knowing what the requirements are for the challenges :S
(GP Store please still have it in stock when I get back to NZ. GPStore please still have it in stock when I get back to NZ. GPStore please still have it...)
Just got notification that my order of KoFXI has shipped!
Kick ass...
--flux
And finally, it's in my hands! This game deserves a front page news item, so I'll put one up when I get home from work
--flux
Praise be!
Nice. when do you reckon its gonna hit the shelves?
Official release date is the 6th, I think. So give a couple of days after that I guess - probably a good idea to call up your local and ask though.
--flux
Oh and I can definitely confirm that Tizoc/Griffon Mask is listed on the char select screen as "Mai" and that the text in endings runs off the screen... sloppy, sloppy, Ignition!
Seems fine in all other respects though - also has 50/60Hz select upon start up.
--flux
Sorry guys 2D fighter noob here lol
But to the Auckland dudes is this the KOF game that use to be where Melty Blood is ?.
If so great I'll buy it cause I use to love watchin everyone play that game especially that Gambit like guy that uses cards hes cool.
You are correct, and the guy with the cards is Oswald - he's pretty buff. It's also quite a nice game to get into, the controls and stuff are quite... friendly.
--flux
I spent a year of my life playing this game as opposed to mvc2. and now my mvc2 game sucks and kofxi is on a different machine. Thanks yifans, you rock.
Just as a kick in the ass for those of us that pre-ordered, GPStore are having a sale - they are going Online only.
To celebrate, they are knocking $10 off the price of KoFXI!
Not content with it being super affordable before ($50) - now it's only $40! Absolutely no excuse to buy it now!
--flux
One thing I believe is missing from the PAL release is support for RGB monitors - I've just made a cable for PS2 which hooks directly up to my monitor in my arcade cabinet, but the game needs to support 480p for it to work. Usually this is selected in games which support it by holding down Triangle and X when booting, however this does diddly squat for the PAL release of KoFXI (works with the JP release though).
Kinda disappointing, but not the end of the world - just means if I want to skip the TV Tuner part of my setup I need to use the JP release.
--flux
I picked this up on Saturday and racked up about 4 hours. It's good to finally be able to practice without pumping in money.
Being able to practice special>super>dream is helpful for me.
