If you were going the route of making a stick yourself, could you get a cheap controller like this and cut it up and rewire to a good joystick/buttons put in a new case? or is there a bit more to it?

Really just looking into options... a self-made stick would be more satisfying in the end (not overly keen on "game themed" artwork) plus it will be helpful when coming to the control panel section of my full-sized cabinet that i'm starting on. Will just be using a keyboard 'til I get something underway be it a home-made stick or a bought one.

Basically butchering a controller and putting decent buttons etc onto it is, in a nutshell what you would be doing. You want to make sure the controller youre getting has a common ground PCB, otherwise modding it becomes a bit of a mission. Do a bit of research on the SRK tech forums. Theyre incredibly helpful for this sort of thing. And a bit of research on the controller youre looking at buying and you should be able to find whether its common ground or not.

ther eis a thread on about custom sticks and all you need to know on SRK forum.
Bascially you got the idea of gett a game pad and ripping it apart and wiring it up to the joystick/ buttons.
I use a PS1 analog controller pad and did the exact.
