What do we lowly PS3 users do about sticks, seeing as the X360 doesn't allow us to use our perfectly standard USB devices ?

Curse the day you bought a ps3, and dual mod your sticks.

Pity it's Xbox only. Oh well.
What's the big deal as long as there are sticks there that we can use I don't see it really makes a difference.
Just means I can't use either of my sticks but as long as there are some Xbox TE's to use I'll be happy.

its all teh same, TE is still a TE doesnt matter if its xbox or ps3.
the reason its on xbox is because of teh monitors Giga has which causes delay for the PS3, so xbox are the better choice of teh 2.

Basically we are using XBOX360 due to the fact that they provide a far less laggy gaming experience with the hardware that we currently have.

Please guys make sure you sort out your stick issues as soon as you can.  Although you can ask to use someone elses stick, if possible in a tournament you REALLY should be using your own, as you dont want to be messing shit up mid game.

Couple of options are:

Dual mod.  The following PCB would be pretty easy to dual mod any stick with, and with NZs dollar like it is atm, shouldnt be too bad http://www.etokki.com/Joytron%20Paewang%20Revolution%20PCB%20Only

For PS2 sticks, a converter: http://www.etokki.com/Joytron%20Paewang%20Revolution%20PCB%20Only
This converter has been tested by Laugh and Markman and found to be lag free.  That converter plus a second hand 360 pad off trade me shouldnt set you back more than a hundred bucks.

If you guys are asked to play, and you dont have a stick handy... you will likely have to use the Giga sticks, which are okay i guess, but the button layout is a bit bolo.

TBH, I would much rather use PS3, as there are far more sticks floating around for it, but alas we are in a situation where that option is not feasible.

For the PS2 games... (only SF3:3S atm) I will have two namco sticks available for use.  Once again though bringing your own if you have one will likely be the best option.

On another note keep this thread spam free.  Its will be a useful spot for Q & A regarding the tourney, and having thirty odd pages of inane crap will make trying to find info for genuinely interested people difficult.

I'm not trying to stir shit or spam here but for a $40+ entry fee that most of us will pay I would expect the bare minimum of consistent equipment to be sorted by the event not the people attending, anything else just seems unprofessional. By consistent I mean at least two sticks that are the same not one person gets a Giga stick and one gets a TE if they're lucky.
It's just frustrating because I have 2 PS3 sticks that I would happily contribute but I can't because of the chosen platform. I already have 3 non NZism regulars psyched about this that own no stick whatsoever but they play semi regularly at my house using my PS3 sticks.

I say this because we are trying to attract newcomers and to be honest a non regular will turn up to the tournament expecting the bare minimum of equipment to be provided and for it to be consistent. It seems elitist and uneven footing for newcomers if a bunch of people are walking around with their TE's and then when it's their turn (possibly their first tourney game) they get handed obviously inferior equipment to use.

Once again not trying to stir, I'm just putting it out there if we're trying to look professional. Although in saying that I am totally for a no pads rule ;)

I expect you to to let me use your stick(s) anyway Lenny haha. Plus I need you to come over and fix my Namco so we can have a jam on CvS2 ;D

Probably 40% of my time at the last nats was trying to sort out which consoles which people could play on due to a mix of people wanting to play only on ps3s or xboxes due to their favoured stick. I think I did a pretty fucking good job but there is no way I want to do it again.

While it would be preferable to use ps3s due to available equipment, the lack of other venues combined with the tvs at GIGA makes it not possible.

As for the 'seeming professional' thing, there is no way we can be professional with 0 budget. We can only hope to be as close as possible.

I think a lot of you are asking far more from our community than is currently possible. If you can do a better job, feel free. As you may have noticed I'm rapidly losing enthusiasm for spending so much of my time and money trying to do the best I can.

Yeah I know Graeme... (or is it Graham?)

Its sort of a rock and a hard place issue atm.  We are going to have to run at least 3 setups to make this work.  And asking someone to give us thier TE stick to let complete strangers use is a big ask.  Also justifying NZism using the tourney money to buy 6 TE sticks is really difficult.

TBH with you graham, for a person that is new to the game, using the Giga sticks will be fine.  They have sanwa parts and to refer to them as the less than the bare minimum is probably not an apt description, its just that for some of us that have been spoiled with HRAP's and TE's we may find it difficult.

I'm not demanding people go buy another stick, or dual mod their own one.  If you sort out with someone to use their stick that is fine.  I am merely asking that people do it sooner, rather than be called for a match and have to wander around asking people for a stick, cause this event is going to be a nightmare to run.

I know you aren't stirring Graham (or Graeme), and these questions need to be answered.  Also you may use my stick, but be warned I may have to manipulate the bracket so that we face off, so that I can lame you out with Sim again :) and before the match I will quite happily hand you a Giga stick to use, with possibly the largest smile on my face ever to grace a handsome young Maori boy.

Well my TE will be up for use and I'm sure others will lend theirs out as well. I do really only wanna let people I already know use my stick, cause random mashers will come up now and then.

Alan, I totally understand I'm REALLY not trying to be a dick. I've flushed a bit of my own money down the toilet organising Hardcore shows with no thanks whatsoever (except from the bands). We had a nightmare with the Shai Hulud tour especially after some fuck stole some of their equipment. I know what's involved in organising an event of any size and trying to keep everyone happy.

I'm just trying to look at it from more than one perspective. It's hard to tell people you have 0 budget when a lot of people will be paying $40+ to enter, they will wonder why the organisers can't provide the bare minimum of equipment for a $40 entry fee which lets face it is a bit of money to some people.

In my opinion we should just have the same two TE sticks plugged in for the whole day so everyone is using the same gear and surely this would solve the problem of setting up/changing over sticks and doing button checks all day. If we were running this on arcade machines then nobody would be able to complain about how they want to use their super special stick anyway. This gives everyone an even footing. Of course I don't know if you guys are planning on running more than one game at a time. Obviously the PS2 games are a different story anyway but if Lenny can fix my Namco I'm happy to volunteer it for the whole day.

As usual I'm happy to help out in any way possible and help you save money where I can (I'll be printing you guys posters for free etc prob including a couple of A1s or A0s if I'm nice to my boss).

I'm not trying to argue or run anyone down I'm honestly just trying to help and put forward what I consider are genuine concerns.

If my post is considered spam then feel free to delete it.

Ok so how many people will be happy with no prize money at all then? Because taking out venue hire fee that's all that's left. The last couple of events I've run I paid the venue fee personally to make the pot more attractive. As I said, I don't get enough of a good feeling from this community anymore to want to continue that.

And $5 per entrant as pot is not very large even as it is. Honestly, there's no money sloshing around here.
Title: Re: NZism Proudly Presents - NZ Fighting Game Nationals 2010
Post by: geneterror on April 23, 2010, 11:33:40 AM
Fuck I never thought or said there is any money sloshing going on around here. Like I said I know a lot of people involved in organising shows etc and we regularly pay money out of our own pockets to organise shows over here to get to see international bands we wouldn't normally get a chance to see. Trust me I know how hard it is to find cheap all ages venues and how much they cost etc.

My concern was just trying to get an equal footing for everyone.

Alan, some of us are extremely grateful for giving us this site and this tournament even if you're not feeling the love from everyone I'll give you a big hug next time I see you, or slap some sense into you whatever you want ;)

Anyway it seems to be covered so I'll just crawl back in my hole and get back to designing the poster :'(

I'm sorry if I sound aggressive or whatever, I do understand where you're coming from. And where everyone else is coming from too, believe it or not. That's part of the problem, because there is really no way to make everyone happy (least of all me due to that!)

I guess people just have to trust that we really are doing the best we can. It may not seem like it to many people, that some issues are getting overlooked (lag, platform, whatever), but I assure you all we DO know the issues and DO appreciate what they mean. Sometimes when you propose you just kneel in shit I guess.

just a suggestion.
we can use the PS3 if:

Get LCD monitors which are 20-26 inch wih game mode and low ms, I'm sure many of us have one sitting at home including myself. Using HDMI with SF4 currently I do not feel any lag or use a HDMI to VGA? but correct me if I am wrong :)

And Alan\ Lenny is right about the cost, its very expensive... not to mention having to beg people to lend their sticks out.
Its a Pain but we have no choice.

Organising a tourney is pretty difficult and it's impossible to please everyone. Ages ago I used to play QW/Q3 and helped run some online tournaments some of the shit that I had to put up with was so retarded, agitating and frustrating. I dread to think what having to organise a live event is like.

Graeme, or any of the nzism guys can use my stick if they want. :o

Thanks for that Alan, me and my fuckin' double spring modded SE. Setting up my matches must have been a nightmare. ;) The second spring has been removed now thankfully :)

Maybe make a stick Donation thread or just update the original post with guys that are willing to lend their 360/PS2 stick.
That way at least you'd get an idea of numbers when it comes to gear and what not so you know how many setups you have to fall back on just in case.

With money this tight you probably couldn't give the stick donators something back, like free entry to one game. They'll just have to be paid in warm fuzzies.  :)

Also is running 3S on Emu too dodgy? That way you could just plug in pretty much any stick if you got the right drivers. The numbers for 3S might make this a non issue.

Isn't Giga completely choca with LCD Monitors already? Are most of them DVI compatible? also they'll have speakers too right which you could hook up to PS3s with a cheap cable (5 bucks or less). You guys have probably thought of this option.

I'm gutted I'll be still overseas when this is on  :'( But if you guys need any help from my end feel free to holla out. I'll try and sus out something to send the south islands best if I have time before I head off.

Shame I can't do some Pavement art outside Giga from here to promote the event. Wish there was a stream I could watch from Hamburg. Will just have to settle for match footage :) Also anyone filming, shoot the event and setup. It's cool to get an idea of turnout and shenanigans.

Is it a regulation to use all of the games on GIGAs LCD? I mean I'm sure someone (Ben) wouldn't mind bringing a CRT solely for the 3s setup. I can bring my monitor and we can have that dedicated to Marvel or HDR or SSF4 or Tekken if you want. With the right cables we could get it projected onto the projector so the players can use the monitor to play and specs can watch the projector.

I actually don't know how you plan to run it, if all the tournaments will be done simultaneously or 1 after another. But for the smaller tournaments I'm sure if they run the whole time they can have their own dedicated setup and I'm sure if the games are different it should be fine having a different type of setup for those specific games. But any 1 game should all have similar setups (if you're gonna do 3 ssf4 setups then I guess they better be the 3 GIGA screens).

Just throwing ideas out there, I'm not bagging any plans you guys have.

Just my 2cents.

We seem to be basing PS3's being unusable on giga's monitors around the 2v2 tourny which took place earlier this year.
That was PS3's connected using the HDMI port.

As far as I am aware we have not run another test with the PS3's connecting using component, and I suspect that could vastly help with the input delay.

Also, as mentioned above just because they have big screens doesn't mean we need to use them, you guys could easily get 5+ people to donate 20 - 26" lag free LCD screens.

This is just food for thought, I am happy with X360 or PS3, since I can use Mason's TE.
But if hardware is going to be a problem and switching to PS3 could help, it could be a good idea to switch platform.

Personally have 2 full Sanwa PS3 sticks which could be communal.

Good Luck!

EDIT: Also guys, please don't be put off due to which console you prefer.  This is a tournament that is for you guys to show off how much you have learned and where you stand in NZ.  If we were as established as SRK and said "it's on this console" i'm sure everybody would go "lets go!".  So lets stop looking for things to complain about and start practicing on our games and our weakness in our preferred game.

Basically, this is the time to level up! :)

Are these prices for domestic or international? I'm looking to book my tickets soon (unless there are sales I should look out for?) and wondering who I should be booking with (read: cheap).

Hi Toxy, tbh the prize money will very much depend on the amount of people entering each tournament, so unfortunately it will be very difficult to guage what the final prize money will be for each tournament.

BTW, thanks for the hiding you gave last night online haha.

Hey Lenny. I think this is the one problem we have at the moment. I think if we could set an amount for prizes it would be good for advertising and actually make more people come. I know that this makes things a lot more difficult and all but ideally if we could advertise at least the prizes we might get peeps from Oz flying over.

Realistically, whatever prize money we put up probably isn't going to be a big enough pot to entice them to come over. Our scene is A LOT smaller than theirs, and as such, so are our prizes.

It also doesn't help when it is based on the amount of people signing up to tournaments.  This is the reason for the pre-registrations thread so we can kinda get a rough estimation on what the prize sums will be a month before the nats is on.  Unless you want to put up a total lump sum to say this is the winnings then it's not going to happen.

Also guys, keep it in your pants yeah.  No need to explode all over your keyboards :P

I too would agree on having Marvel on DC but if that is going to happen we need to have sticks that are actually good.  If you can find 4 perfect working sticks with no problems with those sticks then we can think about it.  Otherwise it is the xbox version.

Title: Re: NZism Proudly Presents - NZ Fighting Game Nationals 2010
Post by: Lennysaurus on May 15, 2010, 12:51:28 AM
Hiya guys,

My issue with using a DC for marvel is twofold:

Firstly, we need at least 4 good quality sticks.  No disrespect to Joe, but I think that his sticks felt a little weird when I went to his place, it felt a little a though have been broken in alot and felt a little odd.  The reason we need 4 is so that if a couple putter out we have backups.  If this can be accomodated I am more than happy to change the marvel tourney to DC.

Secondly, given that everyon has access to the PS3 and XBO360 versions, I thought at least people can practice with those versions and get used to the changes.

I welcome any and all feedback and possible solutions to this issue.

Also, I spoke to him last night, and just want to acknowledge the help that Rorooze has provided, and will be offering with regards running the tourney and setting up/checking hardware with me.  Give him a pat on the back next time you see them guys.  Ditto for Alan and Stu as well.  It's alot of work so make sure you guys acknowledge the work these dudes are putting in when you see them.

Also bigups to Marc for helping with prizes.  I'll PM you the adress to send them to me.  Jack and Fong have offered to take the Shirts over to OZ APAC and have them signed by Daigo.

Also, I am thinking of running some polls on the forums.  Our happy little community has been having some hard times recently, and I think we need to remind each other that we are all here to have fun.  So I'm gonna set up some categories for you guys to vote on.  E.G.:  Funniest Poster, Most Helpful Poster, Best Troll etc etc.  You guys can vote and nominate on who you think should fit this the best, and whoever is winning by the time nats comes around will receive prizes!  Waddya think?

Hi guys,

A friend of mine told me about this tournament. Am pretty keen, just have a few questions about it...

Does the MvC2 tournament start on Saturday and end on Sunday? I won't be able to make Saturday but I can make Sunday so just wondering if I'll miss out.

Also I see the Dreamcast vs Other consoles for MvC2 debate... I've got a Dreamcast with VGA out as well as 1x Dreamcast Arcade stick (like the one below). Not sure if its a good one or not but if it'll help then sweet as.

P.S. If there is anyone in the South Auckland area wanting a bit of MvC2 practice flick me a PM... I used to play at Yifans a lot (got taught by a Maori guy with black shades named Joe), as well as Hunters Plaza (when Hai was managing there) so I might not be great but I'll be a good practice partner.

Welcome to the site bro.

Yea it does start on Saturday, and the Finals are on Sunday unfortunately.

Joe still plays haha. He is 'Joekage' on these forums. Even if you cant make the saturday, you should roll up on the sunday for a while anyway. Im sure you would get some good casuals in with everyone at some point.

Just bear in mind that its not until August. Shitloads of time to make a decision. Its always good to meet everyone even if youre not competing. (It sounds like your even more of an OG marvel player than half of us anyway lol)

Rorooze is bringing some equipment to ranbats this week that we can use to check lag on the setups.  So basically we are gonna check the tv's and the monitors at giga and get the readings for each of them using different cables etc.  When we know what our best option is we will move forward with that from now on.

I'll send the shirts off this week. Getting them signed by Daigo is a brilliant idea! Good thinking! Make sure someone contacts the Ozhadou crew so they can get a meeting setup up for signage.  A bit jealous now  ;)

Ryu t-shirts signed by Daigo! Legendary!

Hopefully the NZism FGC DVD comes to light or even a torrent download of it. I'd be really keen to see it since I can't be there :'(  Make sure you some interviews and tour of Giga with all the setup while it's packed.

This was just about the most homoerotic thing ive read on this forum. And given all the conversations that degenerate into the topic of lennys wang, i think that is really saying something.

1. Andy comes up and shake Daigo's hand.
2. Jack "teleport" behind Daigo & Activate "raging demon" mode.
3. Using the spanner, Jack hit Daigo's hand as hard as he can.
4. Jack, Fong & Andy have to do Dan's Super Taunt at the same time before running away from the scene.

I definitely notice the difference on HDMi tbh andy.  I have actually found some info on SRK about that particular brand, and have found what they reccomend are the "optimal" settings for the TV's there.  TBH the testing is so that we will have actual numbers rather than half the peeps going, "um... feels laggy" and the other half saying "feels good to me!", cause tbh no matter what setup we use we get differing opinions.

I basically just want to be able to point to a setup and say "Hey, we tested it and this setup lags X amount, so we can/can't use it."

Was it with the Paewang pcb or a cthulu/toodles?  I wanna know if the paewangs are fine since I'm thinking of getting two of them+case and modding them for the nationals.

I actually had a PS3 TE S and modded it with a 360 Fightpad - it was relatively simple

I'm pretty sure zosla has had hands on experience with the Paewang Revo pcb, but for what it's worth, they look boss - I was going to buy one until I got my Fightpad on special from MightyApe

Unless you have some sort of hookup, the Chimp is cheaper, but yeah its more expensive, and is only a real option for peeps with 360 sticks that have a CG PCB.

I only had one ocasion where I had problems but now I know why, because someone press the turbo on...  but yeah apart from that nothing has gone wrong.

with the Chimp board, I've notice that they shut one of the boards down sometimes. Like the oneFong and Jack has, it tends to shut itself off automatically and fail to work at all and have to turn off and on again?

That sounds like a potential static issue to me.

I know i tend to blame everything on static, but static really is a bitch. Especially in TE sticks. Grounding the plates seems to have sorted it out for me. Im a few months in after i did it and im no longer having the issues i was having.

Might be worth a shot. Might not.

I played with Andy's stick at the last ranbats on xbox and didn't notice any input delay or difference in input delay between that and Lenny's SE. Paewang seems pretty good.

My TE's still under warranty so I'm still a bit worried about modding it.

I wouldn't be too quick to blame the cthulu for that, that's likely to be a TE pcb problem.

However Fong's cthulu was pretty roughly treated so it's possible there's something wrong with that instance of it, the cthulu itself is perfectly solid though.

Back on topic, Evo has changed their stance on Ultra switching in SSF4 - now the winner CAN switch, but must select their ultra BEFORE the loser picks their ultra. Double blind still covers both character and ultra.

Probably a good time for people to start reading over the various rules and bringing up any issues they may have, btw.

Sounds like a good idea - some characters have match ups where one ultra is highly preferred - although I do understand the reasoning behind their original decision too

Glad they added that, still think the original double blind should first be character, then ultra. It makes people scared to choose say Chun Li, then pick U2 and end up fighting Ryu.

I agree that Ultra should be able to be changed as this was Capcom's intention for being able to select the Ultra when the other player's character choice was visible.

I have to agree with Mason and smoof on that point.

I just think that the match should have both players in the most advantageous situation possible depending on the matchup that was decided in the blind select. Which would mean you should be able to choose your ultra upon seeing your opponents character choice.

So the last 3v3 was pretty cramped. Had to get out of the building a number of times due to stuffiness. Also it was really hard getting through that bottleneck by where the games were played before the big screen set up. Is their anyway Giga can be paid to move that big circle of tables in the middle? Paid money I mean. Otherwise maybe advertising for the nationals is not such a good idea if the venue can't accommodate for all the people there.
Title: Re: NZism Proudly Presents - NZ Fighting Game Nationals 2010
Post by: Rorooze on August 03, 2010, 08:12:02 AM
That circle has like 12+ PC's all earning decent $$ per hour so they won't move it for a 3v3 tournament.

IIRC for nationals we've got that whole space, so no worries.
Title: Re: NZism Proudly Presents - NZ Fighting Game Nationals 2010
Post by: zos'la on August 03, 2010, 09:14:05 AM
The only reason it was cramped was because we had a clash with a DOTA tournament on the same day which they used those pc in the circle.
If Lenny wanted to, he could talk to the owner and sort things out a bit with spacing issues.

Lol tbh I am learning from experience.  It's not the easiest thing to do, but getting there slowly each time.

I have some ideas around spreading the setups around giga so as not to bottleneck the place too much, but unfortunately we will have to accept the fact that it will get cramped.  On the first day there will be 6 or 7 setups so we're gonna have to grit our teeth and bare it a little.

I also think we should divide the top players into different teams and random the rest. Otherwise, the probabilities for 2 good players be in the same team is fairly high and when that happens, the fun is ruined.

Regarding SSF4, if your taking the piss,.... Not cool. But if your not,... Doubt it. There is so many great players now i don't believe there could be any predictions that could be remotely precise.

It will go like this

Kevin
Simon
Jack
Fong
Andy
Weazzy
Hydro
Hue
Rumble or whoever the best Guile is
Skullator

Then will be hard to decide

Rufus guy ( Asian guy don't know his name)
Ibuki guy (think it's Cody)
Some Asian guy i don't know
then Mason or Lenny

I think there might be some names in there i don't know yet. One of Andy's,Simon's or Hue's mates probably.

That's the list, there will be some a bit mixed in there on the day. But that's what i think, sorry if i pissed some people off i'm just being honest cos CMob asked so yeah......

You don't gamble but you pay entry fees to go into tournament prize pools?
Gambling involves luck and not being able to influence an outcome directly.
Think of it as a two man tourney with a large entry fee/prize pool.

Side bets are what makes a money match hype. If everyone who was so keen to start a money match between other people was willing to put like $20 down we'd have like a $500 mm in no time. More productive than everyone going MONEY MATCH

Side bets help, but the trash talk is what makes it really hype imo. The angrier the two people get at each other, the more pride is on the line, and so the more crushing the defeat is.

The worse the outcome is for the loser is what makes the hype, be it money wise or reputation wise. Need more shittalking imo.

The main problem is that there are a bunch of cheerleaders on the sidelines going "yeah yeah money match do it" in tiny girly voices.

A good money match is made when two people actually diss each OTHER to the point they want to money match, rather than having a bunch of pussies trying to goad them into one. It's pretty sad to watch actually.

Andy called Weazzy a scrub. Weazzy has retorted by calling Andy a scrub. How the fuck else is this gonna get resolved without ACTUALLY playing? Maybe money doesnt HAVE to be on the line, but it sure as hell makes it more interesting. If people want to see people play off to prove a point, then why the hell wouldnt they suggest a money match? It adds urgency to their games, and makes every little slip up count even more. I get where youre coming from bro, but you didn't get to experience the hype of me vs skull, or smoof vs buda, which is a shame. I honestly believe it would change your outlook considerably. Ive never been so on edge, or enjoyed a game as much as that, and i havent ever seen the crowd that animated. The money matches have been really fucking awesome experiences, which is why people are crying out for more.

I said before it needs more trash talk. And shit here hasnt quite escalated far enough TBH. But honestly, peoples bloodlust at this point is pretty justified. The MM hype strikes me as being very drug-like. The first one was really really awesome, so people are going to be after that experience again. And theres nothing wrong with that. In Alan's defence though, It is getting to the point where upon seeing a small spark of conflict, the money match cries are going out. I think if people REALLY want to start seeing GOOD money matches, we need to just let conflicts escalate before crying out for them to be settled in some sort of fight.

Yea fair points made by all.
Let's just let the sands of time flow, eventually worthy beef will rise and MM3 will be in the making no questions asked.

I'm sure people are just eager to make sure SOMETHING comes up before nats tho yea ;D With everyone together at the one event we can't afford to miss out on those hype levels, because as Bill mentioned already the atomosphere surrounding the MM's has been completely unmatched by anything else I've ever seen.
I seriously lost my voice at Buda vs Smoof the other day, every single combo people were yelling top of their lungs hahaha.

But yea, this topic got cluttered with MM talk haha

Let's try get this thread back on topic then...

Anyone here have any goals they're looking to attain ? Besides the obvious "I want to win", I think it'd be kinda interesting to see whether anyone has some personal goals for this years Nats.

I have a few:

Have better wins than losses (at least 3-2)
Be able to adjust to the set up quickly
Beat any Chun's I come up against (Skullator eliminated me at last years nats)

And more optimistically:

Top 8 finish

Some of you may scoff at those goals seeing as I almost exclusively play online, but I want it - so fuck you all :D

And i just want Andy to come something over 30.

My placing doesnt bother me too much, but i would like to not drop my pressure like i have been at the last couple of ranbats. Admittedly, that just means i need to play more on the setup, and is just a slightly more specific version of what weazzy wants.

Its been THE major component of all my losses in the last few ranbats/tourneys, and its hindering me a lot. Ive had to go back to splash mountain, which against the players ive lost to (Hydro in particular) it just doesnt work. Its been restricting my game to one dimensional crap, and im not particularly happy about it tbh, especially given that thats not how i play. Its a flaw i need to beat out of me if i am to be even remotely succesful. Ill be putting a fair bit of time in offline over the next week or 2 trying to suss out my strings and re evaluating my spacing. It SHOULD in theory, not only negate the loss of inputs etc due to the 'no lag' factor, but also allow me to play a safer game overall.

Im hoping that will allow for some more interesting matches with people who have a playstyle that i have trouble with. Fong, Hydro, Andy and Guile Guy are my four biggest hurdles this year for that reason, and a major goal of mine would be to take a match from one of those four. Not sure how realistic it is at this point, but i figure - Aim for the stars, land on the treetops.

And If i lose to a random scrub again because i overthink the match, ill be really really fucking annoyed at myself.

FYI, I have never come anywhere below top 5 in NZ tournaments, unlike you Mr 37th or was it 47th?....but nice try.

back on topic,
This years Nationals will be a big suprize to many as I said before, the skill lvl of many players have risen up and the top players from last year will have plenty of hard time against many newer upcomings. I wish you all the best with your goals :)

I will try to squeeze some time in to practice a bit more before the nationals and hopefully I don't do too bad^^ !

All of this can be settled by STARTING YOUR OWN MONEY MATCH. Out of all the people in this thread going "MONEY MATCH! MONEY MATCH!" two people have been willing to have their own mm. Yes it was hype, yes I enjoyed it but right now all I see is a bunch of people who don't have enough balls to start their own mm because they're not confident in their own skills. If people want to see a money match, start your own, otherwise don't talk until the mm has actually started. We don't need conflict for hype either. A smoof vs UMEHALA vs U-MANDIZLE of Puke vs BIRRY WONG battle royale many games match would be fucking hype whether it involved money or not.

Yeah there's no way I'd have the confidence to start my own money match. I would just look like a dick if I lost and I would probably lose because of the pressure. Why would I want to throw my money away? I would also never gamble on a money match as you can never tell who will win. The reason I taunted the Andy vs Weazy one in particular is because of the excuses being made. Why not just say I don't want to play because I'm not sure if I would win?

My point is that the Andy x Weazzy mm wasn't even going to be an mm until someone else said it. It's ok to go around trying to start a money match if you're willing to have one yourself, it's also all good to get hype over an mm that is going to be in progress. Starting an mm between people who aren't yourself is kinda stink imo, no matter what the reasoning.

Post by: Lennysaurus on August 10, 2010, 03:41:32 PM
Okay guys, I have been getting a few queries on how money will be paid out at the nationals so I am making this post to clear a few things up.

Before you read further though, you guys need to appreciate that this event is not about getting "phat" payouts for the top 3 in a game.  Id you are coming to win a massive prize then you need to re-evaluate whether or not you should come at all.  We are a small community, with little or no ability to get big sponsors.  The  reality is that if you're in our community at the moment, you're doing it for the love of it, not fame, female/male companionship, or money.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Initial Cost for entering the tourney is $15-00.  Each game an entrant wishes to enter will infer an additional cost of $5-00. (Hence the $20-00 entry fee and and extra $5-00 per each extra game someone wants to enter)

All tournament registration fee's ($15-00) will be pooled together.  Out of this cost will come hiring of the facility for the two day event.  Left over money will be distributed to the prize pot for each game in the following fashion.

(Number of entrants in the game) / (The sum of the number of entrants in all games) x 100.

The above equation will give a percentage amount, of which that percentage will be put aside for the prize pot of that particular game.  For example:

If Street Fighter III Third strike has 22 entrants and there are 144 entrants in all games then,
22/144 x 100 = 15.28%

Therefore 15.28% percent of the money left over after costs will be contributed towards the Street Fighter III Third strike  tournaments prize pot.

Furthermore, each $5-00 tournament fee for each game will also contribute to that games pot.

After calculation of the prize pot has been completed for each game, the pot will be distributed  to the tops 3 places of the tournament in the following manner:

First place will receive 60% of the prize pot for that game
Second place will receive 30% of the prize pot for that game
Third place will receive 10% of the prize pot for that game
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So that's how the money will be split up.  If you're even half decent with your math's you will realize that the pots aren't going to be huge.  And that placing top in a game isn't exactly going to sort your rent out for the next couple of weeks.

In the end if you are coming to NZism tournaments at the moment to take the prize money then you should probably start learning to play something else.  I hope that one day we can throw events where people come from far and wide due to the massive amounts of prizes and prize money we will have, but this years nationals certainly is not that.

BTW guys I did not post this up to get your opinion and feedback on the matter.  This is simply clearing up some misinformation that made its way to me.  I am not providing you with an opportunity to help me think of a better way, I am just letting you know that this is how it is going to happen.  If you have a problem with this your options are to either suck it up and come anyway, or stay home.

Just a few questions as I'm not sure whether they've been answered before

* Registration starts at 9am, what time will stuff be kicking off ? Will there be some time for warm ups so we can get used to the set ups ?
* How many set ups are there going to be and for which games ? I think I recall someone saying there will be 6-7 set ups... 1 set up for each game and then 2/3 for SSF4 ? Maybe this will depend on registration numbers
* How does the Saturday/Sunday thing work ? I may have asked before but I've forgotten lol - will Sunday be dedicated solely to finals/top 16/whatever ? Even if this means we over run on Saturday ?

Hey Lenny I've got 3 days off leading up to Nats to hang out with out of towners like Moose! etc. Any chance we can have a training session one day for the out of towners and myself to get used to the setups etc. I don't mind organising etc.
I'm sure they would appreciate some time on the setups etc. I only ask because I don't know if the monitor is a Giga monitor or if I have to arrange the moniter with someone else. I'm happy to put down $50 plus for hireage but I can't bring Xbox sticks only PS3 sticks.
Maybe I should make a seperate thread to arrange this if people are keen?

Giga is basically on the corner of Wakefield st and Lyndock St. Massive lit up sign. You cant miss it. The Tournament carpark is behind the Auckland International college, which i have marked. The entrance is on Airedale St, and is also really easy to see when you come down Lyndock St and turn left.

A quick question.  I see that 99% of the times (Sorry of that is wrong as this is based off the small amount of time I've been a member here) the tournaments are held using Xbox360s.  Is it because its easier?  Really only wondering as I am now a hopeless stick player and am a more competent pad user on the PS3.  I wouldn't mind entering some of these tournaments but usually get put off due to he fact its on the 360 and not the PS3.

Title: Re: NZism Proudly Presents - NZ Fighting Game Nationals 2010
Post by: stereomonkey on August 14, 2010, 05:43:55 AM
Main reason ROCOABC is due to lag on the PS3.  Xbox has ways of dealing with lag issues better than PS3.

Also, this is not an opening for a discussion about lag.  So don't start. (not directed at you rocoabc)

All 3 teachers in the show get with a student at some point, Sakura's best friend is lesbian to her and the main guy first thinks he's gay to the same guy who Sakura likes, who ends up being gay with her brother so they end up together. FYI if you intend to record the screen you don't really need to go hard out at 720p ... I typically do my recordings at WVGA @30fps and then I go one step better and compress it so I can upload more matches in the same amount of time.

But yeah if you got godlike uploads who cares  ::)

QuotePrice: $20-00 for entrants that register before July 30th 2010, $30-00 for people that register either on the day of the tournament or after July 30th.  This includes entry into the tournament, and one game.  Each subsequent game you enter will cost an additional $5-00.  All entry fees are to be paid on the day of the tournament.

Just in case people are confused.

I tend to just park in aotea - $8 the whole day on weekends. Not necessarily the cheapest I'm sure, just very convenient, but then I'm coming from a bit further away.

Top 16 ssf4

Jacksmash, Gankatron, Simonfish, massiah, Lenny (dhalsim), zosla (ryu), weazzy (bison), crazykiller (various?), crazymobius (dhalsim + blanka?), rob (balrog), skullator (chun), imagneto (bison), rumble (guile), heberetto (bison)

I can't remember the other two, was it hydro (rose) and karizzma (elf)?

HDR winners final is stereomonkey + kingpicollo, losers semi is imagneto vs nick4now???? I might be wrong on the loser semi though.

But after looking at the list that Rory made the other two that made it in were definitely Karizzma, and also Kevin.

Holy crap... so much awesomeness compacted into 2 days.  I’m at work at the moment so I’ll put a proper results thread up in the tournament results thread later on.  But there are a few things I want to say.

First off I have to make a huge apology to the guys that were affected by the stuff up in the bracket.  I will be having a look at the spreadsheets etc and trying to figure out why it happened so that I can pass it on to the next person to run something so that it doesn’t happen again.  In particular I want to apologise to Simon (Crazymobius) who was royally screwed by not being entered in the HDR tournament.  My tournament, my stuff up, I’ll be looking to make good by you in the future be assured.

Big apology to the MVC2 players.  I had said that it would be played on Dreamcast, but I stuffed up in estimating how long Third Strike was going to take.  So you guys ended up having to play the crappy XBOX360 version.  Once again really sorry guys.

So after the negative stuff I’d like to focus a little on the positives.  First up thanks heaps to the guys that brought stuff for everyone to use.  Without people you guys this wouldn’t have happened.  This includes people lending their consoles, sticks, VGA chords, etc etc...  In particular want to point out that Heb basically provided most of our filming stuff for the day, and he brought it from Sydney!!! WHAT A CHAMP!

Special thanks to Ben (TooMeke) for basically running the Third Strike tourney for us and dragging a big fucking TV to the venue to play on.

A suuuuuuuper massive thanks to Rory (Rorooze) for basically running the first day.  He is obviously gifted at this sort of thing and I’m sure that anything he runs is in good hands (hint hint).  In fact he is so good at it, that I was basically relegated to walking round and yelling at people hahahaha.

Thanks also to the guys that helped as well, with judging and other organising Ioane, Mason, Euan, Thomas, Bill, Fong, come to mind although I probably missed out a few.

Big ups to the guys that actually travelled far for the event!  The welly boys, Martin, Nick, Yang, Ioane, BBoy!!!  You guys are awesome, and it’s great to see the commitment you have!  Knowing that there are people travelling form so far to be there makes the event even more special.

Um some more shoutouts!!!

First Weazzey Mother Fucking EFFFF!!! Dude finally backed up a little of the shit that he is always talking on this forum.  Although you lost the money match to Andy, you played really well today, and every match you played was Hype!

The guys who played in all of the finals:  You guys made the event awesome to watch!!!  Sooo many awesome games with some crazy good play!

Simon and Kevin!!! Thanks for knocking me out of the damn tournament you rat bastards!!! Hahahahaha!!  But seriously I really enjoyed playing you guys, and it made me feel good to be at the point of a tournament where I get to go toe to toe with you both!!!  Same to you too Andy!!!

On that note, big shout outs to everyone that I played n the tourney!  I had heaps of fun, and really really enjoyed every single match!

Shout outs to the guys that came to the buffet on the Saturday night!!  Was awesomely epic!  I beasted those oysters hahahaha!  And OMFG Euan is a buffet monster, I swear to god!!  IIRC he had an entree, 3 big plates of mains, and 3 helpings of dessert.  I couldn’t fucking believe it!

Also another shout out to the guys that encouraged me and gave me support during before, and after my games.  Made me play better!

Shout outs to the Giga guy!!!  The dude behind the counter both days was pretty awesome!  He helped out with chords and stuff to the MAX!

And my last shout out is of course to everyone here at Nzism regardless of whether or not you were able to join in on the event!  This community is sooo awesome, and going to events like this and seeing that awesomeness makes everything worthwhile.  Thanks to this place I know that I have made some lifelong friends, which is something that in my opinion is woprth all the shit-talking, arguments over tiers, BIRRY WONG!!!! Banners, Weazzey/Andy shit talk, and pointless ranting that we endure in this place.

See you fools on the flipside.

P.S.:  I know I said I won’t be organising, but I think I may have something epic up my sleeves.  Will keep you guys posted!!!  HAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah was really an awesome event. I was gonna say Ben needs props for his input on the 3S part of the tourney. Was definitely a big highlight seeing the finals on the Big Screen. Simonfishe's Makoto juggles especially. And yeah awesome to see those Welly dudes make it all the way up for this. Good on Chuck especially for making the top 4.

My votes for MVPs go to Skullator - Amazing Chun and composure. All your matches were on point and some were even whitewashes. And also Weazey, yeah really impressed with your games throughout the weekend.

As for HDR was pretty pissed about that but I think that actually helped me in my other games but would have liked an opportunity to play that bloody slide->Throw loop Sim. Lol.

Fantastic event!

Firstly, my wholehearted thanks to Lenny especially, along with brother Ben and the crew for putting on the events. Props to everyone competing for making it a great show this year, that's two years running my brothers, most definitely looking forward hard to next year events!

Fantastic matches from the third strike tourney, especially the finals, delicious.

MVP: My brother Skullator, along with Rumble and the man himself Weazzyeff. You guys fully deserve your spots among the countries finest, and I'm very pleased to say that I picked you all doing very well this year. Doubters be silenced from now on, cause you can all back it up for real. :D Good shit.

Shout outs to Fong for some good banter and camaraderie ;)

Hope to catch up with all of you for some offline games sometime soon. Nothing tops that lagless set-up now!

. . . hmmm, anything else?

ggs to everyone !!
big thanks to the organizers especially Rorooze. I've just realized that he's a really cool guy ^_^ I was quite amazed that he didn't get frustrated from all the questions about the brackets & how it works.

Congratulation to Kevin & Simon for beasting everyone AGAIN lol..... and none of them have the game at home....... No matter how many times I watch Kevin plays, I'm always amazed by his skills considering he has the least training and experience in super sf4. And shout out to Kevin's wife for letting him joining the tournament. lol

Congratulation to Mason for winning the money match. It doesn't matter if you've improved a lot or I got worse, you are definitely better than me now. ^_^ and sorry Skull for no money match against u as i don't feel confident with my skills at this point. Maybe when i finish all my school work and industrial project and have time to practice a bit then i will MM u guys again ^_^

Congratulation to Robert for making to top 16. This was the first time that he joined a tournament and he managed to be 1 of the top 12 qualifiers. I believe he will be another Fong if he has more confident and keep on playing.

Sorry for all my C.Viper fans for no Viper actions in this tournament as I didn't get enough time to prepare for it due to the release of SC2 :P+ school work

Well, at least I have time to catch up with my school work & project now (i'm so far behind :( next week will be the toughest week ever). I won't say i quit SSF4 coz i know i can't ;D so I will just turn up and have some fun with u guys whenever we have another tournament.

p.s: shout out to imagneto for letting me torture his stick on Saturday.
your stick has been tested and approved by Cr8zyK1LL3r. It is indestructible now.

Pss: Bad luck to Fong and Jack, look like the brothers share the same destiny that they HAVE TO lose to the same person in the National tournament, you guys have a new enemy now :D. And Fong, I knew exactly what you were thinking while playing against Jack, tricky bastard. lol

Props to the organizers of the event!!!
Not often is this type of opportunity available down in Wellington...so when it does happen...ANYWHERE...I encourage everyone to try and make these types of events.
APAC NZ...was my first...and only 2 of us from Welly went aswell as Munta from Christchurch...off memory the rest was AKL.
This time around I feel like Welly was well represented and hopefully more of us can make it to more of these events in the future.

Once again I managed to take away some knowledge and examine new tactics. Unfortunately I didn't get time to put it all to the test... :P
Shout outs also to the guys I did play in the comp...

Once again another good weekend in Akl with some bad ass games to watch!!!

Congrats to Kevin... The sickest Gief ever. That wasn't a game...more like a performance!!!

Fav's to watch for me...

Nationals was really awesome. Thanks alot to everyone who helped organise, especially Lenny, Rory, Ben and Heb.

Giant GGs to Hue. The guy I could never beat since I first started the game. Our matches in the tournament and MM were both crazy intense and I really enjoyed playing with you. I thought picking Ryu was the right thing for you to do, I just never thought I'd actually beat your Ryu lol.

Also GGs to Moose in 3s. Well... I'm not gonna talk shit cause you're an awesome guy and you know heaps about 3s and I just spam bullshit, but ggs to all the games we had. Also Toots in our little $10 MM which I lost to your Dudley. Glad that you've finally learnt how to beat my shit consistently. Also GG to Chuckk who knocked me out in 3s.

The top level 3s was just amazing to watch at how high the skill level was. I really wish the Simon vs Frankie in the winner's bracket was recorded. Simon was a game and a round up, he knocked down frankie and gave him no health. Simon goes EX fireball xx super with ken and Frankie full parries the whole thing and comes back, then perfects the next round and wins the next game.

Big shout out to Simon and Kevin, the 2 beasts who run over everyone.

GGs to Weazzy, fuck you beat me and played really solid and then I lost to Andy pretty convincingly which he always seems to do against me. Nice work Skullator for top 8 and playing a really solid TOP TIER character :D Nice work to my buddy Scrib yesterday, hope you had a good time, sucks that you couldn't make it today but hope you finished your shit.

GGs to everyone I played in everything else. Especially Ioane in the Marvel, yay at me hitting you with a raging demon lol. And Heb as well, glad you two came all the way over here. Also good to meet Nick4Now, Martinizzle, Schweetness and everyone else on the weekend. And shot Rob for the crazy Boxer.

awesome comp fellas, every game was intense and hype

MVP for me is clearly either one of kevin, simon or weezzy. abel ultra 2 is gaaaaay but man simon's abel was on point the whole tournament, mind fucking with everyone and taking faces. and to kevin, i just don't know how you do it, not having as much practice or if any compared to everyone else and yet you again prove why your number1........oh yeah and your ability to adapt quickly and read shit.......is insane :o

to my nigger weezy, look what happens when you don't come drunk and stoned off your face.....you ripped shit up, going underfeated in the first day ;D sick bison bro

rookie of the year goes to Rob, i remember the day you were a noob at yifans, now look at you, top 12 in your first tournament. awesome stuff bro, you're footzies are good and your only gonna get better with experience.......... oh and screw you for knocking me out of the top 16 lol >:(

biggest highlight for me goes to 3rd strike, super was great but 3rd strike was a "holy fuck!!!!", every game in the finals was oh so crazzzzzzzy, kevin's urien, simons mak and frankie's alex - high level play before my very eyes :o

big shout outs to nick4now, martinnizzle and to the rest of the niggers who's names i don't bother to remember

p.s abel ultra suck balls :D

Pretty gutted I couldn't make today but university has to be the priority! Can't wait till it's all over in November :D Anyway, Saturday was pretty cool but I imagine all the hype was today! Few comments:

Firstly, Lenny, what a legend organising basically the entire event! Looked like you were pretty stressed when I came back from the T6 setups and thought I'd help with HDR a bit, didn't think it'd lead to running most of the brackets lol. Vocal chords are still pretty sore from all the shouting even though I got you to do a fair amount of it!

Stu, great working with you on the SSF4 brackets, was really easy with both of us working on it and having a decent view on all the setups! Shot on your placing in HDR as well!

Thanks to everyone who helped with sticks and being patient when we called a game then realised we had to change because their opponent was playing another game! Good to see people not messing around at button checks and getting on with the games. And thanks to anyone that helped me get people that were missing for their matches!

Great to put some XBL names to faces (fearlessnewbie, pinolicious) and the guys from out of town, moose!, nick4now (sweet juri btw) and heb (shot for coming from AU).

Scribble, I say it every time but we need to get some more games in! You no scare with Mak, good shit :D Hydro, I gotta learn how to punish rose, getting counter hit with c.mp way to much, good games nonetheless! Thanks to kururu also!

Hue, wish you played your Viper! Explaining how we had to run the brackets was fine, had the question from quite a few people! Next time it should be much easier to understand, we were just in a bit of a tricky position this year but I think it worked out well! I know how you feel about uni workload, hopefully when november comes round we can both get more games in.

GENETERROR! Thank you SO MUCH for those posters, not sure what happened to that e-mail but you did those in a short space of time and they came out pretty sweet! Not sure if you heard some of the comments from but I think the general consensus was they were awesome. Definitely need to get some laminated in the future, will be in touch about that another day :D

Time for bed I think, can't wait to see some of the vids :)

It cant be said enough but it was an awesome Nationals Tournament. Props to Lenny and others who organised it.

GG's to everyone I played: Euan, James, Lenny, Andy, Simon/Mobius, iMagneto, Rob, Jack and SimonFish.
I'll take my losses and learn from them and gaurantee that I'll come back stronger next year! (well, hoping to at least)

Such intense finals matches all round, the top 8 guys put on a great show. Congrats to them all. And shot Weazzy for reppin our 3v3 team 'Team NYC' haha. You were mean bro.

New to the NZ sf4 community this year and first Nats event. Definitely wont be my last  ;D

shout outs to everyone!

and p.s.

shout out to me for not eating Breathless  :P

One thing I forgot to tell people about breathless is that it has focus armour - focus breaks will break it. Not exactly an amazing way to deal with it, but something to experiment with if people are trying things out.

Otherwise, good tourney, worth the trip up to watch (3s at least lol).

Skullator and Weazzy are definitely the standouts for proving themselves. Great stuff guys!

edit: Oh, of course - nice to meet all you guys from remote regions.

And to simon & kevin - stop beasting! Especially simon - awesome competitor in all games he enters.

I definitely have to commend weazzy for how he played during the tourney. Pity he wasnt 100% for his money match with Andy. Id also like to give shoutouts to Rumble. All the games i watched that he played were awesome. Our top guys were on good form this weekend.

Additionally, im going to have to hit the hyperbolic time chamber and go into beast mode at the next event. (whatever it may be) Need to redeem for playing like ass in round one, and then being retardedly angry about it in round 2 and losing that as well. The white boy rage loses games.

Yahoooo!  Great weekend guys!

Shout outs to all you xbox fullas that done well.  Stink I didn't get to see the final top 8 matches but can't wait to see the bracket and stuff.

But awesome shout outs to Weazzey.  Make that PSN proud yo bolo :P  Held your composure and took it all the way.  Next event will be more hype now that you have mastered to not press the pause button.

Btw, who took the SSFIV brackets home?

I honestly didn't give a fuck about that MM tbh. I didn't even wanna do it after those bourbino's. Just giving the people what they want ay, except for a good match, didn't think about that part lol. I shouldn't have played it was tipsey bro, couldn't you tell!?

I'm not lucky, thats exactly where the weazal belongs. Once i get better at playing under pressure I will do much better. But i am pretty stoked at what i came.

5th equal with you, which is not so equal as you lost three times and I only lost twice.

edit: Anyway ggs

Weazzy,
Don't take it offensively, u did lose and we all knew the MM wasn't about the money but about proving something.
I proved it to you, I even went along with the first to 3 games when I was told other wise.
Other than that I compliment on you Bison for making that far, so take it easy. The nationals was for settling things, not to start more.

5th equal with you, which is not so equal as you lost three times and I only lost twice.

It dones't mean that you're teh better player. Any good player would know that if you lose one game and able to go to losers bracket and come back to the finals and beast it out is the better player ( Kevin ) as thats what he did in this tournament.
I did the same in Xlan against iMagneto, I had to beat him 2 sets as he was in winners bracket with 2 lives, but I made it through and finished it off, that is how you determine who is better which is the whole point of Double elimination.

This tournament I also did the same in teh qualifiers, Lenny beat me in the winners semi finals, i went to losers bracket and fought my way back up to him and took 2 sets of him coming 1st in my pool.

So in short, it doesnt matter if you lose one or two or three games, if you're a good enuff of a player you will fight your way back up. that what counts.

MM was a joke but oh well you won sweet as. Nothing can shit on my parade , i'm too happy. I'm not starting shit, you complement me by saying i got lucky for making it that far. Fuck you! I done better than you at nats anyway fool!

Besides did anyone else buy another set up to practice while the tournament was going on? LOL!

lol? if you're talking about when me and Hue were practicing? its because we both are too busy with RL stuff to even have ptime to practice.
Btw, I get to play at Giga for free if you haven't realize, unless its a big crowd then I would chip in my part, if it was just me and a few, I play for free.

Playing a Tournament/ MM or whatever, you need to prepare urself if you don't want  to be laugh at afterwards.
