Intro:
Now the nationals are over it’s time to resume the ranking battles. As Lenny has stepped down from being the main organiser of NZism events due to university commitments myself, BIRRY WONG (thanks for the edits) and smoof have decided to split to workload as no one is really in a position to organise everything themselves.
Cost:
$10
Prior to the 2010 nationals the ranbats, at best, were breaking even and on some occasions were actually losing money. Obviously this can’t be sustained in the long term, nor can the organisers be expected to make up the shortfalls to run the events. In light of this, we have reluctantly decided to charge $10 dollars for the ranbat events from now on.
What you get:
For your $10 we will run a third setup which will initially be for the double elimination bracket, the setup will be swapped over to casuals once someone has been knocked out. In addition to the extra setup, we will be recording how many times you come to a ranbat and prior to the release of MVC3 we will be entering everyone into a draw for a free copy of MVC3! The more times you come to a ranbat the more entries you will have in the draw!
Entering the ranbats will also provide you with an idea of where you stack up against other people that attend the ranbats and will help determine your seeding in events such as the NZism Nationals where players are seeded and not randomly entered into the bracket. You'll also get to play against some of NZs best players and get some good feedback on your game.
When and Where:
The next ranbat will be held at GIGA on the 26th of November, 6:30 rego, 7:00 start. The ranbats usually run every fortnight but this is subject to change. Check this thread from time to time to keep up with the latest announcements. We usually run till about 10pm.
Scoring:
A ranbats score table is posted in the post-tournaments forum which records all the points everyone has accumulated during the ranbats season. Scoring is based on your placing in the double elimination and is as follows:
1st - 10 Points
2nd - 9 Points
3rd - 8 Points
4th - 7 Points
5th to 6th - 6 Points
7th to 8th - 5 Points
9th to 12th - 4 Points
13th to 16th - 3 Points
17th to 24th - 2 Points
25th to 32nd - 1 Point
If for some unknown reason a single elimination bracket or other form of competition is run at the ranbats then the points system will be changed accordingly. Notice of any such change will be made prior to an event.
Q&A:
Do I need to bring anything to the ranbats?
Arcade sticks are always useful! We usually have Xboxs covered but it can never hurt to bring one! If you do bring one remember to bring your power cable, a VGA video input cable and copy of the game.

Final words:
2010 has been a pretty big year for NZism. Particularly those of us that hail from Auckland. We're rounding it out with a final season of Ranbats, looking toward events scheduled for late 2010, as well as early 2011. Get to these ranbats to not only get to play the best Auckland has to offer, but to give yourself a leg up for the inevitably epic shit we will be bringing you in the future.

Queston about the ranbats seasion, when does it end? and any intended purpose for these or is it just purely for seasional ranking etc?
Hopefully Lenny will still be helping from time to time, he just won't be the only person doing it all!
We'll probably have two/three ranbat seasons before the next nationals to help do seeding, etc. If we run any other tournaments we'll be using the ranbats results for seeding.
And it's for fun, to grow the community, etc.

They usually go until about 9 or 9:30.

Improving at these games is not not a gradual increase. Youll spend a while playing and losing, and then one day, everything you learned over that time will all just fit together and everything will make sense. It comes in waves. You learn something new everytime you play. Sometimes you FEEL like you arent learning anything, but you ACTUALLY are. People tend to learn things in pieces. And you will inevitably have a few games where pieces come together and shit just ALL makes sense, and then you build on that and become a MIGHTY BEAST.

My PS3 setup isn't perfect as the LCDs I use have some lag and I can't be fucked switching between my CRT and LCD all the time but if you're around Central Aucks a lot which you seem to be I live 15mins walk from Giga at the start of New North Rd, always happy to have a session or two at my place to help you out with SSF4, can even play some HDR if you keen? We even have a carpark in our building that we don't use coz we have no car.

Get your shield and sword ready then dude cos the ranbats are already formatted in tournament style. It's usually double elimination. But you can still learn a lot because at any one time there are a lot of people watching and talking about the action.

The guys running the ranbats now have set it up so that each event is $10-00, but there is an extra casual setup that runs the whole time. When you are knocked out of the tournament, you are able to jump on the casual setup.
Worked pretty well last time.

Highlight for me was both me and Karizzma going down to last hits of the last round with fong, and doing the EXACT SAME THING IN THE EXACT SAME SITUATION but Karizzma was 1cm closer to fong, so his thing hit and won him the round, whereas mine whiffed and i ate an ultra.

Yeah it is quite a difference when you're so used to big lcd tv's, even more so if you play online. When I get the chance to play online I try use different characters than I do offline so it doesn't screw my timing up too much :o

It all depends how many people are keen to play HDR/HF once people start getting knocked out! If a reasonable amount of people wanna have a jam on it then we don't really have a problem with chucking it on but if it's only 2-3 of you against 20 people wanting to play SSF4 then it's pretty hard to justify 33% of the setups being used for 10-15% of the players.
toomeke used to bring a 3S setup to the ranbats so people could have a jam on that but IIRC he paid for the majority of it himself, you could do that too if you're really keen on just playing HDR, put your $10 entry towards a setup (we can arrange a monitor for you in advanced) and try get a few guys to chip in with ya.
Basically, I can't promise shit, but if the demand is there on the night I don't see why we can't do it!

I could prob bring everything i own if it's easier. (i got a benq G2420HD cause peeps said it was lag free and logitech Z4 speakers..)
It costs $10 bucks an hour to run a setup. Even if you bring your own monitor, xbox, sticks and game, it still costs $10 bucks.
We usually just take our own sticks and xboxs and use the giga monitors so we don't have to lug monitors around town, and that if someone who usually brings a lag free LCD doesn't show, we're not down a setup. it also means we're not just paying $10 for power/venue hire either, we get monitors for our money too!

If you say this then I don't really think you're approaching the game with the right mentality. Even if you don't learn much from getting smashed, there's a lot to learn from talking to people and watching the games. If anything you should at least pick up some matchup knowledge from watching the other people play. Most of the dudes are pretty sweet so you can at least ask them "Why did you do (x) here?" and they'll usually give you a decent answer.
Julz, come along anyway, if you get rolled in the double elim bracket you'll still get to play heaps of casuals and you'll get heaps of tips on your play! And if you're still not keen, bring a setup for blazblue and you can teach me how to play that once the ssf4 brackets are finished!!

That still requires being able to understand what you're seeing. If for example you still haven't even learnt the move set of each
character, watching games goes right over your head. I don't even recognize if a match, or even if a player is good by

From experience, I remember when I first started playing SF4, I saw stuff that I didn't know what they were.. such as Focus Atk... then I saw Focus Cancel... then I saw FADC into Ultra and so on. All these are ???? to me at teh time, it was liek wtf you can do that? and liek what can I do when they do this? I start askign people questions liek you are now, but I didn't stop there, I moved on to watching videos of the top players such as Daigo as he mains the same char as I do. I try to understand and see why they do certain thngs at certain cituations, how can they get out of bad spots etc. As you watch, you can try it out at ranbats/ yifans etc. If it didn't work, try it agian and again until u find out more and more about ur char and how to use what at when. Once you lose a game, recap on why did you lose? to what? watch more vids, see how you can imporve in the gameplay and again try it at the next session whereever you have it. Play the people you always lose to, get use to the matchup and such.
There is much you can do to learn and get better, but do u have the heart to keep going? I personally work full time liek many of you and I use to go to Yifans eevry lunch time to play the arcade crew and thats where I learn majority of my current knowledge of SF4... which is next to nothing !!! technical no... hell I didn't even know what frame data is until Mason told me!!!But experience wise I did get plenty.

Yeah but by you saying that, you're overestimating my skill and knowledge at SF lol. I don't actually play SF; I just randomly started playing it on and off at the arcade about a month ago to the point where I'm not quite "spam hadouken constantly with random shoryuken's thrown in" like all the kids at the fish and chip shops used to be, but I'm nowhere near being able to recognise moves for every character, or even combos and moves for Ryu, the nub that I use.
Pretty much just copy/paste everything that CaptainHook said, because it was perfect.
Esp the part about needing people to talk to you in game thing. Lenny did that for me once or twice, and those 50 seconds of training were prob more valuable than my 20 rounds of fighting against a retard AI Zangief which I couldn't even beat anyway.

As stated, I jump into SF just as you guys did, not knowing anything blah blah blah.
U just have to put the effort in and say, okay I will start from here and then move on to here.
Don't expect to sky rocket in the first 3 months, it took me about 6-9 months to actually know what I was doing... and I think I am a really slow learner already. SO if ur anythign liek me :P thats teh most it would prolly take u :D
Also best thing is to stick with one character first and then move on when u think u are ready, jumping around on characters can be a + or - but if you're new, I recommend just stick with one first then slowly move on.
The AI might not be super great, but if u set it up on the hardest mode and maybe pick Akuma, Ryu, Ken as ur opponent, you won't dare to jump in :Pits good training to teach u NOT to jump :)

Smoof and Andy are right on the money. Its not 'underestimating your ability at SF' at all. The same rules apply to anyone across the spectrum. If you dont know what youre doing wrong, ask us. Ranbats are the BEST opportunities to do this because we are all right there. People can demonstrate stuff, explain stuff, even coach you through a round as youre playing it if you really really want. The bracket is just there for seeding purposes. Its a casual tourney. People seem to be blowing it out of proportion.
The best point here was when smoof said youre not approaching it with the right mindset. If youre worried about getting smashed in 15 seconds, then NOT playing is going to keep you in the same spot for longer. plain and simple. Youre much better off going and spending your games figuring out WHY youre getting smashed. Dont even go into it trying to win. Go into the tourney with the mindset that youre going to figure out what it is youre doing wrong. Go home, spend the next fortnight working on these things, and come back. Rinse and repeat if you like. But i can 99% guarantee that when you come back the next week, you will have noticably improved.
To put things in perspective, if youre worried that youre going to get beasted at ranbats, then Ranbats is the best place for you to be.

You have to understand that it's like a bunch of sprinters saying "just run with us at our fortnightly races. You'll learn
by just running with us and watching us and talking us". Actually, i don't have the balance to stand or walk yet, and
need to learn the mechanics of shifting balance with my hips. So crawling on my hands and knees while you sprint
down the track won't help. When i can stand and walk, then it will make sense.

THats what videos do :) what I do is when I see a similar combo\ move set, I will slowmotion pause it and watch carefully as each move executes, if I don't understand it the first time, I repeat until I do or if I still don't then I will ask at the next ranbats or whatever :)
I know u want to play more and I understand fully where ur coming from, what I am saying is that u need to bring the right mind set when u do play and not randomly and 15 secs later, of damn I lost and move on.

You missed the point a bit there. Im saying, come to the fortnightly races, and learn how to run. Basically im encouraging the bolded statement, but on a grander scale. Dont think of the ranbats matches as competitive, but use them as a gauge. If something doesnt work, ok. You lose. Think about it a bit. Ask how you can counter it effectively, get peoples insight on the matter. Come back the next week, use this knowledge in similar situations. See how you do. Compare it to last week. Where can you improve now? Etc. The great thing about Ranbats is that there ARE people there like Lenny who can help you out as youre playing. This is like 90% of what the point of them is. To help people to get better. The tournament, despite being the 'main event' if you like, is primarily there to give people tournament experience. (Playing tournament games and casual games are VERY different scenarios) The seeding element is just basically a 'prize' for winning.
This is what i mean when i say 'wrong mentality'. The 'Problem' i have isnt with people, such as yourself, who show up, play, learn, enjoy themselves (even if this means playing other games afterwards), its with people who say things like 'Im not gonna come because ill just get wasted' then they DONT come, and they complain that they arent improving. Ive seen it a lot over the last year or so (particularly with people down at yifans tbh) THIS frustrates me, because theyre going around in circles. Ranbats are meant to be fun, and theyre meant to help people get better, meet all of us etc.
The people that come to ranbats enjoy ranbats, because its fun, its casual, and its the BEST way to improve. Ive seen way too many people thinking its some nazi regime where they have to come and be as serious as possible. And naturally, they dont turn up. As you know, this isnt the case.
Don't focus on what combo killed you, focus on why you got hit by that combo. Was it an ambiguous crossup and you just didn't know? Ask someone and they'll tell you whether it's a guess or not. Did your dp whiff/get blocked? Did you wakeup with something dumb like jab/throw? Was it an overhead? Were you throwing something out that just plain got beat? If you know this at the very least, it's a bit of matchup knowledge.
tbh, there's no point in saying this if niggas don't practise themselves. Learn your punishes is #1 easiest thing to do and very effective. I guarantee you if you can do the maximum punish possible 100% of the time you will beat a good number of NZ players at ranbats. Learning the ranges on your normals, combos ect is all stuff you can do in training mode and if you're not even willing to do that then just come to hang out lol.

My point was, at this early stage of the game playing with people like Lenny who are really good at coaching you AS you play
is way more productive for a beginner like me than the competitive matches at ranbats. UNTIL i get a bit better. So i will just go for

You have to understand that it's like a bunch of sprinters saying "just run with us at our fortnightly races. You'll learn
by just running with us and watching us and talking us". Actually, i don't have the balance to stand or walk yet, and
need to learn the mechanics of shifting balance with my hips. So crawling on my hands and knees while you sprint
down the track won't help. When i can stand and walk, then it will make sense.

I don't actually play Street Fighter. I never even used to like it.
I play Blazblue (before that, Guilty Gear), and Street Fighter is just something I decided I wanted to get into recently because I thought I may as well, since I started visiting NZism, (met a few of the guys who were all legit dudes), and everyone on here plays it.
As for Ranbats, in keeping with the analogies, who goes to a chess tournament before they even know how to play? You can't even say, watch these pros playing and learn, because you don't know how the pieces move, and you 're not at a skill level where you are able to pick out why people do things they do.
So with Street Fighter, when I say I don't play it, I actually mean short of doing quarter turns and 623's, for hadoukens and shoryukens, I have nfi what's going on when I watch a game. No combos, and a focus attack yet alone a focus cancel is a completely foreign concept to me. Like CaptainHook said, a casual 1 on 1 environment like when Lenny taught me some basics at the arcade (granted not with the character I use, but still) and told me how to actually play is a lot more useful than a competitive environment.
It's ok if you play against somebody, you know what you're doing and lose and you ask later, hey what could I have done?
I would't want to put people through me asking "teach me what each button does, which moves are anti airs, and give me some combos and 5 rounds to practice them." Because that's the stage I'm at with Street Fighter.
I needa learn how to play the game, before I can learn how to play the game.
It's not like I don't wanna play, like Hook I'm keen to learn. Will I never go to a Ranbat? No, but I learnt to count before I went to class to ask the teacher what trigonometry was.
So don't assume, Birry, that because people don't go to Ranbats, myself included, is because of any lack of will to learn. For me, the reason is I'd rather be at a level where competing, and yeah inevitably losing will actually teach me something rather than fly over my head -
before I start coming along.
As it is I don't even have the game yet so it's not like I can go home and practice what I learnt that night :/ That won't happen till after uni is over.

But lastly, to basically the only point I wanted to raise was have some BB:CS going at the Ranbats lol. It's a pity NZism is so SF orientated (it is, even if you tried to deny it).
BB is 'my game' and it'd be nice if it were popular enough to be played there. Maybe in time, once it gets more accessible and out on xbox so another setup isn't needed. I actually made the decision to start playing SF to give me a reason to even go to Ranbats, because I do wanna meet more cool people like Lenny, Ben and Caleb err, Smoof (I think). And I look forward to meeting more cool people. Like Geneterror, who invited me to his house to play CS even though he doesn't know me at all and doesn't know that I won't scope his place out and rob it the next day.

Well, my play history consists of like, 10 Ryu battles lol so I'll prob stick to him. I can only play at the arcades so SSF chars prob won't be useful till I get the game at home. Otherwise I think I saw a Juri video and she looks ballin.
I wasn't planning on doing anything cept uni stuff till after exams, but yeah I might just take the night off next Fri and come down.

Ragna has good pressure, and hes also really simple to use. His HP is a touch low, but its not akuma levels of low. Taokaka is really mobile, and also falls easily into a rushdown style if thats how you want to play.
As i say though, you can play aggresively with the whole cast, seriously, just pick a character you think is cool. Since they all approach their offense in different ways, if you havent experienced the game before, just jump in with whoever. Obviously there are chars with a higher learning curve than others.
In terms of an easy learning curve, Ragna, Jin, Taokaka are probably the most simple. They were in CT anyway, and i dont THINK any of them have changed that much in terms of how they play in CS

As for who to pick; if you want rush down and relatively easy to learn/use Ragna is your best bet. His pressure rapes anyone else's pressure, be they from BB or GG.
Mason, ask Caleb to teach you how to use Ragna. Caleb doesn't use him, but he knows how he works, and like basic B&Bs and such.
Don't go Hakumen, Carl, Tager and prob Lambda if you like rushing though.
Oh, and how late do Ranbats usually go on till?
One of the main reasons I've never been before is the buses to Te Atatu are shithaus, but since the Ritchies ones got changed up I could stay till like, 10. Unless someone out west is driving and could give me a ride.

we'll be starting the ranbats at 7 pm but most people turn up around 6:30pm. tournament usually finishes around 9pm and we play casuals for about an hour after that. Lol yeh it kinda is. But still, it's all about the best cards and who can make the best matching set with the 3 cards you have etc.
And yeh if it were up to me, people would stop using Ragna so much. But oh well. IMO start BB with Ragna, cos he's easy mode, then realise that the rest of the characters in BB are so much more interesting so drop Rags like a bitch and go with someone more interesting. Like Arakune.

Last nights ranbats were awesome, really good seeing everyone again, alot of new faces too. I really like having the three setups, it was good getting in alot of casuals after scrubbing out early. One thing I didn't realise til Rory pointed out to me was that I was kinda hogging one of the setups, I was just having so much fun playing :D. So maybe look into setting some rules for the casuals like a 5 win limit then you have get up, or just two different players after each game.

I've been playing Tsubaki a lot (still Tager as well) and have her b&b combos down a lot better now, I kept missing the down, down and A finisher last time we played. This give sme a lot of space to charge her Drive, even though it's still hard to find the space to charge against people with moves that can cover full screen like Hazama :P
Can't nail her air combo though but I'm working on it. Also can't do the relaunch off down, down D I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I wish someone else played her so I could ask. Back to trawling dustloop for answers ;D

Just a couple of things guys. We are gonna try something a little different with the casual setups. The first one is gonna run as per normal, but the second casual setup will be for people to challenge each other on, with a best of 3 setup. Heres how it'll go:
If you want to challenge someone, you agree with them and then you both Q up for the challenge setup. You guys jump on and play a best of 3 set. And regardless of who wins, you then both jump off.
The reason we are giving this a go, is that some people that are still learning aren't really getting a chance to try stuff when they are immediately beaten off byt the intermediate players, or players that want to learn a particular matchup cant play the other person as they have to wait for the stars to align and put them both on the same console at the same time.
Obviously this will be hard to manage, so please be considerate of others and make sure everyone gets a turn.
Also, no alcohol up at Giga anymore! Tony has specifically asked us to stop doing that.

I can't play that series. Don't like the character design. Same reason I couldn't get into Guilty Gear.
Char design is quite nice.... I think most fighting games nowdays have very nice animations and design. Reason I don't play many of them is due to having to learn a new system and putting tons of time into it.
I know it's all subjective, but man I am surprised that between GG and BB there isn't a single char design that's appealing.

Two TE sticks and a PS3 are to much for me to try and take in as I walk into Giga, especially considering I can't put them in anything waterproof so if it rains all my stuff is fucked.

^ I just fail to adapt Weazzy - I go in with my normal style that beats some players, and loses to others. Then instead of adjusting accordingly, I just do the same dumb shit and get punished for it - even though I can see shit coming a mile away, muscle memory gets the best of me :/
Also bro I'm pretty sure if we played at ranbats it would be 2-0, 2-0 hahaha

Ranbats was awesome as usual. Thanks alot to Hook for the rides. First of all I beat Fong (though he only used Guile) and then got beasted by Rob's awesome sweeps :D
Then beat Hook (musta been your first Sakura as well) and then omg Josh I hate you so much.
I saw he was doing EX bingo on all my safe jumps, so I thought I'd close it out with jump in OS demon. The demon comes out and his fucking ex zonk hits me arrghhh. Then he gets another one through a block string and kills me :(
But at least I learnt a few things.
Also shot Graeme and Julian on the BB games. BB is awesome and I can't wait for it to come out on xbox. I actually got a couple wins and I hit you with I think it was 2 astrals Julian :DDDDD

Fuck dude, I don't know if you notice but you're definitely getting better each time. I hope you stick with cammy cause you seem to be getting better with her. You were good at punishing stuff and had the ranges on cannon drill down really well too. I think you should just work on throwing less and just keep smashing away with the sick cannon spike pressure. You should only start throwing when you know that I am too scared to tech, as opposed to throwing me cause you didn't get damge the last couple of jumpins. Just get your head around using the throw to set me up for more damage instead of using the throw to score direct damage damage (lol sounds really cryptic) and I reckon you'll start to hand out the smashings.

Giga has it's flaws but it's infinitely better than heaps of the other venues we've considered. As it stands we'll be running all our events there until we can provide our own gear 100% of the time or Lenny wins lotto. The only thing Giga really needs is air conditioning :O

Its really hard to find a good suitable place, if you have something in mind please say so, but from what I know, I don't think there are better venues out there...yet.... unless something opened up recently and I don't know about it.
