Title: Street Fighter IV Nationals August 09
Post by: CrazyMobius on August 15, 2009, 08:18:51 PM
Sorry if there is another thread on this one but thought it would be cool to start fresh.

Firstly thanks so much for Alan Lenny Andy and RVB. Awesome, awesome day. Congrats to Simon for taking the title. Mean Sagat.

Good to put a face to some of the names I've met online, Cpt Munta, Coffindrop, Weazy, Ericson, Skullator to name a few. Also good to catch up with the ol school regulars.

Sux that I got put up against James twice! But them the breaks. -_-.

Can't wait to see the matches uploaded on youtube or something and here the post tournament evaluations!

Awesome stuff!

Yeah bro, fully thanks to Alan, Lenny and Andy for the awesome as day. You guys really made a kick ass event today.

Chrissie and I are looking / working through the footage now, should be up soon.

Great to put names to faces: Skullator, Coffindrop, Ericson, Pjai, Techhit, Eru, and many others, and of course my bro from the deep south CptMunta!

Props to Kevin, Simon, Ben and Andy for some intense battles in the finals. Awesome shit.

Best match for me:

Simon (Crazymobius) Dhalsim VS Matt (lightweight) Honda

EPIC YIFANS GRUDGE MATCH

Will post here with the youtube links for you all to look over and be amazed. It's be great to see the standings/rankings from the day too!

Nice to meet everyone

CptMunta, Weazy, CrazyMobius, Taiboas, Lenny, Hydro_jm, etc.

Couldn't play to save my life.  Serves me right for not playing enough!  But enjoyed the event nonetheless.

Congrats on everybody that came to the event.  It was hype! :D

As everybody else has said it was really awesome to put the faces to the usernames on the forum.  Good to see  kingpicollo, zosla, xPunch, gankatron and jack, dvs, crazymobius, ill bill, primo, electric (abel stick for the win), lightweight, gunsmoke, coffindrop, Hue, tech hit, weazzyefff, geneterror, cpt munta, code and so much more!  Good to see some familiar faces, gino, fluxcore, iMagneto, B1ackstar Ninja, smoof, Lennysaurs, massi4h, hydrokinesis, skullator, Devilstar, simonfish.

Wish I had time to chat to everybody that went because you guys are what keep the community alive.  Good games to everybody who had participated in the tournament.

I'm so fucking tired from holding my krusty little camera recording matches all day.  With the matches we have filmed I will try to get them edited and up on youtube for all you guys to see.

Was an awesome, awesome day.

Big ups to our judges who put in a massive effort.

Big ups to the sponsors that dropped all; the phat loot for us.

Big ups to the community for fucking showing up and contributing to the largest fighting game tourney I have ever seen in NZ.

Simonfish grats mate you deserved it!  You didnt get it given to you easily, as you plowed through some tough matches.

To the rest of you!  No time to rest on your laurels.  Get yourself a partner and start training!   Watch this space!  Doubles tourneys coming soon!

Be ready!

Wow, thanks so much everyone for coming, all up there were 47 entrants, so it was actually really close to the number I was expecting.

Huge thanks to RvB, time and time again they provide such a great venue and service, and were really understanding even though we went a bit over the time by which we had to be out of there. Also for sorting out the pre-release Tekken 6 setup, which I never even got to see, but I hear it was there! Anyone from here get to try it out?

Thanks to the sponsors, Monaco (NZ importers of Capcom games and some other stuff, for many games and figurines), GIGA internet cafe (for the 2nd place prize stick plus lots more), Buttonmasher.co.nz (for some really sweet games), and Mark One comics & games Hamilton (for giving me a good price on the comics).

Thanks Toomeke and Geneterror for helping out with the 1st prize stick and artwork, your contributions are very much appreciated (and will be compensated for of course :))

Huge thanks to the judges for volunteering, I know it meant you sometimes missed seeing some big matches, and perhaps didn't have quite the opportunity to think about your own games as much.

Super thanks to Lenny and Andy, my right and left hands, couldn't have done it without you guys.

And of course the biggest thanks to everyone that entered! There's no event without you, and this really made me feel like all the effort our community has put into all of this has paid off. It's been a long hard road for NZism, so it's really great to have such an awesome turnout and competition. You should all be really proud of yourselves for stepping up and competing, and I hope to see all you at future events!

BTW all comments and feedback is appreciated!

Without further ado, here are the results (in chronological order):

What a DAY!!! I was really tired lol was glad that I didn't fall right over!!!

Thanks too all the participated :) Alan And Lenny + Judges did a well done Job, without you guys I can't of gone through this huge tournament organizing everything myself again...

I am amazed on the overall skill level improvement for all players since the last tournament!!! you guys must of trained 24/7 -.-
Keep it up!!!

some corrections I've notice on my game, first game vs the guileguy was 2-0 to him
second game with the guileguy was 1-2 to me, used sagat first game and Ryu for the last two.

Losers bracket vs James(Hydro) was 2-1 to me.

Thanks again to Lenny the taxisaurs for taking me everywhere!  Sorry for paying you via locking your keys in the boot >_<  and thanks Euan for the AA assist.  YOU WIN! :D

Can't wait to see you guys over here in my turf.  Ioane, gonna hit you up for some interstate battles once I get me a PS3. :D  Also Marc, cannot wait to see the mad vid you will be making.  Should be sweet.  I hope you guys have a mad gaming session over a long weekend period, I'll be mad keen to fly back for that.

Chur to the NZism crew for holding this, was sick. Some crazy matches going down all day, Id have to say any match that Hydro played it was sick to watch aswell as mobius vs lightwight (HONDA!!!). Nerves got the best of me in both my tournament games, sucked hard but I do need to brush up on some shit. Hopefully I can make it out to one of the SF gatherings you guys hold.

When will the team tournament details be announced? Mad keens for that, thats if anyone wants to team with me HAHA :P

GGs everyone! Wish I had played some more casual matches against everyone!
Ill_Bill, Add me on xbla! "GinoL". I'll show you the power of the jungle.
Devilstar: the couple of causual matches we played were great!
iMagneto: I don't even think we got a single game together this time. Whats with that?!
Cr8zyK1LL3r: Your ryu took me out clean. Nice work!

to everyone else ggs! Too many to mention!

Thanks Fluxcore and all the admins for running the tournament. It was fun !! It's a pity that Lenny and Alan couldn't join us and that's why we all went to giga to have some games with you guys even though we were exhausted (I was, i only had a coffee in the morning when Andy came to my place then we took off for the tournament, and i couldn't leave until the tournament is over because I was not allowed to see when is my match, lol).

I was hoping to show people my Ryu but I didn't expect that I had to use a different stick in the tournament so I was playing a non-combo Rush-down Ryu for over half the tournament. I was glad that I could use my stick again in the last 4 matches and didn't scare to do combo or ultra anymore. hehe... Otherwises I could have lost to Gino/Ioane or even the Brothers.

Imagneto: We had a really close match and you were destroying me in the first game. Good to fight you Mike.

Hydrokinesis : Good match we had there man. Your C.viper has improved a lot after that defeat u took 3 months ago. I guess your 5 hours/day training has been paid off compared to me got hooked into computer games all day LOL. But seriously, you deserved the win man. Your zoning with C.Viper has improved a lot. Now, I hope you won't skip my challenge on PSN anymore. I wanna try again someday ^_^

Ioane : I didn't expect you to use Ken against me. I was shaking when i thought i had to fight against your fei long. Your Ken kara throw keep getting at me like i was a scrub lol. And I didn't know how to counter it. I think you could have won if you use your fei-long.

Gino : I guess Ryu had advantages over Blanka and I could tell that match was pretty hard for you. You took the 4th round with a cross up ultra, that was awesome man. The moment i saw you used ultra I thought: "Ahhh, I expected that, I just need to block low then high now and he will be a dead meat" But then Your ultra did a cross-up and hit my Ryu from behind. I was like :"WTF, Is this even possible ??" Lol... I guess i really need more experience against different match-up.

Toomeke : You did really well in this tournament Ben, you took out a lot of players and made a very few mistakes compared to us. And Kevin was the only person that you lost but everyone could tell that "balrog vs zangief" is a very bad match up for balrog. I couldn't do anything against your Balrog and you were reading my Ryu like a book. You made it to 3rd place in this tournament. Well done Ben !! ^_^

There is just 1 little thing that i'm a bit confused. I'm just wondering what's my ranking in this tournament. As for the top 8 matches, I got 1 win from Gino and lost to Ben while Richard lost to andy (later on Andy lost to Ben and came 4th). So I'm just a bit confused that how come Richard got 5th place and I didn't have a chance to fight against his awesome Guile. (well, we've fought a lot in yifans but tournament pressure is much more fun :D)

Phew..... I finally finished this long essay. lol Now It's time for me to take a step back from SF4.

All good Hue, thanks for the props bro. I hope you didn't take my "THAT'S WHAT YOU GET!!!!!!" comment tooooo much to heart just after our matches, There was a ton of hype around you and I facing off and it was something that really just flew outta my mouth in the heat of victory. Your's was definitely the game of the day for me, and I had been preparing alot the week before to face you on the day. (didn't want to give anything away, so that's why I skipped the invites ;)) Call me paranoid, but I didn't want to jinx my mindset by getting my ass kicked by you just before the tourney. I'm sure we'll have many MANY more matches to look forward to soon.

I hope you'll be in the team tourney too.

Oh yeah the standings, I think You, Gino and I got 8th equal, not sure how richard ended up above us, So the standings would be:

1st:            Simon - Sagat
2nd:           Kevin - Gief
3rd:            Ben - Boxer
4th:            Andy - Ryu / Sagat
5th:            Richard - Guile
8th equal:   Gino - Blanka / Hue - Ryu / James - C.Viper

But I'm not too sure on that, it's difficult to rank anyone after 4th place in a double elim tourney. Keen to see the official results too!

er... don't tell me... those were counted. I thought you were helping me testing out my stick before i use it in the tournament. Do you really think I would eat 5-6 uppercut in a row in a real match? And I didn't even use high punch, high kick, no high damage combo, ultra, ex..... i was trying to see if there is any delays like Andy said when he tested it out so i kept walking forward to jab and u kept uppercut me away. 5 wins in a row without losing a single round. I'm sure even simon's sagat will have problem doing that.

5th:            Richard - Guile
8th equal:   Gino - Blanka / Hue - Ryu / James - C.Viper

Now that you mentioned it. I think I should be 5th. since 5th place = 1 win (and i got a win from Gino match) and 8th place = No win (Richard, Gino, James). I'm not so sure though. maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah I think you did get 5th equal.
I did notice during all your matches you were doing more rushdown than combos, was kinda suprised by that myself. That ultra was 100% fluke. I didn't even know why I did that tbh, lol!
Still, I'll be more prepared next time!

Let me guess , wake-up ultra while hue was crossing up, classic blanca steez.

Yeah if lenny can send me the tourney bracket file when he gets a chance that'd be great - I think the one called test4 was the latest one.

As for the placings, iirc it was:
1st:            Simon - Sagat
2nd:            Kevin - Gief
3rd:            Ben - Boxer
4th:            Andy - Ryu / Sagat
5th equal:      Richard - Guile / Hue - Ryu
7th equal:   Gino - Blanka / James - C.Viper

That's just the way they turn out with an elimination bracket, lots of equal placings.

HTH

I'm not sure what you mean by "no win", but I won a game vs Andy in our matches. Other wise I'm not sure what you meant bro.

I was talking about top 8 games.
1 win = 1 match.
No win = 0 match. (if u win 3 rounds and lose the match (final score = 1-2), it still doesn't counted as a win for you even if you get 1 game + 1 round).

That's why i was a bit confused when Richard didn't get any win in top 8 (same for you and gino) and got to 5th. But it's all good. Fluxcore has already shown the results.

Yeah i was just about to say that all GOOOD Sagat players look the same till they face each other, and tbh it was simple to beat Hue, Reverse Uppercut his strings, keep him off you and dont miss ANY AA, he jumps alot against Sagat, But do i REALLY have to tell you? You's play each other all the time.I'm over it anyway you's are just gonna ride each other all night long.

I believe from my memory the placing is what Fluxcore has put up,
Hue and Richard both won one game in the top 8 brackets before they got knocked out so 5th place equal, where as Gino and James both lost on their first game in the top 8 matches 7th euqal.

Just a note to you guys: Weezy = loud mouth person who will spit of ur face every time he drinks or smoke dope :)
Whats the point of replying back? /ignores most the time :P
just don't under estimate your opponent or you will face a horrible lost.

Yeah that's not quite how it works. Richard entered the losers bracket later than everyone else (barring devilstar), so he automatically gets a higher 'placing' despite not winning matches in losers. It will probably be more obvious once the actual bracket is posted.

Crazykiller just contradicted himself, saying he didnt do well at tourny because he didnt know he wasn't gonna be able to use his stick, then 5-0 to me when he used his stick, lmfao.5 matches is long, and must've burnt deep into Hue by his reaction.

GGs guys, thanks alot organisers (this comment is my original).

Tournament was awesome, damn you Munta for beating me lol.

But yeah great day, awesome meeting everyone and then playing at Giga afterwards. Me and Stu having the double random battles.

Stink that we didn't get to come see you guys (munta, stu, ioane) before you left today, we were just blazblue'ing and sf4ing at Smoofs.

But yeah tournament was awesome great to see heaps of you guys.

Yeah I put in a lot of practice, but honestly, looking over my matches, I think I could have done MUCH better in all of my games. I missed far too many opportunities (esp vs Andy) even though my spacing was fairly on point. I'm glad I got as far as I did, but I wanna place at least top three next Nationals, so get ready for more Viper.

We'll meet up at yifans for a challenge soon I promise, and thanks again Simon, you are the MAN ~~!!!

Yeah Jay, where the hell you been negro, and WTF are you guys doing up at 2:30am, dont you have school Hue,
thanks to the tournament being held on Sat. I spent all friday's night for practice + all Saturday for the tourney then went to giga until 2-3am with fluxcore, gino, lenny, etc.... Now i need to work overnight to catch up with the tests and assignments. And yes, i have school tomorrow. I'm half dead already.
I wish i'm as strong as Ryu so that I can go there and SHINKYU-HADOUKEN my school away.

Woah, where to start?
this is gonna be huge so feel free to just find your name read your comment and move on if you like. Here goes....

For someone who comes from a place with absolutely no scene this whole weekend of SF geekdom really meant alot to me. I haven't seen anything like this anywhere since Super turbo was on the scene and even then the passion or even number of players was even close.

First off thanks for everyone for being so generous, friendly and supportive. Also for keeping the scene alive! Great to meet you all in person.

Cheers for everyone for listening to me ramble on (I talk even more in real life). I rarely get to have any strat, matchup or even character conversations out loud to anyone with any sort of opinion.  ;)

It was awesome to be able to rub shoulders with all these top players and the 4 on 4 at giga with you guys was hell o' fun!

Graham/Geneterror
Cheers to you and Suzanna for having me stay at your pad. Also sharing all your insider knowledge on how the scene evolved who plays who, how they play.
Also for all the epic casuals in the church of
Blazblue (Probably gonna buy it)
KOF12 (Might pick up if netcode improves, more DLC),
MvC2 lesson, schooling (Bought a can of mini pringles on the plane ride home.... real talk) and of course ....
Street Fighter IV (You and steve vs my bro goodtimes :)

Lenny
Thanks for all the insider knowledge. You are a fighting game encyclopedia! Shame you didn't get throw down at the tourney we had some fun casuals though. Cheers for the car rides and showing me all the good places to eat, Auckland YUM! Be keen to hear your top 5 funk album list. Also Auckland airport Hyper Fighting Casual maddness!

King Piccolo
Your Fei is sick, boosted my confidence in the console cast. Also you and the crew hear go was back so it was cool to hear the stories from you guys.

Stu/Stereomonkey
Awesome Project Justice/Hyper Fighting matches at Yifans, cheers for all the footage and for capturing all the matches. I'll put together a fun vid over the next few weeks.

James/Hydro, CrazyMobius/Simon
Thanks for all your advice pre tourney and during the tourney. You guys are the scientists of street fighter. It great how you break down the games and matchups. Also thank you for taping my matches! If there's some way I can get hold of them that would be awesome!  8) Also your matches were some of my favs to watch. Bummer you got paired twice even! Mad for some epic battles though.  :)

Coffindrop
Man rocking the Honda! awesome to see you do so well bro. Keep at it :)

Andy
Had no idea it was you I was fighting! Thank's for schooling me with your Ryu. And for baiting me twice for the two times I caught you with my Scarf.

Kevin/Simon
Thanks for all the chats and Kevin for schooling me with Gief at Yifan's also for the after team tourney games at Yifan's. Simon that Abel match was tense.

Smoof
Cheers for the invite to stay at your pad all those months ago. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have even made it up here. Also GJ on the judging. Cool watching your Sagat matches later on too.

Gino
Fuck I hate Blanka. Good match that peaced me out of the tourney. Sorry I didn't make it harder for you  ;) Good to catch up though man. Next time more scarf less balls.  ;)

Alan/Fluxcore
Awesome Seth Rose match. Best Seth I've ever played hands down. That rushdown is sick! Cool to catch up, congrats on a successful event. And for the prizes I was honored.  :) Rose recognition!

Hue
Cheers for all your help too. And for the words of praise about my Rose play, really means alot coming from a player such as yourself.

Weazzy
Bro, sorry. Good match that last one though. I was holding back a bit in our casuals before the match just in case we met in the tourney. I had a bag of tricks to use and your nerves let me use them on you. Glad you got some good casuals in though.

Euan
DA DAMAGAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!!! Good Ken match in the Team tourney Bro.

PJai
Epic match man. We were both playing the meta game hard with Honda, Sagat, Akuma, Rose psyche outs. Glad I fluked that Ultra on crossup. Down to the wire!

IronSol (I think, that Honda player)
Another epic match, probably my fav actually. EX Reflect beats sumo butt WTF!

To everyone else I played at the tournament thanks for the epic games.

Also Alan if I could grab a pile of NZism cards/flyers off you and I'll plonk em' in all of the games stores down here! Build the SI community. I'm sick of online, doesn come even close to the old school styles!

It was great to meet you CptMunta !!!
Thanks for all your support with the Promo vids and coming all the way up Auckland to support this tournament!!! much appreciated.

Be safe down there and hope we can meet again!!!

on a side note for your information: I would recommend you getting the PC version of SF4 if you can as I believe it has a lot of skillful players on there and the range of play style will be different. Best way to improve ones knowledge/ skills is to play much more different variety of players. :)

NP Marc, shame we didn't catch up again on Sunday (Lenny wtf man, what was that?!?) - I really must get around to making the business card into a reasonably sized file so I can put it up on the site. Good showing in the tourney though, and I hope I get to see your matches as well! (if they were recorded, does that give some hope that Hydro's matches were recorded as well?!?!)

I've got all mine recorded here at home, EXCEPT my second battle vs Som/Mobius, which should be on Stu's memory card???. The Hydro vs Cr8zyk1ll3r match is LOUD, I can hear Weazzy and Simon going HYDRO!!!!! And the finish is awesome! I'm having trouble with my internet connection, so I may have to go over to lenny's to upload them to the tube, then we can have a gander.

Thanks Gankatron & Jack, you showed that xbox competition isn't a joke!
I guess if there's one piece of advice, it would be that when you make a mistake or get hit by something nasty, both of you took it pretty hard and perhaps it influenced the rest of the match a bit too much? In tournies you really have to let it slide and just play your game with what you have left - if you watch the top 5 or so people they basically all have pokerfaces the whole time!
Once you two have a bit more experience you're going to be absolute fiends I reckon!

The above could be said for a lot of players I saw. A lot of people were getting the shakes and shit with what just seemed to be inexperience. There's a difference between being cautious and just not being offensive at all, not being a dick or anything but the Yifans players seem to show this the least probably because they're playing in conditions kinda simillar to these everyday. I really encourage the guys who don't to try to put themselves in whatever competitive situations they can. Even if you're only spending $6 at Yifans it's really worth it.

what Alan is trying to point out is really self control, keeping calm in tournaments helps you think better with no pressure and you will make less mistakes.
If you make a mistake, take it calmly and just tell yourself it won't happen again and keep up the spirit. Have faith in yourself and you will do better than you expect :)

control yourself and you will control the match :)

Actually I think this is true. If you can play down at Yifans and keep yer nerve with a big crowd you should be able to do it at a tourney as well. Also you can reverse the whole thing and actually feed off the crowd!

Playing and watching those matches on the big screen was where it was at for me. The tension is increased and those near misses or comebacks are amplified 10 fold.

I listened to music while I was playing, Really helped me keep my head screwed on. I also talked to the other player I was facing before the match just to break the ice.

I listened to music while I was playing online before the tournament just so I could get into the mindset.

And weezy, I'm not Cody, I'm Mason and I not to make excuses cause you're pretty pro, but I was kinda trying to watch the stage match when we played. I definitely do wanna play you in a serious tournament match though.

I'd prefer to have a crowd of chicks surround me when I play drum rather than having a crowd of sausages surround me when i play fighting games. :D
Now this bring back memory, i remembered there was an asian girl among the crowd cheering for my Ryu (i think i got about 30 wins at that time). She was clapping & jumping Whenever I was about to lose and came back with tiny health on the last round. The strange thing was that her boyfriend was standing right next to me with a killer face & demonic aura. I was so afraid that her BF would get jealous and shoryuken my head or Ultra hit me from behind.
If you want people to cheer for you, do long & cool combo and keep rushing down until you die. People love to see "superman"

We played on both ps3 and xbox360 consoles. My Ryu didn't do well in the tournament. ^_^ I was lucky enough to get to top 10. I'm planning to take a break from SF4. Been busy with studying and other games. lol.....
and yeah Kientan, is he the best boxer in Aus ?? We've had some good matches but I barely see him online these days. I'm wondering if he's got even better now.

Another epic match, probably my fav actually. EX Reflect beats sumo butt WTF!

Yep that was me. And damn, I really need to learn every match up with honda T_T. But yeah i'd have to say that was my fav match (that i played) although it knocked me out of the tourney.
