Aim - Recognize and list all aspects of the game. Learn how to recognize these aspects in-game. Monitor which aspects you need work on.

How can this be achieved? â€" Watching replays and monitor when you lose energy and which aspect of the game could have prevented this. This will over time let you be aware of this while you are playing.

List of defensive aspects:

D1 - Tech Throwing/option select

D2- Mis blocking. / high/ low/ overheads/ crossups/ after a reset.

D3- Leaving yourself open after a missed attack.

D4- Leaving yourself open after a missed execution.

D5- Leaving yourself open after a missed wakeup reversal.

D6- Hit out of focus.

D7- Hit while jumping.

D8- Hit while dashing.

D9- Hit while walking forward or neutral.

D10- Hit from an opponents focus attack.

When you watch the replay put on slow-mo and pause it after every time you get hit. Record the appropriate code from above. You can then use the data as you wish. (Note you may wish to list misblocking as D2a, 2b etc etc)

This only really improves your defensive game but it does work.

Interesting stuff here - I might have to give it a go, although I think there's going to be plenty of D6's and D7's :(

Widen your eyes, there are always mountains higher than the ones you see.

I stopped using this after I wrote it down but James has continued and said it has helped him a lot.

I think this would be a great use to beginners especially.  ;D

Hydro

The terminology I use is slightly different ie: Whiffs, counter hit etc but yes I can atest to this working quite well.

I block. All the time.

I've been trying the offense chart too, working on OS's and oki game, with combo opportunities, correct punishes, and character specific traps and sets ups for zoning etc. It's a solid mix of trial and error, but I feel my style has tightened up considerably now.

Thats good to hear u guys are stepping it up.
Hope to get some games in soon.

I had a few games with Hydro the other day and he has really stepped up with Rose. He;s definitely doing something right.

My Ryu didn't really have a chance and was quite guttered as he's never been so bashed before lol. Not knowing matchup aswell made me feel powerless.

Gd info Mobius. Yep defense on cross over attacks are a challenge. Such as bisons cross over kick attacks can be deceiving. I find when bison jumps over to attack which seems to look like a behind my guile attack, so then i press forward, only to eat boot. Its almost like its a central scalp jump attack, most times it is a front attack. But working on defense in progress. "c'mon c'mon c'mon "

Post up your terms dude. This is a work in progress. Offensive version would be good to hear too.

Hydro

Okay, my terms for defense.
These are the terms I use to categorize how I was/am being hit or what I got hit by.

MM: I Mistimed a move. (such as missing a reflect on a fireball)
WH: I Whiffed a move. (such as whiffing a s.hk)
CH: Counter hit. (being beat out by an opposing move)
AA: Anti-Aired (Hit while jumping)
FA: Focus attack (Hit by a focus attack)

NB: Not Blocking.
NBL: Not blocking Low.
NBH: Not blocking High.
NBCU: Not blocking a Cross-up.

BD: Hit while Back dashing.
FD: Hit while Forward dashing.
FO: Hit while Focusing.

TT: No tech Throw.

I tallied all the times I was hit and categorized them into these classes. then I broke that data down into a picture of sorts that would help me determine where areas of my defense was failing.

For me, based on my analysis, 60% of my recieved hits were from mistimed moves, followed by whiffs & counter hits. Simply put, I push too many buttons for no good reason (Good reasons for doing things is becoming my next task). (Conversely I also rarely get anti-aired and that's because I refuse to jump lol)

I had to realize I had this weakness and then set about being more conscious of NOT pushing buttons. (At least for no 'good' reason). It's a multileveled task, as not only do you have to work forward from not pushing buttons as a habit, you have to be conscious of the purpose of pushing buttons when you do.

I feel I've got a decent footsie game, and concentrating on spacing/zoning is a strength/objective for me, but I needed to polish off the 'fat' of the 'loose' pokes and mistimed moves to really polish my style. It's a huge conscious effort, and in studying my replays I'm getting a better sense of what I'd like to be doing vs other players, and most importantly how to do what I'd like to be doing as a player.

Overall I think it depends a little on the individual player and the character you're trying to develop. But being conscious of the style you wish to play, then becoming aware of your weaknesses feels like good progress to becoming a better player.

I've just started working on a similar chart for offensive hits (as in hits I land). I've also put in terminology like 'missed punish opportunities' for situations where say I've opted to throw or sweep where a c.HP xx spiral (for example) could have been done. Offense is much more multifaceted, as you've got not only knowing how to do combos and punishes when situations arise, but creating opportunities to do so.

The list is long.

Anyway I've probably ranted for long enough, so yeah, that's what I've been up to lately. Couple this with studying match-ups and I think we're onto a winning formula. :D I'll post more findings if anyone wants to read em.

Hydro's tip of the week:
If you find yourself getting anti-aired often: don't jump (and concentrate on your ground/zoning/footsie game). :D
