I dunno bout VGA...but Component runs at 720P or 1080I max...

...if you're gettin' a grid in dark parts of the screen using HDMI...shee-it...that sounds weird!?
Possibly the version of HDMI cable or HDMI version compatibility with your TV...?

I've only seen that sort of problem when people are using an HDMI to DVI converter...
and even then it was only when using a 1080P panel as a PC monitor and a particular media player just wouldn't produce a 1080P res but other media players would.
