Game Rules:
Players are not added to the brackets until fees are paid on the day.
Tournament played on Street Fighter 4 for the XBOX 360.
Players must sign in for the tournament on the this forum or contact me directly.
Tournament is bracket-style double elimination format.
No memory cards or third party memory devices can be used by contestants.
Contestants must use the provided stick/pads, button config changes are allowed on pads only.
Contestants can only choose ONE main character to use through the tournament, Gouken/Seth is NOT allowed.
Both contestants may select the same character when competing in the matches.
Both contestants should select their character independently and press "A." Players may select any color, personal action, or win quote that they choose (these do not affect game play). Players should NOT adjust their handicap. It defaults to 4 stars, and any adjustment will only make the player weaker.
Contestants will be paired off randomly for the opening match. If there are an odd number of contestants in the opening match, the organizers will randomly determine the contestant who will receive the opening match bye.
Player position (player 1 or player 2) is determined by a coin flip prior to game set-up.
In the event of an outage of power, accidental unplugging, system freeze or some other event not in either player's control that would not allow the participants to finish the game, the game will be restarted.
The game mode is the following:
Versus Mode
Mode: "Player vs Player"
Round: 5
Time Limit: 99
Tournament organizers have the final ruling regarding any mediation of the tournament.
Any technique possible within the game is allowed during the match (e.g. throws, unblockable Focus Attacks, etc.).
The winner of the best 3 out of 5 rounds advances to the next round.
In the event of a tie (from "Double K.O." or "Time Over") – select "rematch" from the post-fight menu, and play the match from the beginning as normal until a winner is decided.

Players may turn up on the day and register, but below will give me a fair idea of numbers etc.
If you change your mind please advise me with PM or post here.

Depending on how many people show up, we might be better off with a round robin. Yes it will take longer, but better that than a tournament that lasts half an hour.
And I reckon we need to throw in some Marvel aswell for those of us that want to play it.

Gouken/Seth are pretty strong. I personally dont mind either way. Fact of the matter is, theyre no stronger than friggin Sagat >_>

This is an elaborate way of describing a standard knockout tournament. If you dont lose, you dont get knocked out, therefore you win. I dont think the 'winner of the losers' fighting the 'winner of the winners' has been considered. Probably means the two of them wont fight, so there wouldnt be a losers bracket at all. Thats how i read it anyway.
And Ben/Gunsmoke needs to register himself, since he seems to have forgotten.
Im also going to ask that you register Richard/Samurai Black, and ill fill him in on the details.

Seth/Gouken is your call. I can understand why they would be banned, and i think everyone will, for the most part support the decision to ban them if it goes ahead.
I figured counter-picking would be your reason for no character changes. A valid reason too. But like i said before, it might be best to see what the masses think about this.
As for marvel, i totally agree we should wait for the turnout. I just thought it would pay to put the possibility of it on the cards.
For the most part, your regulations all seem fair. I think the only errors really just bare down to some minor confusion

Personally I think counter-picking is somewhat part of the game, but of course in a 1-match only set it isn't so important. It's simpler just saying 'one char', but I think it loses some value.
Double blind goes like this: One player tells the organiser who he will pick (out of earshot of the other player). The other player picks whoever they want. Then the first player picks the character they said they would pick. This way you can't sit at the screen forever waiting for another person to pick, you don't KNOW who they picked, but you still have some mind games for char choice.
Example: I know Gino will pick Ryu, so I pick whatever char I think does best against his Ryu. However, Gino anticipates this and picks Blanka which counters my counter.
Well lets see what the other thoughts are.
For now we stick with what we have and thanks for explaining the double blind :)

I can understand why we need to ban Seth. But Akuma is banned also ???? In the arcade version, akuma is playable and he's NOT a boss, he's just a secret character. And in many Japan Tournaments, Akuma is not banned.
Banning Seth and other characters that we can not use on the arcade version is reasonable.

Gouken does huge damage anywhere on the screen but has no solid ways of getting it in. Hes got pretty average defense and zoning abilities to go along with it. I really can't see him being top

tbh I think thats the difference between a strong Zangief and a scrub zangief. Scrubs can still get plenty of wins, but when you shut out thier air game theyre stuffed cause they dont know how to poke and set up their mix ups and apply pressure before they jump in.

there are a few options, we could have it at RvB and if they are willing to sponsore the venue etc would be great, else we will have to pay for it which will come from the entree fee... which would suck :D
another option would be a Yifans, I could try and talk to the guys there for sponsoreship, place and free games during the tournament.
but I havent tried them yet.

Yifans are dicks when it comes to that sort of stuff. We would have to pay the full $2 per game. We have already tried this with marvel.
Post up the price for securing the venue when you get it and we might all be able to colelctively sort it out. Or simon can pay it since hes being gay and not coming.

Also will cost us about $180 for the full 6 hour for the Projector room!!! now from what we got now Assuming everyone will pay :P we got about $110 with $10 per head. with advertisement etc I'm hoping to get at least another 10 or so people... the extra cash will contribute to RvB and us for drinks or whatever ( can be decided )

ANyone got a Vid capture card so we can capture the footage all pro like and edit it and stuff afterwards?
If not I was gonna swing by the computer store and pic one up after work. We could set it up to record the matches properly instead of "Ultimate shakey hand camcorder footage of doom".
This way we can set up a PC. (I'll bring mine if you guys want I have about 800gigs free so that should be plenty of room) and have peoples names and shit in the footage as well.
The setup I am thinking of is having a splitter off the xbox cord so that the signal goes to the TV that the games are being played on as well as the comp... that way the comp gets the footage without lagging up the gameplay.
Any thoughts?

Yep, having a laptop with something like the tourney maker program I have stickied here is really handy.

Promotions is a must, since our community is so small we need as much of this as possible to get more people invovled.

I actually find it quiet fair, Play your best char. As with most japanese tourny it has always been like that.
I'm taking no chances of being bias saying this is the best way, but instead of having people wasting time counter picking etc. everyone has their char to play and thats not shown until their FIRST MATCH, so everyone would of already chosen their main and no changing is allowed. This will be recorded by us before any games are started.
This rule is a general rule and i think it makes things lesss complicated.
Yeah, there's a bit of a different style to the Japanese tourneys and the American ones. Since it's zosla's tourney, he gets to decide, and that's how it is :)

That's why they have a timer. Remember both players have a chance to counter pick so it's balanced. What happens with the timer is surprise choices at the very last second. It's exciting and part of the strategy.

Simon i see your point in counter picking, its true it is part of the game, but its one part that seems a bit lame to alot of the new players as well. They wont know what is what. so when you think about it most of them only knows how to play one or two chars and you will have some lame ass people counter picking waiting , the mess gets bigger and fairness drops right out. Not sure if you know what i mean, but when you have one char for your whole tournament, you will PICK very carefully and play your best which in return makes the tournament more highly skilled.

Incase some of us hadn't realised, Simon's the best all rounder in NZ IMHO. He and I have been playing the plethora of characters since the game's release, and he is fearsome on everyone from Fuerte to Dhalsim, Guile to Sagat from Blanka to Dictator. We both could play up to any of seven characters currently and be pretty proficient against anyone, that's certainly something compared to THOSE who have HAD to stick to Ryu *winks at Andy* lol.

Ohhhh come on doood you can't become the best Viper player in Australasia with that attitude. Bring the diversity man! If you don't no one will be exposed to certain characters potential in sfiv ;).
Also even though it may require more skill to play several characters proficiently it does not take away anything from people who stick to one character in an attempt to master him/her.
Lets face it this is our scene and its so small that you have to accept there will be little character variation. At least these guys really know how to play there characters and aren't random ass shoto scrubs.

I'm the type that if I can not beat the majority of people with my main, then there is no way I'll move on. Because it means I am still not skilled enough, I like to master my char.
I have been practicing with a few other chars too but think about the cost it involves for me practicing $2 per game, then lose to some scrub that comes along and thinks it funny when i haven't even had a go in learning the char...
Unlike some of you who has the game at home now you can play anyone...
It is just the cost per game that restricts many of us to play other chars but it doesn't mean i don't know how to, I could play, Gief, Guile, shotos, Sagat, Chun and the others just not good as my Ryu, so its like a praise to you guys that i have to use my main in order to beat you guys :)
But if that is the reason your not coming then I think its a bit sad to hear, because your practically looking down on us, the ones who plays their main.

2. What kinda of display are we going to be playing on? projector? hd projector? hdtv? crt tv? I've read that projectors can have problems with lag.

The Tourny is double elimination, If anyone got the all characters unlock on their card please bring it. This tourny will be in the projector room, I'm not sure about the lag? if there is any we can always switch to the HD LCD or something.

Personally I would prefer to play on the hd screens as thats what I use at home and its very different. The stages don't look strecthed and the characters are the right size. Maybe we should get a poll going?

Two points on that.
!) Winning isn't everything. Sometimes it's OK to have a fun and friendly match.
2) Playing other characters will actually improve your main character game.
Hey Andy what are the prizes? I think it's fair to announce the prizes beforehand to see if casuals think it's worth their while.
Have you approached EB or JB Hi Fi to get in on sponsorship/voucher prizes?
u sound very confident in your skills. Have you played against other players at yifans? Why don't you come to the tournament and show us who is the top player instead of talking it here.
About character selection, i agree with Andy. Counter picking is lame simply coz 1 character will have upper-hand than another. Don't give me the crap that all characters in game are perfectly balance and no one is better than another.
To people who thinks Counter-picking is "strategy", believe me IT'S NOT.
In fighting game, strategy = you know when to go offensive/defensive/confusion. Counter-picking = giving urself an upper-hand compare to ur opponent. And what if both players just keep waiting to counter pick each other ??
And knowing how to play MANY/ALL characters in sf4 doesn't make you the best player. It just means you've spent much more time/money(unless u have the game at home) compare to other players. The best player is the one who defeats all other players with his main character (Not by using the lame counter-picking so called "strategy").
Whoever disagree with me. Come to the tournament and show us that you can be the top player without counter-picking Instead of doing all the talking here.

(Mantis) j.hk, s.mp, s.fp xx hands link s.mk xx hands. you can sub the last hands for super if you have meter, then ultra after that if you wish. Gen rules, and yes, his cross-up owns boxer all day lol. (OOh and Andy's lucky it doesn't work on shoto's!)
Ben & Andy: Good for you on wanting to master particular characters, I still think it has more to do with winning than mastery, but there you go, it's my personal opinion. My philosophy has always been one of diversity, adaptability and progression, it's like, never been about 'beating everyone'. ;)

Yeah its definitely in part about winning but there are other factors too. First of all this is my first fighting game really...I've only played a little bit of third strike beforehand...maybe 50 matches against some kind of human comp...so I really don't understand how street fighter works. I understand how boxer works but give me anyone else and I'm pretty much as good as any random dood who does wakeup srk all day long. I agree, and I'll add that actually the only thing only picking one character for the tourney does is that does limit ONLY those who CAN play mulitple characters, whether they be 'counter' characters or not.
So Ryu is the ONE character you feel confident on versus most matches, well mine may vary depending. So you get your way, and I have to lump it, who would you have me pick in this tourney? :/
Against Andy's ryu, my boxer is sufficient, against Ben's boxer maybe Gen, Chun or even Viper, Against Simon's Sim, hell, even Rose or Claw may be my most confident. As it stands those who can play multiple characters are at a disadvantage because of the one character only rule. Awesome.
It's Andy's tourney, and that's all good, needless to say the tourney Simon and I have planned will cater to a more varied character palette: Play who you like.

Organising a tournament is not easy and thanks to many of you who has helped really appreciate it.
At this point I am also thinking about the new chars on the console version, testing if any others are too imbalance.
The rules I have taken is from other tournaments (Japan), I beleive they have their reasons and i think it is ok. I couldn't Agree more with the fact if you play more chars you will improve more since u know their ins and outs.
But this is a tournament, use ur main, come have fun, see how far u can go. Learn from your opponant and keep this community live.

For now,
Ill just take the nick name/ real name.
Char specific information will be taken on the day and you will only tell the person who is organising the brackets.
I've just realized that new characters are not banned....
This is just my opinion.
I THINK: Players who don't have the game at home will have a "slightly??" disadvantage since they have no idea how to fight against new char. While the one who owns SF4 can read ur char moves just like reading a book.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
To be honest, If i have to fight against new char, I'd prefer to fight against Seth/Gouken. Even they are quite unbalance but at least I will know what their moves are and MAYBE i can counter them. But against new char = ????

Yeah Ive devoured all the info on the thread in SRK. I'm pretty sweet on all the combos atm and hit confirming into super. Really enjoying playing him actually, just need to play against more good shoto, sagat, and gief players.
Ive got his Kara throw down too which helps alot. Ive always been good at execution and stuff, just have to work on my spacing, pressure and patience atm.

Gouken: completely not a shoto, if that's what you think. His moves are utterly different to A/R/K. He is ok, only really dangerous thing I've seen is backthrow->ultra, which takes off tons. Completely legit char.
Seth: takes so much damage and stun, unless you are untouchable he's pretty worthless. Would take hella balls to play him in a tourney.
Gen: actually quite nasty. Has a very difficult to see cross-up, and you really need to block low forever if he has super/ultra, otherwise you're getting popped up into the air and a long and painful experience is coming your way. Also has really good priority on pretty much everything.
Sakura: not really that good at all. Needs quite a lot of EX meter to do any real damage. Poor distance game - gets raped by blanka.
Rose: Solid, but nothing especially tricky. Don't ever jump or throw a projectile when she has ultra.
Dan: pretty much sucks
Cammy: pretty much sucks
FeiLong: pretty much sucks - I wouldn't worry about his inf. on Abel/Seth, chances of seeing a FeiLong/Abel matchup are pretty low. Chances of seeing a FeiLong are pretty low too. El Fuerte has a semi-inf too on EVERYONE, and that's not being banned, so fuck it.

Thing is this is a console tourney. I think it would be a shame to ban all the console characters just because some people don't have it. We might as well play down at yifans...I don't know about the others who have the console version but I have basically no experience against 'high level' cammy, seth, gouken, fei long and sakura players. Ive played a decent dan once, rose and gen maybe 10-20 times in total. We are basically in the same boat except I've played the computer versions of the characters a bunch of times which means nothing. I don't think many if any are going to play console characters but in no way should they be excluded on the account of a few. If we do now are we going to ban the console characters for all future tournaments?

No, im saying that if you dont have it at home, and you want to learn to counter characters that you havent played before, then your only real option is to go to youtube/SRK and find match videos that would help you conter them.
I agree with you that its a bitch to play stuff you havent seen before.
Watching a few videos DEFINITELY doesnt make you tournament-worthy, but if you have no other options, its essentially all you can do to prepare.

As I mentioned tournament rules are not always perfect... Lets give those new char a try and see how it goes this time. I'm sure we can hold more of these in the future, for myself i have not played one single game nor watch a single video of game play of those new chars lol... but I am doing this for the fun and stuff.
For now lets keep the rules as they are, unless we find something lame we have to ban them? I am considering banning the infinite combo for chars who can do them, like at most you are allowed to execute them twice and must stop or you are considered losing that round? something like that.

Bleh I say!!! The char with infinetes suck cock ATM anyway. It's like any game with an infinite, you know they can do it, so don't get caught in it imo

MvC2 does wonderful things to your opinion on banning stuff :)

I only know of one 3:7 match up and that's, ahem, Viper Vs honda. And even that isn't that hard. Besides, your character's 'bad' or Hard match-ups are the ones you should be the most prepared for, then they kinda become a counter counter match-up.
Trust me, that's how it's gone with my Viper vs Boxer/Blanka and Honda, play those matches enough and you'll catch someone out who really doesn't know how to play those characters but picks them anyway just to 'counter' you. then you, being prepared for their counter play, have your own counter-counter play against them.

I tend to agree, on the whole this game has far fewer lopsided matchups than other SFs, although admittedly I pretty much gave up Sakura due to the Blanka matchup (amongst other things).
My Viper certainly has trouble against Dictator and Honda, and I think that's partly because of her moveset, but mainly because I haven't worked out how to use it against those chars. It's not like I've played enough to anywhere near exhaust the possibilities!
Maybe if we're done with the tourney and stuff, we could do the random 2v2 thing like flux suggested. Imo it'd be cool if we got to play with randoms who we didn't know :3

Im inclined to agree with this. Every character has SOMETHING they can use as a counter to a bad matchup. Even if it just bares down to changing yor playstyle up completely

Also on the note: for starting times, Please turn up early, the tournament registration will start at 12 Pm and closes at 1 PM sharp.
This will allow players to get ready warm ups etc.

I would've gone with this aswell, but RVB has something on at 8pm from what i understand, so we will be doing a double elimination.
When we have more sticks we can run more machines at the same time which could make this possible.

They are just broken characters from my perspective, more than any of the other new characters.
But i did not want to take away all these charactors since many people would like to use them. I've explianed many times and no I ain't bother to search and link those videos coz if I had the time I would spend it on organising this tourny for the benefit of everyone. Now the rules are set, only people that really complains about this rule is you and simon, its simple stuff.
Keep in mind this is no serious tournament, I would put this as a first gathering for the future tournaments which we then can have better rules, better sponsors etc.
Now can we just keep it that way?

its about sharing skills/knowledge and have fun in battle.
When I started playing I did not know Ryu was high tier or what so ever, I just used him because i know him from previous SF so it makes it easy to learn.
eg: you're saying someone like Daigo is not pro since he only use Ryu for tournaments etc.
It doesn't work that way, so don't be complaining about char and improe youirself and more on.
Im picking up the Capture hardware tonight and will be testing it tonight.
Will give feedback on how it goes later tonight... might even post some matches.

Been playing around with the capture hardware. Unfortunately it only captures in SD. Ive ordered an HD one from the same outfit though, and that one will come out in the next month or so.
Glad to hear your boxer is goin well? You got that Headbutt juggle into super/ultra down? Thats some easy gravy right there. Therell be a few boxers you can "observe" at the tourney too.

Also, if you hit the left or right bumper during stage select, you get a slightly altered stage. But this is pretty common knowledge now.

I think that was geneterror and I-got-paid with the dual double KO's and one on the last round . Also the double EX dash punch and they both just cancelled each others punch out . Never seen that before !
Definitely have to see this match again, dont think I recorded it on my cam will have to check on my other computer sometime and get what I recorded upload to the tubez.
Cant wait till the gameplays are uploaded, are the just going on youtube or a file server type thing? Keens to download the whole lot.

Yes I went through all 7 or so hours of the footage and have plaucked out all the good matches. THey will make thier way onto youtube over the week.

My el fuerte needs to get better. Admittedly, this was my first experience playing human players with him. In hindsight i probably wouldve done a lot better had i picked a character i was more familiar with, like abel or sagat.

Haha.... that was funny !! We will try to arrange 1 tourny like this every 2-3 months. Then we will have about 3-4 tourny a year.

Making him come to you is fine, but 'taunting' to do it is never a good plan. Its different against my fuerte, since i had no experience with him whatsoever. All i wanted in that tourney was to land his ultra, and i did, so im happy. ;D
I didn't see one marseilles roll or f.mk in any of your matches, and these are arguably the best tools abel has on offense, and "rolling the fuck away" is also useful defensively. Abel is strong on the ground, and at close range, and i noticed the only tool you were using to get close was a jump, which obviously became quite predictable as the matches went on. Im not trying to be a dick here, im just trying to help improve your game, from one Abel player to another :)
Bustabust on shoryuken is a VERY good abel player. He has this blog up for those of us that use abel. You might find it useful.

With abel alot of players forget about his wheel kick too. QCB+kick. You can use that alot too to get in and to force players onto the ground so that you can poke and roll your way in.
His sweep is fucking awesome too. Can cancel into the wheel kick. they have to block low then high.

Honestly, I'm not trying to defend myself but:
xbox controller is so crappy compared to xbox elite controller :-X It's tiny... I kept wanting to do Change of Direction but it becomes Tornado Throw rofl... My ultra also always came a second after I wanted it to come out... Not to mention a random jump that appears so suddenly.
But they're not excuse, cause I know with Elite or Arcade pad, Simon's Abel will still spit on mine.
But ye, when I see a fight againts Fuerte, I have to say I underestimated him (Not the player, but the character) - I just got live like yesterday so I'll be more prepared next tourny.
But this time, I'm going to Cammy my way through. (I'm sure her ass will distract my opponent once or twice).

As for the rest of it, cammy is awesome. Once i get a stick/upgrade my xbox live/learn el fuerte i might give her a whirl. Rush that shit down.
