Well I just got told about this event by a mate in Auckland. Sadly, I won't be able to make it but I hope one of you guys take this tourney out! It could be a good chance to get some of the old school guys into the NZism scene too :) Well anyways, here are the details:

I was the one who told Nick about this one. I played the last one of these. Throw loops are fine. The sticks are MCA joysticks on original arcade cabinet which will be linked to some plasma screens in the club so people can spectate easier (50+ people trying to look over your shoulder gets awkward).
Last winner was a Chun-Li player who played Blanka player in final. Other two in top4 were Ken and Guile players. Defnitely think theres room for a good Dhalsim/Sagat/Ryu player to do well, if last time was anything to go by, the field will be flooded with Ken players and the odd Guile.

Hi guys Ive just signed up cause I heard some of yous are keen to enter hyper battle feb 16, we had one last year & competition was very close even Ben Lummis repped welli & made it to the quarter finals.
Ive decided to run another one this year due to huge interest from the last battle & also celebrating hypers 20th anniversary.
we have the official stages & yiphans champs entering from the early 90's, even some that lost in the finals are keen to revenge their lost 18 years ago... lol
Alot of us oldskool gamers still jamm hyper cause we own our own arcade machines & have not made the transition to super sf4 lol.
I had the honour last year to play super sf4 3d at the xbox microsoft convention at the grand sky city, was unreal playing with 3d glasses hehehe.
Would love to see some of yous entering the battle as some of these guys are world class, see yous feb 16...

You'll probably find the majority of guys playing aside from the NZism crew won't use GGPO, having learned exclusively from playing on arcade machines. That being said, there will be a fair few guys who own their own HF machines. In any event, I'm sure there will be both NZism and non-NZism players who will do well.

Yes, this is fine. Using your example, winner stays Honda and you can pick Ryu.

He means that we think they're all pushovers and vice versa basically. My original view was that there would be lots of people who can do fireball traps and anti airs and that was about it, while more of us study videos and watch pros and maybe even look at hitboxes and learn frame data. And alot of the NZism players are also just as old school as them, but actually I do think alot of these non NZism guys know what they're doing and they all play eachother in high level play.

Fono was a guy used to play alot round Mangere near the end of the 90's, and alot in town early 2000's. I met him at uni, and he was probably the best HF player I had ever played. Taught me how to play it way back when.

Don't underestimate these guys. I've been told how good some of these guys are by CoMa and I definitely believe him when he says that they're good. CoMa and I went to Yifans (before I knew about NZism) in 08 and well he smoke my Gief with Ryu many times in a row.... What's worse is that I later found out that fierce punch wasn't even working when we were taking rounds against the cpu.
Sure I've leveled up since then but the chances are CoMa has too. And for him to say that these are guys are better than himself is a sign that some of these old school guys can play. I've also given CoMa a heads up as to which guys to look out for since I feel that we too are being underestimated. Too bad that half of the HF players aren't even going lol

Saw Fono on the train couple of months ago, said he never plays anymore except for if he goes to buy fish n chips after I told him about the last one of these...but people like him don't take long to get back into it.

Scribe played the ST cab at work when he was recording one day.. it was only a few weeks after we got it and i never ended up having
free time to play him but i watched him play one round.. he seemed good but my idea of good may have drastically changed since then.
Karl Stevens (ex-singer from supergroove) told me him and Che-Fu used to live on HF. He said one fish and chip shop let them both stay the night
in there so they could play until they opened again the next day. LOL. I wanted to play Karl but again too busy recording..
I think he said Che started playing SF4 but it was a while ago so i can't remember..

wish i could figure out this ggpo stuff a bit to confusing for me changing ports roms ect wtf would love to play online nzism guys might be right about easily beating the old skool guys cause most of us havent even picked up a joystick in ten years a bit of fun but i guess the scene was a lot diffrent then arcade only and no vids and very little hitbox and frame data info but some of us did put the time and effort to learn the game properly i think the best thing about the old days is you could always get a money match down yifans with the asians and they were bloody usless and the worse thing was if you threw the wrong person to much they would try to beat you up lol so the risk reward scenario was greater i still have fun playing ssf4 online every now and again anint that good but i can beat some people with my dan and watch them rage.

the only reason i wanted to know about was for hyper fight practice had a few games yesterday omg my timing is terrible i am pressing buttons late and dropin combos like crazy even found myself tryin to use lk+lp to throw lol bloody funny but smoked all my mates anyway and they all claimed to be legends at the game might give it another go down yifans monday or tuesday anyone keen for a jam

OK there were 36 people. First round Ben and Dave played and Ben won. Bill lost with his awesome Balrog. Sol lost to a Blanka, he got like a perfect or near perfect in the first round, then in the second game he was 1 round up and lost it. Me and Simon both won our first games. Second round Ben won, I won, Simon lost to ThomasFoster.
Now we're top 8. I lost to Stafford (some guy who I clearly remember his face from 10+ years ago at yifans) and Ben won his game. I had to go, but Rory told me Ben lost in top 4.
Oh well it went alright I guess. I'm quite sad about the setup, the buttons were fine the stick was alright but it was side by side shoulder to shoulder and I couldn't get enough room to hold the stick properly. So many tiger knees instead of meaty tiger shots, etc. But na I got pretty used to it and the OG players were comfortable.
Had a good time though thanks DJ Reminisce/Blade for the comp. See you all next year if it happens again. $720 is nothing to laugh at.

Yeah lost to the guys Blanka. To be fair he was playing much better than me. I kept throwing stupid fireballs and he'd jump over and punish. Or I'd go for a meaty fireball on his wakeup and then get a jab and then do a fireball after and he'd jump and punish.

Stafford is top notch, it was unfortunate he and David had to play off for the last spot in the top4, tbh they both deserved to be there. Can't take anything away from David, he pretty much had the toughest run out of anyone considering he got paired against the winner of the last tourny in the first round then had to go through Thomas F and Stafford among others.

No, I think it is fine that you agree with other people that the tournament should be double elimination; but surely as someone who has run a tournament before you would understand that when you only have finite resources you can only do so much before the resources you have are exhausted.

IMHO, single elimination was the most practical format in this instance. Given the six months between now and the proposed Nationals, I am hopeful that a double elimination format can be implemented for it. It is reasonable to expect that this will require a greater time commitment from both officials and players . However, it will be better for players as opposed to 'one & done'.
I am quite sure that with the right planning and promotion, this will be a very successful and enjoyable event for all involved. This is especially applicable for all the people who for one reason or another weren't able to compete this time around.

Actually I kinda liked the single elim. It meant that if someone got beat you didn't have to worry about them anymore. ;D

Let us know when you plan on running it blade. Like I said at th end of that night, we can run it on XBOX360 and split the video output between lagless monitors and the big screens. We all have experience running double elim brackets, and can bring software to make it easy.
Can rustle together dome Old Skool MCA sticks for all the OG's pretty easy and rock that shit hard.

we have one on March 12 but it's not hyper fighting because our last HF tournament didn't have much interest. We also jam SSF4 and MVC3 every second friday and on occasion some of the older games come out.

Normally we have it at Giga internet cafe up on wellesley street. But I don't think that that particular venue would work for the crowd that was there on the night. I thought the venue was actually really good for the game. Felt like I was in a dingy arcade watching a bunch of the boys going hard.
When we spoke about our NZism Fighting Game Nationals, that is an entirely different event. We haven't actually pinned down what games we will be having at that event, and I guess Hyper Fighting could definitely be one of them. We had tried a Hyper Fighting Tournament at one of our previous tournaments, but the turnout wasn't very good. When we saw how you managed to pull 30 something odd people into that place for Hyper Fighting, we definitely think there could be some value in it for Nationals.
I guess what I'm saying is that if you plan on doing anything like this in the future let us know. We can help with equipment etc to help you run it smoothly, and in turn by helping you out, we get our site out to more people and grow our community.
