Title: Reaction Times
Post by: [8-----D] Toots on May 16, 2009, 11:17:27 AM
So I've come to the conclusion that my reaction times are balls but I wanna see how balls they are compared to the rest of NZism

http://www.gamefudge.com/Reaction-Time-Trainer

Post up your average time(s)

I'm averaging about 0.23 seconds...balls

Don't be shy now

0.211 on 2nd attempt

edit: Also, despite how it may seem, reaction times aren't really all that important in SF. Knowing the options an opponent has vs what your options are, and which ones he's likely to do is far more important.

Obviously knowing your options is important but if you can't execute the 'options' fast enough then those options aren't really options. For instance Chun li can Ultra Honda's standing roundhouse on block which is fairly important in hondas footsie game. If you can't ultra Honda's standing roundhouse on reaction then it is no longer an option and Honda can go back to harassing you with his s.rh

I think Justin Wong mentioned in the gootecks podcasts that he believed SF is 60% execution, 30% reactions and the rest mindgames. Not sure I agree but his game is heavily focused on his reactions (the man punishes chuns whiffed low foward with chuns SA 2 in 3s  :o) and you can't argue with his results.

yeah my reactions are good on sf4 but i need to work on punishing better, getting the most damaging combo in when i get an opurtunity, i sometimes just do stupid ones like sweep, and throw.

Agreed, we talk about this quite a bit now ;) I think remembering to correctly punish given opportunity is what is keeping me from really going nuts with Viper competitively I reckon. I know Ben and I have had discussion on this briefly in the past, it's well worth having a good chat over in person next time we meet up eh. :)

As for the Honda vs Chunli thing, even that is not all reaction time. If you know he's trying for st.RH, you look for it. It's no longer just a case of 'OH I blocked his kick, better do ultra', its 'I'm waiting for him to kick, there he goes, I'm blocking it, I ultra'. If you train it in training mode (and you KNOW justin wong does this), it just becomes muscle memory. Sure you still have to be able to do it in the first place, and I guess if you can't get it at all in training then you should either find a char that doesn't need to do that to beat Honda, or quit playing.

There are always other options. If your character demands too much execution skills for you, then find someone else.

BTW all these old guys (30+, 40+ year old players) are still top of the heap at games like ST, even though they don't have the reactions and whatnot they used to. It's because of the knowledge of the game. Justin isn't near the best at ST, despite his reactions.

I feel like an egg for posting it but...

:D

Anyways I agree with you for the most part. I sit in training mode practicing lots of things that involve using your reactions. For instance doing Ultra thru fireballs with Boxer. I can't do it consistently against the computer even when its the main thing I'm looking for. Something much more important is teching walk up throws and anti airing meaty cross-ups. I know I can stop meaty crossups (not on wakeup obviously) from Ryu by using boxers s.mp but instead I sit there going "oh shit I could have hit him...I think he's guna cross me up again so I'll hit then...oh shit now he's crossing me up again....and again"

Game knowledge owns reactions no doubt but if I can't anti air jump-ins, cross-ups and tech throws consistently I'm gona get owned by someone with a cross-up

Well, that's precisely the reason Boxer ain't all that in the JP tiers, he really has nothing against cross ups. Tech throws is a different matter I suppose, that's really just yomi though (I'm pretty shit at it, but you can blame a lot on online).

Sorry for bringing up this old topic lol -- just been digging around the forums

anyway, got 0.204 average with one 0.171

I don't think i've ever really had problems with reactions -- more just knowing what options I have and what to react WITH
