This is a really interesting read, since I sort of modelled this site off ozHadou... I hope I can make this site as successful as they have theirs!
So one of my goals would be to make next year's 'national tourney' span multiple games. Working out which games are worth running is a bit haphazard though I guess, the individual scenes for each game other than Tekken and SFIV are pretty small. Maybe BlazBlue will get enough of a following to make it worthwhile, but I'm not so sure.
It would also be great to be able to take either the top players of each game or the overall 'mvp' and send them off to ozHadou to try our hand against AU's best.
What would you guys like to see NZism heading towards/offering in the future?
HD Remix, should bring in alot of old-school players.
Fuck yeah Allan. We need to have an NZ evo like event!
Yeah With enough notice and advertising im sure you could run a big tourney with....
SF4
HD REMIX
TEKKEN 6 ( will be out on console soon)
MVC2
KOFXII
and maybe Blazeblue
With like 6 months or so to organise and advertise IM sure it would be awesome
TBH I reckon BlazBlue is going to end up bigger than KoFXII, but yeah MvC2 is a good idea.
I'll need to try to contact some bigwigs in Tekkenland, maybe we can sort something out between us for a national tourney...
No one outside Wellington plays 3S?
Not a fan of HDR as it's console based.
And I wouldn't count on Blazblue to take off that much. It definitely won't establish its own niche of players like other games have.
My 3 cents.

I don't think there's much of a 3s scene around anywhere else, and do you really think the 3s players from wellington would travel up to AKL to play 3s?

Everything is console based these days really.
QuoteAnd I wouldn't count on Blazblue to take off that much. It definitely won't establish its own niche of players like other games have.
Yeah, I didn't mean that it would be big enough to run a tourney for, I just think it'll be bigger than KoFXII. In other words, I really don't see very many people picking up KoFXII seriously. Even the people that like KoF don't seem particularly impressed with XII (myself included).
But hey, I don't like 3s either, so what do I know? :D
Yeah all those games I mention will be out on both 360 and ps3 within a month or 2 .
Except Blazeblue for 360 :(
I used to know a lot of high play Smash players. Still know quite a few but lots of them have split up into Brawl.
Could pay to do one of those maybe.
I would like to see 3S in there.
I would say Blazblue over KOF at the moment as well. I actually want to play KOFXII more but I agree that maybe not so many people are going to play it seriously yet.

Isn't there another tourney for Smash? I do think it would be a good idea to talk with them or something though, the larger our community gets, the more we can have other people trying new games 8)
Yeah there is a guy who runs ?yearly? smash tournies, might be possible to join efforts.
I'm fairly sure a few people from Welly, probably up to 5 or so would travel up for 3s, but probably no other game other than T6. I'd enter other tourneys just to make up numbers but not for serious.
Might be a bit sour playing console 3s though, however FBA or an arcade solves that.

The only reason I said KOF is that it will be out both on ps3 and 360 at the end of july so more people will pick it up compared to blazeblue which will only be out on ps3 (360 not till next year?) and also not avalible locally for purchase (unless through mighty ape) .
So yeah I think there will be more interest in KOF personnally because of it being avalible to everyone very soon compared to blazblue .
( which I want to play more than KOF I have to add)
God I can't wait for KoFXII.
I'd cruise up to Auckland for KoFXII and T6BR tourneys. I'd probably enter a SFIV tourney just for a laugh too.
T6 is crazy popular, might end up getting into it when it drops on console and the person that runs the smash tourneys at his place is Sambo, would be best to get in touch with him through GP forums.
Good interview, Starks interviews are allways good.

as far as I know console is perfectly fine for 3rd strike
if you were to organize a big event you would have to have
tekken BR
SF4
if you want to see people traveling these are gona be the major draws
tekken has the biggest scene in newzealand and people do travel for that i know every wellington player would travel to aucks if they had the money/time
for the most recent tekken tourny 6 went from welly had 1 hamiltonian and 2 from Christchurch attend plus the auckland regulars
maybes would include:
Marvel
3rd strike
blazblue (which will only be auckland players as far as i know)
HD remix
but i doubt many players would leave home for just these unless they also play tekken or sf4
Perfectly fine, maybe, the same as arcade, definitly not.
Thats enough of a difference tbh.
At yifans, arguably the most played game(s) is friggin Kof97-2002.
Blazblue has a growing crowd, but its nothing to write home about. Even when it gets a console release, i still dont think the community will grow too much.
When MVC2 drops on 360/ps3 i think would be the perfect time to do something to get that community buzzing. I would guess that it will get a hell of a lot of downloads, but it risks an early death. A marvel comp after say, 3 months would be enough to keep it alive, at least for a while.
At this point, SF4 and Tekken 6 are the only 'safe' bets. I think inevitably we would want some HD remix/marvel/3rd strike in there. (Though the 3rd strike crowd seem to be migrating to SF4) And the (early)Kof community would be a great one to reach out too, but the auckland based ones dont tend to speak a lot of english.
KofXII, at least at yifans, was dead before it even got started.
Im only speaking from an auckland perspective here. Its probably quite a lot different elsewhere. Im also biased towards marvel, but i would say my comments on it specifically are pretty sound.

Ps2 version is the closest to arcade perfect yet there is still a few differences. Main thing is that its a bit faster. There is also some damage and stun differences for instance Yangs rekkas do less stun damage.
did they make a ps2 version? lol
wat about the dc version?
DC version is crap apparently. Different speed and apparently it drops frames and shit.
Ps2 is tourney standard
DC version changes lots of things, no unblockables for a start, some horrible timing changes as well.
PS2 is basically arcade, but people will always complain about something.

:o :o :o
that explains some things
I'd play ps2 version but you spend all your time/money playing and practicing on one format, be nice too compete on it. However, as long as 3s was represented i'm sure a few people from here would come up for it.
Couldnt I or someone else just bring there pc and run the arcade rom through mame or ggpo ar kawaks and just plug 2 360 TE sticks in Like I do at home ?

Me too (>__<)""" need King Piccolo to set up 4 me....
Yeah Dave...lets play 98 UM bro is fun man.......while playin this waiting 4 2002UM hopefully they put it on Yifan too...
yeah man, i come down yifans either 2day or 2moro at lunch time
Haven't seen anyone except myself try the KOF12 machines in Yifans yet. But If there is a BlazBlue tournament I'll be in for it. Or Tekken 6 actually, had a go at it for the first time and it was pretty fun.
I wanna play Blazblue at Yifans but I don't wanna waste peoples' time by making them scrub me out ><
Most the people I saw playing it looked pretty new. That or they were just watching SFIV players and taking up the chair.. In which case I kindly asked they remove themselves from it. :D
I Hope this site gets more popular with South Islanders.
Get a south Island league happening. No comp here.
:'(
But the site has really exploded after playing Flux all those years ago on ggpo when it started up. (Go Alpha 2!)
Really cool to see a healthy thriving community in NZ with tourneys and practice sessions etc, even if it is north island so far.

To be fair it's all been SF4, without that we'd still be dead in the water. It's a shame there aren't more people from various regions around, it's basically only more Aucklanders. Hell we almost have more aussies than non-aucklanders. I don't really know how to reach more people :(
Has trying to communicate with the owners of Yifans helped? Setting up tournaments in there? (Excuse me if this has been passed about a hundred times before, hehe)

Start a T6 tournament, although I don't think anyone plays it in Hamilton, it's all sf4 here. Start a nzism tournament in the tron man.

I'm not in a geographical location which makes talking to Yifans people easy, however from what I understand they are basically completely uninterested in doing anything with us. As long as we go there to play their games I don't think they give much of a shit.

All SF4, hahahaha, you make it sound like there's a scene here.
I don't know anything about how many people in Hamilton play T6, I think there are a couple of serious players (presumably Jerry and someone else), but I believe there's a TZ T6 national tournament coming up soon anyway, so there's no point in me even offering to do that.
I might ask Steve if he wants to do monthly SFIV tournies though, no prizes and no entry fees, just for the thrill of MORTAL KOMBAAAAAT

Steve might be keen on that, provided everyone pays for there own games.
Jerry might be the only good player left in hamilton, steve said all the tekken players stopped playing when t6 came out. SF4 has a pretty large following (go in on thursday, 1pm->onwards is the best time (thursday is 1/2 price day on a new card).

I think it has a lot to do with other regions not having arcade SF4, and the difficulty in obtaining a decent stick here. Although a lot of say the 3s regulars in wellington have SF4 at home they don't have a stick and without one it's pretty much pointless, not to mention comp wise your limited to online play which is decent, but nothing like playing in the arcade.
Kinda left me feeling why stop playing 3s when I can go to the arcade and play it, when the only way to get SF4 comp is online. (Though generally the connections were great)
The only thing I could really think of to get things moving outside auckland and hamilton is if people had a bunch of sticks, consoles and screens and went to one persons place for a Valle RTSD type session, or Watson YJDK house thing. Gotta find t he people first though, but it seems like there is a bunch of new people here daily so I think the players are out there.
Shit if dudes are grinding up to G1, and G2 as uppercut everything Ken's they must want to get better atleast a little.
Anyhow, my 2c.
Yeah, the lack of SF4 arcade definitely doesn't help, but arcades are basically a moot point these days anyway.
I highly recommend doing gaming get-togethers though, met a lot of good dudes doing that kind of thing over the years. I obviously can't set that shit up for you guys though! :D
As for sticks, order some through playasia if you must, hori fs3s are back in, and new sticks are coming in every week atm.
Personally I have no problem training in SF4 online.

That's pretty much it right there. We had CVS2 at the arcade all the old schoolers played it and played it really well. When HD Remix and SF4 came out all those players play at home.
I don't blame them, I do as well.
What I am glad about is that SF4 is in two arcades in NZ. And am grateful that Yifans and Timezone paid all that money and had faith that people would be still into street fighter.
I really hope that the next version has a 2p on one board feature and comes out exclusively in the arcades first. More arcades would get Street Fighter, all the new blood would go to the arcades to play it before console release and the community would grow.
But I'm trailing a bit now. I think after this tourney things can only get bigger and better for the community. For the future? EVO NZ? Winners to US? Ooooooo who knows?

As flux said sticks are easy to get if you willing to spend the money ~150 if you relly want one youll get one
i own 7 sticks myself for various consoles
we have had a few tekken get togethers with a side of mvc2 and super turbo b4 but that hasnt been for a while
and on the note of g1 and g2
im only on 4800gp hardly ever play the points dont mean much really when people on 3 times my score are flow chart kens
I dont personally see championship mode as the way to improve though
fyi I have 2 sticks.
And no I think championship mode is terrible, but if these flowchart kens spend hours and hours grinding GP or whatever, they must want to learn the game a little.
Otherwise they are crazy for nerd points. (achievements/GP/whatever)
My 1 setup way out in karori probably is not a great start for any kinda SF4, 3s, HDR, ST, T5Dr and soon T6 get togethers though.
Also I don't like to think of arcades as a moot point. The arcade atmosphere is really a driving force for playing and a way for connecting and getting involved in the community. Plus, face to face communication is really the only worthwhile kind. Saying GGs via ingame mail will never compare to getting hype over stupid crap like demon's or scrub gun headbutts.
I definitly agree though, should work out some kind of way to get some live sf4 happening so other parts of the country have some motivation to come to AKL and support the only game with a legit scene atm.
I kinda feel like my posts are coming across as like super negative, fuck all of you etc, it's not the case whatsoever. Will be easier to talk about things over IRC, looking forward to it etc.

boringryu being on ps3 and a lack of chat makes a huge difference its still not the same as arcade but its a lot better than sitting there by yourself i generally dont like playing if there is no1 to chat i just get real angry

its just a matter of building a scene
me personnaly i enjoy meeting people almost more than playing
ive gone to a few tekken tournys and the things i remember the most are
getting starbucks and checking out the hot asians in auckland before the tourny
betting on whose gona win a match
going out for wierd/different food after
having some epic laughs especially when toothy yelled fuck that shit to the waiter
i barely remember the games besides close matches and rage when people lost
My problem with the tekken stuff is I CAN'T FIND ANY INFORMATION ON THEIR EVENTS
The threads on TZ are so horrible to sift through! If there's something I'm missing, please point me at the details so I can actually find out about this stuff and advertise it here!
Which TZ is this (if you can find info lol)? I might be keen to take a look. I'll show off my tekken 3 king chain grab which will get teched if I manage to grab them with it
The nationals are... yeah I don't know. Not sure if there are regional tourneys first and then winner goes to the nationals, or if there's just one big nationals, really not sure. Ask at your local I guess...
So far all I know is:
"the tz tourny is this year's national tourny - they are holding 2 rounds this time, the champion of each round (ie 2 of them) will get to fly to philipines later to participate in the timezone international t6 tourny"
Haha yeah TZ is hella hard to search through, and yeah Barnstorm, CptMunta and I when we played awhile back were using that little chatroom thing in ps3 but it's too hard to get out any communication without a keyboard so I just sit there raging.
Anyone else tried playing with headsets on PS3 before to find it was SUPER laggy even when playing someone literally in the same 1000 person town?
Cpt.Munta and I were discussing, we thought that Street Fighter the Movie the Game and Tattoo Warriors should be represented in a tournament. These past gems deserve to be played alongside the games of today, to show the amount of work had gone into the pure fun they bring to versus play.
I'd be more than happy to beat you all at SF:TM:TG.
Oh is that a challenge?
I can get real serious about SFTM:TG if need be, you better prepare yourself, warrior.
SFTMTG Toooo much fun. We couldn't stop cracking up at the awesomeness.
Yeah we were thinking of the ultimate casuals tourney for terrible/broken/obscure games
Someone draws the name of a terrible/obscure game out of a hat.
Everyone plays the awful game in the first bracket:
Winners bracket gets an even worse game selection to choose from.
Losers bracket gets some average better known game selection to choose from.
Top 8 play:
Tattoo Assassins (Everyone has a fart special move in this game)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiBM2XVym00
While dreams are free, even a great obscure fighting game tourney would rock. Having everyones favorite underdog fighters in a hat and everyone plays them.
Hahaha that would be funny as. Can we have SF2 rainbow? I've always wanted to play that
I remember playing this ps2 3d fighting game which everyone had supers and the mechanics didn't seem to bad. Then there is this guy called vermillion who wears a cape and has a gun. You pretty much lose cause he shoots you lol.
