I've taken a bit of a break lately but a few recent releases in Japan have sparked my interest again.
Some faves from the last few years include Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Soul Eater (my favourite), Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Valkyria Chronicles, I still have some Elfin Lied and School Rumble on my comp I haven't started to watch yet. Also keen to check out more Eureka Seven, the new series from the people that made Soul Eater.

Moviewise not much has interested me since Spirted Away really apart from Aachi and Ssipak (Korean) and Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The girl who leapt through time) both of which are original and really well animated.

I miss the classic anime from back in the day -wicked city, ninja scroll, devilman etc.
but recently FLCL has been my favourite series.

also Code Gease and of course Naruto.

I should like Anime but the reality is that I don't really follow any or even watch any. I care about the character designs and the art but not so much the stories... Also none are weird or wacky enough for my tastes.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure,

It's in the Title. Probably this and Death Note which I just finished watching over the weekend are my favorites.

As for Movies: Tekkon Kireti, Princess Mononoke, Paprikia

Books: JoJo, Eat man, Samurai Executioner among others.

Ninja Scroll is a classic. Also, I just watched Sword of the Samurai the other day... although the story gets a little gay, the fight scenes are fuckin' awesome

Try Bakemonogatari, it's airing this season, by Shaft. It's about an ex-vampire and a girl who had her weight stolen by a crab, the animation style is Shaft quality, lots of visual elements thrown in your face. Same with the sound, atmospheric and strange.

I've been addicted to Souten Kouro recently, as a huge RTK freak I couldn't pass up an anime about Cao Cao being totally awesome and going nuts.

Yeah ditto that, GITS rocks.
The 2nd film Innocence was also excellent. Funnily I find the first film to be the least engaging - though still very good.

You might also like Eden of the East, also production IG - less action & less Tech (more current day) than GITS but similar social commentary etc.

Yeah JoJo's is cool of course the books are better. There's even a scene not in the anime with a stand that plays for their souls but beting on beating them in video games!

Yeah I only meant Jojo's is wierd but that's probably what the " :P " was for  ;)

There's a lolicon series about Lu Bu being trapped in a little girls body in present day Japan, it's called Ryofuko-chan. The show is pretty lame, but anything with Guan Yu flipping cars has its merits...

Well you need to watch all 50 :)
I thought it was great (but I do like Vamps) - probably my 2nd fav series after GITS SAC1.
Though ive only watched blood+ once (fansub) while ive watched all the GITS stuff at least 3 times, hopefully it holds up as well with repeat viewings.

Perfect Blue is AWESOME, well it was when it came out I haven't seen it since then.

Grave of the fireflies is one of my all time favourite anime movies even if it is fucking depressing!

In terms of animation quality Ghost In The Shell: Innocence is still one of the best movies I have seen.

Has anyone else seen Aachi & Ssipak? I fuckin' loved it. Was good to see high quality animated movie out of Korea, also made it seem even more original becasue it doesn't stick to established traditions we have become used to from Japan. Shit is funny as fuck (literally if you have seen the movie) I have it on my comp of anyone wants a copy.

and was perfect blue the one with the popstar and her nutcase stalker? if it is, then i liked that one as well. still waiting for jb to bring afro samurai: ressurection, so i can have a legit copy

I watched Perfect Blue the other day... fucking amazing movie, both in plot and animation quality (for an early 90s anime)

I also watched Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade the other week as well... So amazing... It's quite sombre, but it's really well animated and has an interesting plot... I'm sure a lot of you would like it

Title: Re: All things Anime

I like a lot of films that have depressing endings, I think it's unrealistic and twee to end every movie with 'happily ever after'. Just as a particularly strange example, I really hated in Wall-E that he regained his memory and everything, I thought it was really awesome that he basically got smashed to bits and then forgot everything. I think that would have been an excellent end.

Anyway, I take it you did absolutely no research into Grave of the Fireflies before watching. A war movie where a sibling dies, yeah, SURE TO BE A BARREL OF LAUGHS AYE
Title: Re: All things Anime
Post by: maelgrim on September 22, 2009, 03:34:41 PM

Agree, sometimes there just shouldn't be a happily every after.
But you do really need to be in the mood for such a film.

I love it when the ending is more ambiguous e.g Pan's Labyrinth
you can believe it ended happy or not - up to you :)

For the quality of the film and it's story.
I watch heaps of depressing movies. I recently watched a Korean movie called Secret Sunshine, now that's a REALLY depressing movie.
Some of my favourite movies are depressing as hell. Reqieum for a dream, Trainspotting etc. Lifes not fair and you can't be posi all the time. I embrace my dark side, it makes more a more rounded person haha
I also listen to a lot of depressing music 8)

Way to pick one of my all time favourite bands Ben! Also one of my favourite songs ever, I was listening to it yesterday. This shit gets me pumped.
Quoteanother day in paradise
i don't think i've been happy
more than twice in my life
the first time i fucked
the first time i got high
i think there was a third
the first time i saw a man die
Sadly I know a couple too many people that this is way to close to the truth. I know I only got into it because I could relate to it.

By the way that's angry music not depressing music.
Depressing music would be Swans, Roses Never Fade, Blood Axis, Catacombs etc

edit: More awesome 100 Demons lyrics...
Quotemy hatred is unstoppable
and death for you will be slow
your sins are unforgivable
and your god can't save you now
i'll be your judge and jury
sometimes justice moves to slow
and i will show you no mercy
when i drop the final blow
too many times you fucked me over
too many times i believed your shit
i smell your fear and weakness
and it makes me fucking sick

I will for Ghost in the Shell & Hellsing Ultimate
The english voices are damn good in these.

But most shows I watch are fansubs so no choice anyway.

Lol nice Thomas. Yeah I've watched heaps of awesome girly animes and they are awesome like Ouran High School Host Club. But anyway watching naruto with my dad (still on season 1, dragging pretty long) and FMA. Also almost finished the 2nd series of beyblade for the lolz. I never saw the second series but boy they try and copy pokemon and dbz as much as they can in the english dub and keep saying how worldwide it is to try make all the kids buy them. Like they call their "bit beasts" to return. And from the start of the series they've been doing the dbz powerup to call out their bit beasts, but in the last episode I watched one guy actually got the aura and lighting around him and he was doing kamehamehas for some unknown reason.

The white one is just how it was bought, some limited edition release which hit with FFXIII release date in Japan.
The other one was black fat PS3 look by default, all I did was buy one of these nice skin\ label things from some custom console modding website I think, same thing with the wii skin.
It's like this special kind of label \ sticker which is actually quite durable and armoring and goes on \ stays on really well. Also peels off without leaving that sticky residue.
Recommend only if you care about the look or resale condition lol, they are pretty cheap and you can find some options on trade me sometimes.

Too young to adopt but if you're ever in Tauranga by all means hit it up lol.
Title: Re: All things Anime

Either way, your set up is fucking sick.

Maybe if I spent all the collective money from my like, 8+ hobbies into one, ie my computer and gaming shit, I might be able to get something like that. But oh well. I like all the other stuff too much. Like 40k and shooting friends with airsoft rifles lol.

Tauranga is kinda near Whangamata right? Excuse my geographical knowledge of anywhere that isn't Auckland lol. I suppose if I lived there I'd prob spend all my money on my computer and gaming and shizz too..

I wish I could be like Shirou from Fate, and be like Trace, ON! And just make carbon copies of all that lol. Because I want iiittt. Waaaaant.
Title: Re: All things Anime
Post by: Skullator on December 23, 2010, 03:22:39 AM
Thanks. Yeah it's easier to blow money when you actually live near a good CBD I find lol.
Geeking is OK but there are better things in life to most people haha. Gotta be careful the mancave doesn't get too epic or it gets hard to ever leave lol.

Whangamata is quite close, you just take a different turn off in Waihi and follow it for the final 30 minutes drive or so.
2 Hours south east of Great south road.
1 Hour east of Hamilton.
Tauranga's really nice this time of year, especially with young people actually here during the uni holidays.. it sucks during simesters as it's not really a student city at all with no proper university.
Title: Re: All things Anime
Post by: originaljulz on December 23, 2010, 03:38:57 AM
On leaving the man cave, I thought the exact same thing. I would never be able to leave that, and I'd never get anything proactive done in there. I find it hard enough to leave my computer. I'm on it like, 18 hours of the day lol.

Quote from: Skullator on December 23, 2010, 03:22:39 AM

That sounds like such an old person thing to say. But I see your point. I couldn't handle not having any young people around. Which is why if I lived there, I'd have a mean set up lol. My connection to the outside world.

But lets try to steer this back towards all things anime. I assume you watch a lot then? Any recent shows that you'd recommend?

Recently I've watched/in the middle of watching:
Ookami-san
Amagami SS
Asobi Ni Iku Yo
Bakuman
High School of the Dead
Ore No Imouto ga konna ni kawaii wake ga nai
Otome Yokai Zakuro
and one of my new favs: Seitokai Yakuindomo.

Finished off a few which I never got round to, including quite a few oldies. Like Aria, Airgear, the Haruhi rebroadcast (what the fucking fuck was up with the Endless Eight?), Monster, Durarara, School Rumble, Hikaru No Go. As well as a whole load of others.

It's easy to be proactive on your PC! Just gotta have the passion and the desire to focus on it instead of a game all the time :P Coding ended up being my buzz.
You can try do both too.. but I always found it's very hard if you also have to work and your job is unrelated to your study\goals. There was never enough hours in the day for me to balance work+study+gaming haha.
And thats EXCLUDING a regular social life altogether, good times haha.

TL;DR mancaves are good.
Better go sleep, last day of work is today and I start at 8 lol.

Edit: Saw your edit just after I clicked post lol-
I don't really enjoy very much current anime at all due to the moeblob explosion as of recent, not to say I always dislike that style of show.. but the ones which are brainless and lack plot \ good characters but contain fanservice for the sake of fanservice are often not worth the 20 minutes for me.
From this season though I found Ore No Imouto to be enjoyable due to the characters being interesting.

Here is my archive.. I try not to archive anything I don't enjoy, so I would recommend it all to a degree. I appreciate my taste is pretty niche though lol.
If you liked Amagami, you will like Kimi ni Todoke. It's way funnier and same style. Second season is landing next anime season too, so it's someting to look forward to which I find is always nice with animu.. being current and doing it weekly rather than as a batch that is.

g'nite, and yea endless 8 was especially bad when you waited each week for the new addition.... LOL. Kadokawa = viral..
Title: Re: All things Anime
Post by: originaljulz on December 23, 2010, 04:39:45 AM
Our tastes are pretty similar lol. I've seen/wanted to watch a lot of those on the list. Cept maybe I'm a bit less niche in that I'll watch anything. Not so much love for the Mahou Shoujo though maybe. Lol >o<

I get what you mean about plot lacking and fan service for the sake of fan service though. That's like, Tenjou Tenge (spelling?) in a nutshell. I hate that anime.

You like Ore No Imouto? Lol I think it's ok. I like the animation and the quality. Storyline is ok, but I can't dig the sister love thing. I'm pretty sure most brothers with little sisters can't appreciate these kinda stories as much. Or maybe they do? I don't have a sister complex so I can't say. And maybe verging a bit too much on loli for me. On second thought, I see the appeal. Maybe I should flick Mason a flashdrive with them on it lolz... Also Tsundere characters just exhaust me. More than super genki Haruhi ever did.

I did the wait weekly thing for Bleach and Naruto back in the days. I dunno, I don't really like it as much lol. Prob why I usually like watching it in batches. So either the whole thing after its out, or if its older, then the boxed DVD sets. That, and I don't really have time when it's not holidays. What, with work, study and all my other hobbies.

HoTD wouldn't normally be my kinda anime, but it's one of my favs purely cos of the ZOOOMMMMBIEZZZ.

G'niiiiiiiiight.

P.S I dunno if my watching the endless eight in a marathon (started at 2am-ish) is worse, or waiting weekly. Mine is a good 4ish hours of the same 20 minutes over and over again, but your way spreads over 8-9 weeks. But that also lessons the pain.

Haha, when you waited 3 years clutching at kadokawa's constant viral "LOL-ITROLLU" straws... then get a second seasons confirmed 9 episodes into an un-hyped rebroadcast...
Every single repeat of an endless eight episode.. which was completely re-drawn... and re-voiced... meant 1 less potential fave novel to be animated in the mysterious 28 episode run.
Some people were thrilled when they found out e8 would be a two parter!!! OMG it's 3 parts? crazy but effective! Wtf it's going to be 4 parts?

And did you know that after the 6th conseq. week of broadcasts.. one of the first channels to air the show immediately aired an apology message from kadokawa - "We are sorry, the wrong episode of haruhi was aired this week, what you saw was actually one week ahead of intended scheduled content!"
That's a godlike troll, but you really shouldn't troll your fanbase that hard imo lol.

Every new ep felt like a knife in the back to the hardcore fans haha, personally I actually somewhat enjoyed it all and look forward to re-watching it as a batch in delicious 1080p thanks to last months BD batch release. But it was disappointing to find out that besides bamboo leaf rhapsody, only boring\insignificant novel chapters would be coming to life.
Thanks to the films sucess tho, we will no doubt see season 3 and the final novel series possibly come to its closure finally.

And as for tsun, man kugimiya rie is my FAVE. Best not be bad mouthing that shit around me yo!

Wherever possible, japanese audio english subtitles.
I only archive the BEST release possible yo!

Yeahhhh sure.. problem is though I don't lug my desktop around and it has over 4TB in it haha.. my biggest external is 500GB + laptop storage of 320GB, so if there's anime\stuff you actually want single it out and I'll bring it to an event or whatever.

Got like 1TB movies (couple 720-1080 .mkv, majority standard xvid .avi)
250GB of lossy .mp3, 50-100GB of lossless wav\.flac,
150GB apps \ installers.
Some tv series etc. etc.
+ The 850GB of animu.

can do .txt's if you want to see some dir's of any of that shit.

I'm really keen to see Elfen Lied if you have it?

Checking that screenshot, keen to grab:
Chobits
Claymore (only seen a bit but liked it)
One Piece (by the time I discovered it I was WAY to far behind to start getting them)
Samurai Champloo (Suzannah and I loved this, keen to watch it all again!)
Valkyria Chronicles

Probably keen to grab more but we don't really get a lot of spare to watch anime so even just the stuff I posted would last us months. Keen for anything like Soul Eater though!
Will talk to you at the next meetup bro. Happy to give you some stuff in return but I think you have most of what I have already. Have you seen the movie Aachi and Ssipak?

Lol I didn't like the art to Claymore. Meh.

Dude, Samurai Champloo is one of my favourite animes. My friend was all like it set out to do the same thing as Cowboy Bebop blah blah (you know, music inspired anime etc) and I'm like -__-

Ninja Edit: Sorry that sentence up there should read "Dude, Samurai Champloo is one of my favourite animes. My friend was all like it set out to do the same thing as Cowboy Bebop blah blah but it failed and isn't as good blah blah blah."

The soundtrack Champloo is fuuuuuuucking epic. I card flourish to that shit.

Most of your want list is also on my 'need to watch list' but I can give you Samurai Champloo if you like.

Also don't mention Bleach or Naruto I gave up on that shit. They're seriously dragging those two shows on....

Card magic's lesser known, yet cooler cousin. All about hand dexterity, muscle memory. Harder than magic too. Once you get the pinky breaks, false cuts, false shuffles, and forcing cards down, you have the B&Bs for magic. For flourishing, every trick is so insanely different, you need to become a student to learn that shit. Which is why I never progressed to this pro a level. I have too many hobbies. And too many of those hobbies need to be like, a persons main hobby to be any good :/

Another reason is you go through cards so fast, and they're not cheap for decent flourishing cards.

Oh, and this is my fav song from the Sam Champ soundtrack, and it's one of the ones I used to like flourishing to. Sitting there with my friend playing with cards during uni breaks while listening to this kinda stuff is priceless.

Haha yeah man.  I reckon the only thing that could top them both is Heroes!

Um.  I've watched a ton of anime, but can't remember the names.  I don't watch that girly shit though.  If there isn't fighting or gun in it, then it can fuck off.  Tried watching that shit with the guy that bakes bread, not my deal.  Kept waiting for a fight to break out.

Robot+fight=GOOD

That sounds really sarcastic in my head, but it's not lol.

Fuuuuck I've watched quite a bit of anime but I can never remember what I've seen when people ask for recommendations. Two recentish ones that I would tell you to see is Durarara and Baccano. So well made, good stories, always good characters.

Oh and Mason, I wasn't reeeaaally making fun of Ouran Host Club. I've watched it too lol. Like, I really do watch everything and typically enjoy it all. I say I like your little magic girls the least, but I still watched Cardcaptors and enjoyed it back in the day lol. Wasn't Sakura's brother's best friend named Julian? And wasn't he like, the moon spirit thing and a total badass? Fuck yeah.

Yeah his name was Julian in the english dub which is like 100x worse than the Japanese version. They cut half the episodes in the english dub and made half the series flashbacks and cut out most of the relationships like her best friend tomoyo who was a raging lesbian for sakura. I had no idea til I watched the japanese version this year. Now I try to avoid dubs whenever possible. Beyblade dub even had some editing. I think one of the characters died but they didn't show it kind of mildly implied it.

Also want to find pokemon in japanese with subs, season 9+. Cause they replaced every single VA in season 9 and I can't stand it at all. Ash just sounds aweful and so do team rocket. But I wanna watch this shit cause it's pokemon.

Just recently got into KHR. At first I thought it was a little boring. No char development, story not even moving foward and basically a lot of the first few eps felt like fillers. Took like 20 something episodes to get interesting but now I'm actually enjoying it.

I remember being annoyed with all the flashbacks. It took up like over half of the anime series and when the flashback was finally over the anime was over too. The story was only just beginning too  :-\

Still pretty hyped for the new Berserk anime though. I hope it starts from the beginning again (like FMA:BH) since the first anime skipped some key points of the manga.

What order you watching it in?
What viewing order you watching in? That shit must be confusing as fuck to jump into late with all 28 eps available lol.

Broadcast order does not equal DVD order
Broadcast order does not equal chronological ordering of events (It was televised out of order or anachronologically)
Broadcast order has 2 part episodes which do get interrupted without any explanation by other eps which make literally no sence in between (Frustrating \ confusing when you have to wait a week lol)
DVD order does not equal order eps were aired in, company wouldn't allow them to sell DVD's in such a confusing anachronological format lol.

Through it all tho, I still recommend the shit out of broadcast order. It's a very unique show which unfortunately got a very "Iffy" second season.
Season 1 was (and still is) the most thought provoking anime I had ever seen.

Also a series of light novels, which are still being released. (Novel 10 to come after several years delay)
Doubles as my all time fave, till death bro.

Yeah I actually wouldn't recommend this to anyone lol Especially to the one's who are impatient because it takes soooo long for the story to progress and when it finally does 5 eps later it stops again... It's pretty much an anime with A LOT of fillers.

BUT He's my Avatar because I actually like the character lol

That's right I have zoids I should watch it again. It was definitely one of the best shows around when I was young. Every season had like kinda the same zoid but slightly different and all the series were awesome.

Started watching Shinzo again (really enjoyed that when I was young) but atm it seems kinda dated.

Has anyone seen Kaiba?
It's by Masaaki Yuasa http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1482702/ (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1482702/) who also directed the Kemonozume and the movie Mind Game.
Kaiba has a really clever storyline and trippy, fluid animation. One of the best things I've seen in years.

oh bro, sounds even worse than the manga. that took like 60 chapters to get anywhere :/

youd think a fighting shounen about the mafia and people with flame powers would be more awesome.

Holy shit, Shinzo. Is that the one where there's those three guys, and the main one has fire powers, the kinda girly dude has water powers and the lion dude has lightning powers? Or was it earth... Is that the one? That one was the shit. You should give me Zoids and Shinzo next time we're both at ranbats or something Mason
Title: Re: All things Anime
Post by: massi4h on January 25, 2011, 04:15:56 PM
Yeah man that's the one. Then when they defeat the enemies they turn into cards and then you can suck them in and transform with their power. Only got both in English cause apparently Japanese Shinzo is like impossible to find. I think I'll watch Medabots as well, that was awesome when I was a kid.

But yeah I won't be at the first ranbats but I should be able to make the rest.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Mafia > Ninjas, Pirates, Shinigami/Samurais and Mages. Too bad it ended up being KHR < Naruto, One Piece, Bleach and Fairy Tail  :-[

Hahaha @Shinzo. A few days ago I remembered that Anime but I couldn't remember the name of it and it was fucking annoying the hell outta me. Shot Mason, I can finally rest easy  ;D

Gyo is the longest one of his that I've read and it's fuckin great http://www.onemanga.com/Gyo/ (http://www.onemanga.com/Gyo/)

Try one of his short stories first maybe and see if you like it. this one is a little weird and unsettling

Yeah I've been watching it since it came out.
It's so good now. It's gone from 300 episodes down to 100, and it flows really quickly with good stuff happening every episode. I think by like episode 30, Frieza is dead. Big difference from the torture of the version that used to be repeated over and over on TV3.
Title: Re: All things Anime
Post by: Nick4now on February 03, 2011, 12:54:31 PM
Fucking aye. I remember Frieza telling Goku that Planet Namek is going to explode in 5 minutes but that took like at least 5 eps to actually happen. Dragged on waaaaaaaaaaay too long  >:(

Not watching it but vegeta says it's over 8000...  ??? ??? ???

I've got all of GT and I think DB, I watched the last 10 episodes recently for nostalgia and omg it was the same damn fight every episode. Good times.

Also I think I'll watch this lol though cbf watching the other 7 or so series:

Anyone can recommend something else similar to Monster?

I tried to watch some of the anime but because I started reading it I have them in my head as if they were german speaking and not Japanese.

I tried watching the new xmen anime with my dad. We start watching and they start speaking Japanese. It just felt way too awkward. Characters weren't really acting like we're used to as well. Wolverine wasn't very awesome. Plot was kinda crap, so we dropped it. Anyone else watching it, or watched the Wolverine and Iron Man ones?

Man I hate the feeling I get when I finish a really good anime. It's like, what the fuck do I do with my life now? I always finish them in like, 2-3 nights on average which is way too fast to enjoy it. Though I never finished School Rumble, and I'm about to finish the second season after it being like 4 years since I saw my first episode. I think there's a third season though so I might try to find that.

I got some much anime to watch. I just finished watching Tsubasa Chronicles but they stopped making more eps for the anime so I need to read the manga.
Title: Re: All things Anime
Post by: stereomonkey on April 26, 2011, 06:27:24 PM
Yeah, that anime was horrible.  Stopped watching after a couple of episodes and read the entire manga instead.  So many volumes to go through but really worthwhile in the end.

I thought watching anime will be good but I think I find it more fun reading the manga instead.

Fuck you Stu, Tsubasa was awesome. It's got Sakura and Syaoran. OVAs were real good and that's where most of the story from the manga gets put in. Still reading through it though. Getting it out from the library cause it feels nicer to read. Manga is good so far.

Nah Tsubasa is Shonen version of CCS based more around Syaoran I guess (yeah I know most of the spoilers and stuff, but don't ruin it for me please :D)

I watched all of xxxholic including the ova that just came out to end it. There are heaps of gaps I wanna fill in but I didn't really enjoy the characters enough to want to read the manga. Zashiki-warashi was the best looking female character in the anime and I wanted to see her get somewhere with Watanuki. And then bam the first ova comes around and she's not in it anymore and Yuuko dies straight away and then she says "I'm back" through the girl in the end of the first ova and then nothing comes from it.

The ending didn't seem like much of an ending either (coulda been better in the manga), seemed more of a we're tired of this series now lets just end it.
