Title: The King Of Fighters
Post by: gl3nnium on April 12, 2011, 01:55:44 PM
Hey Everyone. Im new to NZism but im psyched to find a place for NZ Fight Gamers. I try to catch up with all the new realases but I also spend alot of time searching for arcade fighters that most people never heard of.... I use mame and romnation.net alot to get and play all the great 2d fighters. There are so many and some real lost gems...some great unknown fighters that fans really should try like 'Garou - Mark of the Wolves, Daraku Tenshi and some really comical ones like 'Waku Waku 7" and 'Tattooed Assassins'
Im currently playing Marvel vs Capcom on mame and MVC2 on xbla. I have a real soft spot for The King Of Fighters series and although SNK really lets us down with 12 I still play it and enjoy it...The mame versions are great, you can download KOF 94 thru to 2002 for mame and if there are other KOF fans out there id love to hear from them. if anyone wants to play KOF 12 or SF4 on XBL im up to the challege...my gamertag is gl3nnium.

Anyway great to find this place..i live in Christchurch so after the quake theres not much else to do so im getting really good at MVC2

Thats another one for the christchurch crew. Should catchup for a few games on XBL or Timezone ricc mall. We got our own subforum if you scroll a bit further down on the forum index. Welcome to the forum

I didn't know Ricc mall had a timezone!!! i know theres one at northlands..What machines do they have? The fish and chip shop in my old neighbourhood had an original Marvel vs Capcom machine so id prctice on mame before headin down the road and play the actual machine..altho the final boss still kicked my ass more often than not....

Get ggpo man, and most of those games can be played online. I'd be keen to play you at any of the mvc series on there. Netcode is really good.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: gl3nnium on April 12, 2011, 04:26:59 PM
Holy Crap..I didnt even kno ggpo existed. till now ive done my playing on mame or xbl or in arcade..saw the download links. im not sure how you could set up a rom to play online like that..hell if someones managed that then awesome. I can finally unleash my SF Alpha and KOF moves (actually i suck at the Street Fighter Alphas..better at MVC, Xmen vs street fighter etc..thanks for that.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: massi4h on April 12, 2011, 04:54:34 PM
Well we're not meant to be speaking of roms so I won't link you, but you need to find the right roms for GGPO (google it, there's even a torrent available) and there's heaps of games.

Once you set it up, go here: http://nzism.alphaism.com/forum/index.php/topic,605.msg63177.html#new
to ask guys for games and shit. I'm free most days if you wanna jam xmen vs street fighter for a bit.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: gl3nnium on April 12, 2011, 05:47:05 PM
Thanks for that ill check it out tonight..i didn't know that Roms was a touchy subject...I usually buy the games I want to play but sometimes the only way you can play something is from a rom...(like xmen vs streetfighter) cause the arcades dont have them anymore or no console ever ported them...games like streetfighter Alpha 3 would have been dead and lost if it wasnt for roms. Since playing the streetfighter games on roms i bought heaps of streetfighter stuff for consoles. anyway im psyched about this ggpo thing so ill be seeing if i can set it up tonight.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: massi4h on April 12, 2011, 06:06:25 PM
Xmen vs Street Fighter for Sega Saturn yeah lol. But technically, it's only legal to own a rom of something if you actually own it. IE, you'd need the arcade board.

I think there's a rule for roms (all consoles and stuff) that says you're legally allowed to own a rom of something for 1 day for testing purposes then you must delete it, which is why all those rom sites are still running. But yeah pretty touchy subject.

Yes ricc mall has timezone. Its outside though, beside coffee culture. They have 2 Tekken 6 cabs, Vanilla SF4 and a mame cabinet with a huge selection of CPS1, CPS2 and Neo geo games. Its pretty shitty though, has frame rate issues. Anyway seems like this thread is derailing from its topic so take anymore questions about the christchurch scene here.

Welcome bro, GGPO is pretty much a must if you're an Fighting game enthusiast. I'm keen on playing anything but HF and ST are the only game I'm semi-decent at  :D KOF98 is the most popular game although I'm not too sure how many NZ players you'll find there. I see that you're more into the VS series so are you playing MVC3 atm? A group of us in Chch usually gather every Thursday to mainly play MVC3/SSF4 but every once in a while we play other games too  ;)
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: CptMunta on April 12, 2011, 07:31:26 PM
^ Yeah we get together every Thursday for mashups and play SSF4 and MvC3 but I'm always keen to ply lesser known games. We usually hook the laptop to an LCD monitor or TV or use Horst's Dreamcast to play JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Capcom vs SNK 2, 3rd Strike.

I'm keen to play a bit of KOF after playing KOF13 and 98 when I was overseas. Flick us a private message and we'll hook you up with the details if you are keen.

Post by: gl3nnium on April 12, 2011, 08:44:47 PM
Actually yeah i play a bit of SF 3rd strike on xbox 360 (streetfighter anniversary for xbox works fine on the 360)..I heard that there was a tournament here recently with 3rd strike in it but it was for the ps2 version or something) yup i like KOF but i play everything...Dead or Alive series, Virtua Fighter Series, Mortal Kombat (especially 1, 2 and 3), Soul Calibur series etc... Including roms i must own well over 120 fighter games..some are crap like 'Blandia' and some are great like soul calibur 4.....has anyone here ever played the Samurai Showdown series? Its pretty fun.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: CptMunta on April 12, 2011, 09:19:50 PM
Yeah we had a 3rd Strike tourney last yeah we all got owned by chuck from Wellington.

We should be having this conversation over in the CHCH thread since we've moved beyond KOF now.

http://nzism.alphaism.com/forum/index.php/board,7.0.html

I think we have a KOF 13 thread around here somewhere since it's at Yifan's in Auckland. Man I hope it somehow makes it to console or PC.

This is the last off-topic (from KOF) post but for a good reason. I'm a member of the 'mugen infantry' site.
Mugen is a fighting engine available to anyone who wants to build their own professional 2d fighters. Mugen infantry is a collection of people who build and play their own fighters. They are usually of retail quality and totally free. Most of the games are based on dream match-ups that fans always wanted to see but never happened..like streetfighter vs mortal kombat, Dc vs Marvel etc...if anyone is interested im thinking of starting a mugen thread here..there are some amazing mugen titles out thee and they are free . because they are made by fans theres no issue about roms or copyright...anywy just thought id bring it up if anyone is interested.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: CptMunta on April 13, 2011, 01:27:44 PM
Maybe start a mugen thread. I dabbled in Mugen aaaaages ago, Put together my own game (almost like a fighting game mix tape) and started making my own Alex Kidd character. Was pretty silly fun :) My favorite mugen creation was that street fighter 1 remake.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: massi4h on April 13, 2011, 01:28:48 PM
Mugen engine is amazing. I was just put off it a few years back when a friend gave it to me and half the characters were like a whale who kills you by entering the stage and stupid things like that. But by all means start a thread. Would be nice to see some interest in it. Btw dude do you have a stick or do you play with keyboard?
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: gl3nnium on April 13, 2011, 02:49:28 PM
ok will start a mugen thread..there are some new mugen titles that absolutely kill some of the SNK and Capcom stuff..its become very professional.....Id love an arcade stick like x-arcade or something but at the moment i just plug a corded Xbox 360 controller into my pc (which is almost better anyway)..you can download a simple patch from microsoft so you can run your 360 controller...i dont think i could use a keyboard for fighting anyway. All mame roms and mugen fighters have full controler support.. some even  have vibration feedback.

Its a terrible terrible movie.  The Girl who plays Mai is Maggie Q, of whom I would smang any day of the week.  But even she couldn't save this movie for me.

Some movies are so bad that they are good, but this can't even fall into that category.

Yeah..all you guys are right...I just finished watching it and I feel like i just lost 2 hours of my life.

Kyo Kusanagi is a white american guy - what the fuck!
Terry bogard, shit did they even play the game, nothing like him - what the fuck!
Shit acting (except for mai) - what the fuck!
Mature and Vice were a full on lesbian couple - What the fuck! (Actually I kinda liked that part)
For some reason the dvd also had a game of chicks playing American Football in lingerie - what the fuck! (actually i didnt mind that )

All your warnings came too late for me..I was watching the movie at the time.....dont watch this movie for any reason. I'm a KOF fan and even I thought it sucked.

Is there a rule on Live Action Fighting Game movies being bad?

Recent Tekken was shit. Chun Li was shit. DOA was shit (though it was better than the previous two). All the older movies are good for a laugh.

How would a live action MvC movie go?
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: maelgrim on April 28, 2011, 08:25:44 AM
The best I have seen is the first Mortal Kombat film - which I thought was crap at the time, but now can be held up as a masterpiece next to all the more recent efforts.
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: gl3nnium on April 28, 2011, 08:43:39 AM
Agreed. Mortal Kombat is still the best fighting game movie, Which aint saying much. I saw the tekken movie there too but after 'the king of fighters' movie im too afraid to watch it.

Jean Claude Van Damme Street Fighter the Movie is the best fighting game movie.  Ever.  Mortal Kombat comes next

I have the SF van damme flick on VHS  8)

best fighting games movie is sf animated movie imo.

The best thing about the Street Fighter movie is RAUL FUCKING JULIA. They shouldve retconned actual Bison in favour of his portrayal imo. I would love to see a fight between Raul Julia's bison, ANd Christopher Lambert's Raiden.

But nah. OG Mortal Kombat movie fucking rules. The sequel does NOT.

I have the game of the Street fighter movie on mame. It kinda weird. Its a street fighter game but they scanned images of the real actors so it almost feels like your playing mortal Kombat.....Kylie Minogue is Cammy...not the best game but i still get a kick outta it.
Nothing to do with KOF but still interesting.

ha ha your right orochi..we got talking about the KOF movie and it sorta lead to here...it happens..but i do have a KOF question. Why is 98 considered the best KOF by so many people?..i like em all (even 12 and youve really gotta be a fan to like 12)
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters
Post by: Orochi on May 07, 2011, 10:52:44 AM
depends on where you are really, 97, 98 and 2002 are well considered to be the true classics, i love 2002 myself.

i own every single kof game, including kof kyo on psx, i bought both PS3 and 360 versions of kof12...

If i'm ever back home to chch this year, i'll send you a message for some kof battles, otherwise i can only really play on xbl 98um and 2002um

EDIT: didn't read your post properly... i never really thought about it, maybe it's the most balanced? i always tend to do unblockable projectiles in 98 though...

sweet that wud be awesome....i started another thread here called mugen infantry...i put a link in it to a game called SVC ulrimate mugen....its the only game i know of where you can have KOF vs Guilty Gear/blaz vs streetfigher vs world fighters etc etc etc..its huge. As a KOF fan i got a kick outta kicking some guilty gear ass with terry bogard.

I was into Mugen about 6-7 years back... maybe more maybe less, lost interest in it a long time ago, it got real annoying to find actual good creations amongst the garbage.

Also, it just looks shit having different sprites fight each other...

I was playing SvC Ultimate just now and I saw something I totaly missed before....Theres a New Zealand flag in this level from King of Fighters 2003...i took this screenie.

Best stick you can buy without custom building one yourself. On special at playtech for $199 atm. Really REALLY good deal. Youll need to DL the drivers for an xbox controller for it to work on PC, but thats no biggie. Not cheap, but you get what youre paying for.

Yeah x arcade is really bad compared to what you can get for a similar price. I brought one for my first stick and I wish I hadnt  :-[

If you are not looking to spend much then i would get this namco stick and this converter to let you play on pc and ps3

Hell thats not a bad idea...that arcade stick has a streetfighter layout too....I dont own a ps3 (i play on xbox 360) but the converter was pc compatible so that might be a winner!
One thing tho...the arcade stick is PS1 vintage and the converter is for PS2 to usb ....i didnt thing ps1 and ps2 controllers were interchangable. Does anyone know if ps1 and ps2 controllers are the same?? I know people get pissed off when a thread goes off subject but this is importan cause if it will work them im buying it!
Title: Re: The King Of Fighters

yeah the namco sticks are compatible with pretty much any ps2 to ps3 pc converter. I wont say that it will 100% work with that particular converter but from my experience every ps2 to ps3 pc converter has worked with my namco stick.

you might wanna ask whether its in working condition before buying it. Those sticks are tanks but they are old

Thanks heaps....well i figure if its only 20 bucks i may as well buy it regardless...the only thing with that stick is the three button layout which is great for SF but not so much for KOF......but it will be awesome for MVC And SFA3.

Keeping it KOF....I think ive fond a glitch in King of fighters 2000 (arcade version on mame).....on stages one to three ive found that all you need to do is inflict a little damage then retreat to the right side of the screen. as long as you dont move or attack your opponent wont do anything but stand there....you just let the clock run down and you automatically win...all three opponents do this no matter who they are. Finding that out kinda spoils KOF 2000 for me a little.

Has anyone else here found this?

Yeah i liked the look of 12..but its very stripped down - not enough modes in single player just a 5 fight time trial.
I still like it even though its basic..the core of it is ok ... its pretty much 'Diet King of Fighters' still enjoyable but SNK dropped the ball on KOF 12.
If you find out which KOF that glitch was in Munta let me know! The 2000 glitch i found doesnt happen every time but it happens alot. Mite start playing 94 for a while for a bit of nostalgia.
