Title: Tournament for ticket to Aussie?
Post by: Rorooze on March 16, 2011, 10:30:55 PM
The opportunity for us to hold our own regional qualifier for OHN9 has recently come to light and we’d like to gauge interest in who would be keen to play in a high stakes tournament, where the winner gets a flight to Australia to compete at OHN9.
OHN9 will be similar to OH APAC where the winner will get a paid trip to compete at EVO 2011.

Now I’m keen to run a tournament for people interested in competing for a ticket to Aussie but only if the interest for such an event is here.

The cost to enter the tournament would roughly be the cost of a flight to Australia divided by the number of participants. Assuming a ticket price of around $400 then for a 8 man tournament it’d be a $50 dollar entry and for a 16 man tournament it’d be a $25 dollar entry. The top three players at the tournament would all get preferential seeding at the OHN9 event so if you get 2nd or 3rd and pay to get yourself there then you will still get a good seed.

The two games on offer would be MVC3 and SSF4 but admittedly I am sceptical that we could get the numbers/money to make both tournaments worthwhile.

If you are interested, could you please post your thoughts here so we can see if it is worthwhile putting something together. Also can you please do it sooner rather than later because we need to contact the OHN guys ASAP about what we're going to do. It’s a shame we didn’t know about this before First Blood but not much we can do about that now! We basically have to make a decision by Friday (and it is late Wednesday now). Chances are we'll make a decision whether we are going to bother with it tomorrow night.

Thanks

Rory

Note: If this does go ahead, it will most likely be played at one of our ranbats.

Keen for both, but honestly I would only enter SSF4 if there were 15 others keen for it.

Aw man, had a blast last year at this. Was a really intense tourney. Wish I didn't play Kevin in causals and one before hand only of get downloaded when we had our tourney matches. Can't make it this year saving for nationals instead.

At ranbats counts me out. Have fun, Auckland.

Also consider that the 'high stakes' entry for 16 people is only $5 more than the 'unspecified stake' of first blood entry!

Yes, but I know my only shot is through marvel. If there's heaps for ssf4 I'd probably enter though.

More QQ about Auckland. Seriously, you didn't even enter First Blood and that was on a Saturday. Can't please everyone, especially you.

When would you be planning to do the qualifier? I think it'd be better to do it as late as possible so we can all level up more. It's in the end of May. I guess winner would still have to pay a decent amount for accomodation, etc.

Also need to find out when my exams are or else entering the qualifier would be pointless.

At this stage we're probably looking at end of April.

Keen for both - obviously not so keen if it ends up being $100 to enter SSF4 though :P

Pretty even split between SSF4/MVC3 so far, about 6 each. Need at least 8+ imo.

Yeah, you could think of it as a donation really... but with a chance of being the recipient!

I may enter for the donation side but being it on a ranbats night would prove difficult.

Preparing to go over anyway so should be good :D

why not instead of having the ranbats on the friday night , that week have it on a saturday so everyone can come and enter so more entrants = less money for us to enter .

Post by: massi4h on March 17, 2011, 04:16:51 PM
Yeah, yeah. I don't mind paying $50 for mvc3 but I'm in the $25 box for SSF4. Can't afford $50 on a donation as I would put most of my practice time into mvc3.

^ This. It's not exactly the best in NZ if it's just Auckland.

Although, I imagine that the reason ranbats time was suggested though was because of venue hire and shit.

Ranbats was purely a suggestion, at this stage it appears to be the easiest because we already have all the gear and shit ready to go and it means we can minimise the cost of hiring setups, etc.

The alternative is to run it at our next team tournament that we are currently planning but we don't want a whole bunch of players entering one tournament and another bunch of players entering a different tournament for the same game on the same day.

There are a few other ideas I'd like to look at but given the time constraints I have to work with at the moment it's not worth pursuing those until I have a general feel for numbers keen for entering a tournament where the cost of entry is unknown but not going to be more than $50.

I'm not really keen on running it if we don't send anyone over, if that is the plan then we can just send one of our ranbats results to the OHN guys and if after that anyone wants to pay for their own flight then they can.

At this stage for SSF4 we've got andy, mason, mike, eru with Euan, Bill as maybes and for marvel we have mason, ben, smoof, bill, eru, stu.

2 days isn't exactly enough time to finalise time off or enough time to show a proper gauge of interest. I imagine niggas wouldn't wanna pay like $50 for a tournament where they don't even know if they can use the prize.
Title: Re: Tournament for ticket to Aussie?
Post by: Rorooze on March 22, 2011, 10:21:04 AM
Yeah it was short notice but I let you guys know as soon as I knew the opportunity was there, not everyone was keen for a $50 dollar entry and we didn't have 16 people to make it a $25 dollar entry. Let alone figuring out how to pay for the venue and other costs involved with the event.

Now we know the aussie guys are keen to organise stuff like this we can work with them for something next year!
Title: Re: Tournament for ticket to Aussie?
Post by: HoneyBadger on March 22, 2011, 10:48:06 AM
We could possibly organise something for SS... Maybe not a seed, but even a ticket is still good?
Title: Re: Tournament for ticket to Aussie?
Post by: [NIUE] BIRRY WONG on March 22, 2011, 11:57:00 AM
Yea its not until June. Theres certainly TIME. Trouble is we would still be significantly out of pocket with venue costs etc. Unless we charged about $30 per game. And thats assuming 2 full 16 man brackets. Would be worth it for the two guys that won, and I know there would be a lot of us keen to play for that prize. As long as the winners would be prepared to pay for their accomodation and entry to SS themselves, and we got two FULL 16 man brackets, I suppose it could be doable, but there are a few variables we need to heavily consider.

TBH I reckon we would get a full Marvel bracket since the competition is so close atm. And I think sending someone over for that could be doable. But a full super bracket might not go the distance. I can think of about 10 regulars who would probably look at it and say "Nah fuck paying $30 just to send Jack to Melbourne." Its a sad mentality that I think is pretty stink, but it exists unfortunately. Not everyone is as awesome as Richard and the U-man.

Never too early just to gauge interest. I'd enter ssf4 if we needed numbers

So if we were to run full 16 man brackets. Both brackets will only be rewarding first place right? I'd still enter both.

Basically, Im keen to run one, but it might not be financially viable for SSF4 unless we get some more interest.
