Title: Want a solo Tool gig around BDO 2011?
Post by: Skullator on November 01, 2010, 09:51:04 PM
Then liking this facebook page could be relative to your interests, this may be our only chance assuming tool doesn't go on world tour with a new album release late 2011.
They have confirmed I think 2 solo gigs for aussie, but 0 for NZ so far.

Copy pasting a generic message I am spreading around numerous websites and message boards in an attempt to get 500 likes as quickly as possible, read italics below if you care about why this actually has a chance at success, otherwise just like the following page on facebook.

Cheers

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Help-us-get-Tool-to-play-a-sideshow-in-NZ-2011/162115330485697 (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Help-us-get-Tool-to-play-a-sideshow-in-NZ-2011/162115330485697)

Hey guys.
At the start of each year there's a concert that goes around Australia and New Zealand, it's pretty much the biggest main stream concert of each year for both countries.

Tool has confirmed for 2011 big day out, considering they have been my favorite band since like 1999 the news that they are playing in my country is always good enough to "Make my year"
They were at the 2007 big day out and blew my mind once already.
Thing is.. they are only doing solo "Tool" performances in Australia at this stage, 2 of them I think.
Nothing planned for New Zealand solo gig.

I have a friend who has read every single word that has ever appeared on www.toolband.com since about the year 2000, he has even gone through phases of sifting through the source code (HTML) on the page every now and then. This is because tool does something called VIRAL MARKETING, meaning that they often leave clues and hints to their upcoming content and tour schedules in very strange fasions, but yeah this guy is OBSESSED with them far more than me.
Fact of the matter is after doing this for more than a decade he has established a text relationship with both tools webmaster, and their drummer Danny Carey.

Basically he just said in passing to them "Sucks you guys cant do a solo gig in NZ" and they said " Oh we hadn't thought about it, but last time (solo) was really fun! Do people still like us there?"
Lol, do people still like Tool? give us a fucking break you modest cunts!

Long story short, they have said a good way to gauge interest these days is number of "Likes" of the idea on facebook.
If we can get 500 likes on this facebook page, Tool might do a solo show for us as well as Big day out concert.
(Walk in the park, didn't we get some shoes like 3000 votes or some shit a while back?)

http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Help-...162115330485697 (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Help-us-get-Tool-to-play-a-sideshow-in-NZ-2011/162115330485697)

Nobody will be looking at the names of the likes, and I'll be asking more websites than just this one. Your privacy and anonymity is ensured.

Thanks in advance for any help you choose to give the cause, I appreciate it immensly.

seen them twice. good the first time. second time was a repeat of the first. maynard giving the exact same speech about wielding the positive energy at the concert was almost enough to make me vomit

D-, would not see again.

The point of supporting good live music post the 70's.
You just missed it ;[

Try naming me another musician who splits his talent between multiple bands and still has the time to keep every single gig completely free of re-hash stage talk lol.
I think it's more about the music than the "It's good to be here tonight in 'checks back of guitar' New Zealand!" lol, but to each his own. And they only do a new album every 5 years or so! So forgive their sets for being identical lol.

It's definitely not a genre or band for everyone tho, that's for sure lol.
Oh yea, new APC album in 2011 too, that will be an amazing year for me haha.

The thing with tool is they aren't really entertaining. they play in the dark and put some lights and visuals on. Once you've seen it once it's not worth seeing again. and their last two albums have sucked penis. big time.

musician: omar rodriguez-lopez (ok, two bands, but also movies and other collaborations :P)

You care about what the band looks like or something? Bet you enjoyed not seeing much of them in their music videos then eh. Doesn't mean the music videos aren't amazing though right?
Man I just reckon you can enjoy music for the sound, nothing else matters, strange eh.

The fact of the matter is they are some pale 'washed up looking' old white fulla's, who just so happen to be incredibly good at music.
Danny Carey's drumming is simply world class, his equipment and drum kit is revolutionary, he leads the industry on the sounds his instrument can produce and time stamps he can make fit in a song.

My mentality is I apreciate each chance I get to see people who have inspired me so much in my life in the flesh, I dont care if the sound is off on the day, I don't care what they wanted to say publically, I care about them taking the time out to come play on our tiny as hunk of earth.
I saw them crooked vultures for similar reasons, but mainly a Jon Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin thing.

Urgh.
Possibly the only thing worse than hearing someone wank on about Tool is hearing someone wank on about Led Zep.

I don't really care what a band looks like! I just don't want them to reproduce the exact same sound from their album at a concert I've spent 80+ bucks to go and see. Sure the effects and the music were good the first time, but a repeat the second time I saw them? That's just poor form. I felt the same way when Roger Waters came, played a bunch of songs exactly as they were from the albums then left the stage. Besides, they're not really "going out of their way" to come and play here either. they're doing it to make money.

All that said, if you haven't seen tool before, it's definitely best to do it at their own show rather than a festival. Going to a festival for a band which uses heaps of special effects just don't do their show justice.

Last concert I went to was rodrigo y gabriela, it was ace. Hate on that if you want, I don't care :D

I like Tool saw them 3 times now. Awesome each time. First Aenima tour other times Laturalus. So indeed I support your cause. One of my fav bands. Aenima is there best work I reckon. Still put it on every now and then. 3rd Eye, Pushit,

But the Mars Volta live! Woweeeee!

Fucking lets get Battles or Don Caballero over here. Bands or other great bands that record companies wouldn't dream sending over.

And Mountians of Murray need to get back together.

And bring Wesley Willis back from the dead.

And Ween need to come to Christchurch.  :P

Shot man, yeah TMV live did not disappoint

I felt bad that they had equipment issues during their sets and the sound was a little off... that was untill Eriatarka kicked in and I almost died of ecstasy, my fave one of theirs was hoping it would be in the set and it was lol. That song is such a trip.
Saw them at BDO too not at their own gig unfortunately :(

I think i've seen them four times now. The best I saw of them was definitely at the st james. that was fucking epic. Last time was at the events centre in greenlane. That was a shit show. Terrible acoustics, audience pissed the band off. wasn't a great atmosphere. Haven't seen them play anything from Octahedron, don't really want to either. Hopefully their next album is good otherwise I'll just be waiting for omar to do a solo show :<.

It's not that my computing hardware is inadequate for viewing images of the Graphic Interchange Format, but rather that in the year 2010, over 20 years after the specification and implementation of the GIF file type was made publicly visible, it's very hard to believe there is still a need for it.

Let's look at the so called "features" of the GIF spec...

* Image transparency: Supported in the PNG file format since 1994, implemented in IE7 (the last major player in the browser market which halted transparent PNG's success) in 2006.
* Animation: Oh, you mean videos? I think there's a site for that...
* File size and compression: Contrary to popular belief, this benefit doesn't come when you have a 10 second frame by frame video "implemented" in GIF

Someone might argue that there is enough of an overhead with encoding videos and calling the worst browser plugin on the planet just to view videos to make that an unappealing option, but modern browsers are continually making the push to HTML5 which includes native video and audio decoders, and really, SOMEONE is out there turning videos with actually watchable frames into the 256 colour mess that is a 4mb GIF file. There's the overhead.

What I'm trying to say, is that using this archaic excuse for a file format (which has forever been a web developers second worst nightmare since the advent of the internet) is detrimental to both the general internet populous and human reasoning.

Tell me then mr goodwin, from a business standpoint, why we should have to rely on youtube for all that we aim to do on our web pages?

What you fail to realize is that there IS a need for a .gif animation format, for these reasons:
- play inside a web browser (This is web design101)
- play on an OS right out of the box (This is microsoft graciously developing and adapting to the .gif format and making it run on all their OS's)
- play on a computer right out of the box (No codecs required, no media player required, just a browser or image viewer is fine)
- Infinite looping \ Set number of loops to play then stop.

If you expect an end user to be able to have codecs, web plugins and\or a decent media player on their computer, you have already over estimated them.
If you expect there isn't a need for animations etc to run right off your web site, without the need to link to somebody elses website which may or may not exist and offer the same functionality tomorrow, then you just don't have to think about web design much and should consider yourself lucky ;p

Not everyone can develop on flash yet.

Protip:
Best not to confuse one section of I.T with another. Artists shouldn't agree with web developers, and they shouldn't agree with networkers, and they shouldn't agree with programmers.
Best practice for each area is different, but there needs to also be ways to BRING EVERYTHING TOGETHER WITHOUT COMPATIBILITY ISSUES. Enter the .pdf document, the .gif animation, and the .avi video container and the .bmp still image.

I'm whiter than casper for a reason.

Is there a need for a small, low footprint animation standard ? Yes.
Should that standard have been defined in 1987 ? No.
Should that standard be used and abused so horribly that it attracts scorn from the people who create and maintain the very medium it lives on ? No.

While I agree that there is a need for what GIF represents, there's absolutely no reason why it should be GIF.
Title: Re: Want a solo Tool gig around BDO 2011?
Post by: Skullator on November 02, 2010, 11:46:15 AM
True, but remember that just because it was first designed in 87, doesn't mean that each microsoft OS since then hasn't completely overhauled the format.
Microsoft's monopolistic approach to the worlds computers helps define what a file extension can\can't do (Traditionally)
I can tell you that .gifs from 2010 will not run correctly on old OS's, and that gif's from today can do more than gif's from yesterday. Point there being the format itself isn't 'Doomed' or whatever, it can grow or adapt to the situation should the need arise, but the devs and powers that be need some clear direction on what's lacking before anything will happen.
Why fix what ain't broke? You'll break more stuff by doing so.

I don't like gifs much either, certainly not enough to defend them lol. Just killing some time at work..
