Title: Music
Post by: Coddfish on March 12, 2007, 02:25:53 PM
Couldn't hurt to get to know our fellow warriors better, so...

What sort of music are ya'll into?

I'm a rock fiend, with a (small) side-dish of rap/dance/whatever else. Most rap makes me want to tear off my ears, to be honest, but there's some good stuff hidden in there; notably Eminem, Tupac, and recently Wu-Tang/RZA.

As far as rock goes, I'll listen to pretty much any rock. Hard rock and metal are my favorite, though. (One of the countless reasons I love Guilty Gear).

My top bands would be, in no order: Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Soil, Leaves Eyes, Nightwish, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold.

How about you?

Shit, you really don't want to get me started. I'm one of those people that have a 200+gb archive of music, but have actually listened to all of it. I generally go through phases of different genres... the biggest were Electronica/IDM (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Luke Vibert etc) and Hip Hop (Blackalicious, DJ Shadow, WuTang Clan etc), but could never stand Eminem, and never got into Tupac...

However, having said that I've most recently been on a Grindcore/Black/Death metal tip, I'm afraid to say. I'm about at the end of that though, so gotta find something new to listen to...

Im pretty much into everything, though i tend to favour decent rock music, GnR, Stone Temple pilots, Rage against the machine etc. But rather than go into a massive novel about what music i like, im just going to show you a poorly filmed video of the greatest song ever concieved.

I mainly listen to Hardcore, Metal and Hip Hop. I'm also prone to a bit of Country with J.Pop and Anime soundtracks in the mix
For Hardcore I like mid to late '80s and later Hardcore. Mainly New York stuff like Judge, Madball, Sick Of It All, Warzone to stuff like Bulldoze, Clubber Lang, Shattered Realm, Blacklisted, Reign Supreme etc. Of the current NZ Hardcore bands I like Moment of Truth and Burial plus a few others.
I tend to like my Metal to be of the Black/Death variety with a bit of classic Thrash. Everything from mid '80s stuff up to the current bands. Classic bands I enjoy are bands like Beherit, Blasphemy, Dark Angel, Kreator etc I still follow newer bands though and liked recent(ish) albums from bands like Dead Congregation, DeathSpell Omega, Unearthly Trance etc. I also like NZ Metal like Skuldom, Vassafor, Diocletian, Ulcerate etc
I listen to a lot of Hip Hop, mainly mid 90's New York stuff like Capone 'n Noreaga, Big L, Nas, Mobb Deep, Lord Finesse,D.I.T.C, Gravediggaz etc but still follow current stuff. I like the last DJ Muggs and Planet Asia album a lot as well as the last Guilty Simpson album.

I like the classics - Fleetwood Mac, Phil Collins, Bowie, Prince, Survivor, B52s, Chicago, Pat Benetar, Stevie Wonder.

Also I like me some metal (classic metal, fantasy and glam) - Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Danzig, Dokken, Dio. The Transformers soundtrack.

Used to like a lot of stuff I don't listen to anymore, like new stuff. So I tend to just hang out with the older stuff now.

I really liked Kanye West for a while.  ???

I thought Graduation was great. That's the only album I got of his. I just heard so many songs on the radio and C4 that I eventually got it and then when I listened to the way he composed his rhymes I got hooked. I never heard anyone do a rhyme with a word that is similar to the word it's rhymed with so often.

It felt like graduation was the peak of his ego but then it got too much after that.

'doctor alibi' started off good, but then lemmy started singing and i went 'aww man'.

also surprised that fergie didnt ruin the song she was on like she did B.E.P.

Ghost is one of the best opening tracks ive heard on any album.

And Doctor Alibi is fucking amazing. Admittedly, i can understand Lemmy Kilmeisters voice isn't for everyone. But keep listening to it. He grows on you. (I used to think he sounded crap as well) Admittedly, he's showing his age a bit. Sounds like he's struggling to sing at some points. I love it though. Probably my favourite song on there.

The thing about the album is that a lot of the songs sound like songs made by the bands of the lead singers (By the sword sounds like a Wolfmother song, and Crucify the dead sounds like an Ozzy song etc.) The difference being that the guitar tracks have all got the Slash magic factoring into them.

The only song i dont like on the album is the one with Adam Levigne. That shit sucks. Fergie's vocals arent great on her track either, but i was expecting it to be a hell of a lot worse, so im quite pleasantly surprised by it.

Its an album that isn't what i would call revolutionary. Its pretty old school metal. The good kind imo. Back when it had musical value, and it wasnt just some tard yelling into a mic.

Its essentially just Slash being fucking awesome, and managing to make a bunch of different singers sound great. Except Adam Levigne. Of all my musical purchases, i am by far the most happy with this one.

(For fans of the genre, i also recommend playing 'Brutal Legend' on PS3 and 360.)

Brutal Legend is awesome, even if I pretty much hate most "Heavy" Metal still a fun game.

I think I'll pass on Slash (might give it a quick listen) there is no way it will be as good as the new(ish) Alice In Chains ;)

I knew Premier would end up doing something like this, even though Guru wrote this before he passed:
QuoteI do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.

Haha yeah I know whenI say my beats are unfinished it basically means I haven't gone hard with the bass  ;D FL Studio can be so limited....

I would record it myself if I had the right equipment. I'm still experimenting with FL Studio and whenever I create a bassline with it it just doesn't sound like what I would like it sound  :-\ Sounds too "artificial" for me
Title: Re: Music
Post by: CaptainHook on August 31, 2010, 08:09:08 PM
Maybe try bass synths rather than trying to get a bass "guitar" sound..?
Embrace the "artificialness" and work with what you have?
Title: Re: Music
Post by: Nick4now on August 31, 2010, 09:38:26 PM
I've used bass synths in previous beats and I really don't wanna be recycling the same sound lol But yeah you're right just gotta work with what I have. Gotta keep experimenting with all the sounds and maybe I'll find what I'm looking for.

Good to get some critisim though. I really don't share my beats with people outside family and close friends so I never get to hear outside opinions at all  :)

You must've got the last copy of Mental Funeral off Rhys.  I heard he got a few of those in for his distro.  I'm on the hunt for a copy at the moment - and saving up for the Onward to Golgotha re-issue later in the year.  The Witchrist albums rules.

And yeah, Panacea being drum 'n bass / techstep.  Got to love those disgusting distorted break beats.

She seems VERY serious about it. She's not stupid, so i'm guessing maybe delusional..? She always says how she thinks she does
Michael Jackson covers better than MJ did it himself because he's very "monotone and boring" in her words. I don't know if she just

I tried listening to Proclamation and Archgoat, the music is alright but the low vocals in both bands seems average and a bit out of place with the music.

Ha, the only time it sounds average, or flat is where parts of the song originally written in B guitar tuning didn't translate well over into A guitar tuning used on the album.

yeah, im easily amused by, for lack of a better word, 'upbeat' sounding music. like the actual lyrical content could be depressing as fuck, but as long as it sounds happy ill be, 'this song is awesome'

also i was shocked when i heard the new linkin park track. didnt sound like them at all, it was missing all the teenage angst and shit :O

That's pretty g though. Niggaz got so much money , he can probably get someone else's  teeth if he gets sick off it.

one of the presents i got from my sister was the new kanye record. i like it. def darker than the previous outings, which sorta isnt my thing but whatever.

favourite track so far is monster. it has nicki minaj and while i dont really like her music just her fat ass, she kills it on that track. jay z is also on the same track and is less rubbish than usual.

Maybe. The mastering process is quite different so it tends to sound different to a CD or cassette anyway. Most of the cds these days are mastered for over the top volume at the expense of clarity and dynamics (take a look into The Loudness War if you care to), whereas it doesn't really work on vinyl.

Personally I find the physicality of the medium quite appealing, but there's also the artwork. Being able to actually tweak your player with different cartridges, needles etc is kind of cool too - what can you really tweak on a CD player? I guess you can solder in new DACs but that's not really something anyone wants to do.

You can find some really cheap shit at op shops too :)

What Alan said about the loudness wars is true, plus analog vs digital baby. LOL.
Even better is if the recording was to TAPE instead of a computer(digital capture) and then to vinyl.

Analog is generally naturally flattering in any format compared to digital. Take a look at film vs digital capture
in photography/film/movies/etc.

My assessments aren't just from an audience perspective, but as an audio engineer/photographer and i
can tell you analog capture is much easier to manipulate into something more pleasing as well.
(having said that i personally think it IS possible to get digital close to analog, but it requires a lot more
manipulating which is usually more effort/time..)

So you're probably wondering what the downside to analog is?

Cost.

Analog is much more expensive.

So basically the whole world has dumped quality in favour of cheapness/convenience. Aka mp3s or youtube. Lol.
Title: Re: Music
Post by: LN on May 05, 2011, 12:23:13 PM
The reason I didn't get into the analog vs digital thing is because THEORETICALLY 48khz or so sample rate is completely sufficient to encompass the range the human ear can really distinguish. Beyond that it kind of becomes "audiophile waffle" about some kind of audio gestalt that doesn't really fit with theoretical knowledge.

MP3 is another matter obviously, but that's a bunch of heuristics so it's really dependent on the source...
Title: Re: Music
Post by: CaptainHook on May 05, 2011, 12:58:24 PM
Prob not the place to discuss, but 48k is okay if the ADC/DAC implementation is done well enough. (band pass filter design etc). Otherwise there's aliasing issues that can occur within the audible range. Good designs are expensive to RND and produce, which is why 88.2/96k is often used. Its cheaper and easy than doing a well designed convertor that runs at 44.1/48k and puts any aliasing errors and such outside of the range that matters to us more. Lol @ us for cheapness winning again. :P

Probably not a surprise that many "older" digital convertors work much better @ 44.1/48k than more "modern" designs do.

But it's not about if digital can capture accurately (to me), its that analog capture imparts it's own character to the source that is IMHO generally flattering.
Designers spent a lot of time developing ways to make up for the "flaws" of the analog medium and in doing so, created processing that most of us like.
Digital for the most part seems to aim for "accurate" and as i've learned, we don't want the truth. We want the fantasy. :P

Film looks great. My photos shot on 6x7 transparencies look fantastic straight out of camera compared to digital (which need post work to get the same).
Same with motion picture. And everything i've recorded on multi-track tape sounded more like "music" playing it back "flat" than all the straight to digital stuff.
(again, i do believe with further post-processing you can get digital to compete with analog)

Analog reproduction is similar, but the difference is not always so pronounced.

So for me it's not about which is more accurate (i dont really care), i want the most flattery out of the box because it makes my job easier, and i enjoy
the results more. :)

That seems to be analog still.
Tape. Vinyl. Film.

Although i primarily use digital because it's cheaper. LOL!

QuoteReally disappointed to be honest. I love everything Autopsy have done up until this including the EP that came out not so long ago. The vocals are to loud and everything sounds to nice especially the guitars. Also the "clean" vocals on one of the tracks (I think track 3 or 4) are horrible. The Return.

There was also a Gorgoroth album there, but it was just an empty case :( Wonder if someone there exorcised it first, it has an upside down cross on the cover and is called Antichrist, hah
