Yea, but not as long as you think imo. Youve got to remember he has an uphill battle fighting almost EVERY character in the game. His whole game revolves around which person guesses right, and if I dont, then im toast.
I can execute everything that i need to at this point, what i need to work on now is playing safer, but keeping the pressure up. Fundamentally im expecting this to take me a while to master, given that a) Im not good at the fundamentals anyway, and b) neither is el fuerte as a character.
Retrospectively i think that even if i become the best el fuerte in the world, im still going to have the same amount of trouble beating you guys, which is why i was thinking about selling out and going for Ryu/Sagat.

Rufus is good, but has some pretty horrid matchups (Sagat, Ryu, Zangief come to mind... and who are you going to be facing?)

By all means pick up Ryu or Sagat and see how your learning curve goes.

NZ's SF4 low tier hero has spoken
to be honest I don't give a damn about the char being low or high tier. Just play with the char you are comfortable with and for me Ryu was my first char when i tried the game out and I like the play style of him. The tier thing never existed when the game first came out, all i knew was he was one of the original char from previous SF and would be wise to start from that.
I am learning Chun Li now and also Gief, not sure if they whatever tier but I enjoy using them and that is all it matters.

Playing a character which requires guessing correctly can be a bitch, but I think it's kinda half the fun... Abel is a bitch too, but I've stuck with him from the start just because I find him a better match to my actual play style than anyone else... Plus, he's a fucking big french bruiser... What else do you need ?
My fundamentals are also crappy, but I play on learning those with Ryu/Akuma at some point -- I just find them boring as characters to be honest. Although, 3 frame demons are pretty fuckin' sexy lol

I tried my ultra on his huga flame... was safe then i tried it on his long hands and it SEEMED safe... coz i didnt hit him, but i think i executed a bit late so would try again some other time when i get a chance but its all about trying out things and such.

I agree to an extent. Just remember what some people see as a 'fun' playstyle, others would see as a 'boring' playstyle. Its all a matter of opinion. Don't take all the 'ryu is boring' comments personally. Some people like him, some dont. Its the same with every character. Ryu just happens to be the scapegoat because he's so commonly used.

If youre referring more to the tier list discussion, remember that in all games there are always characters that have advantages/disadvantages against other characters. Yes, its more dependant on the player, But the character always effects how hard the player has to work for his wins. I get a lot more satisfaction winning with el fuerte than when i win with say, ken. Only because its been really REALLY fucking hard to win, so i feel more gratified at the end. That feeling is addictive, and is the reason why i keep playing el fuerte. Unfortunately, it means i have a bad habit of getting curbstomped by better players. :(

Exactly why i was looking at Ryu/Sagat. Id still like to 'main' Fuerte, but i would like to (in a pinch) have a stronger character under my belt. I was cranking Ken out for a while (Middle Tier, but a damn site better than Fuerte), but after playing Ryu a bit, im finding him considerably easier to do damage with. But dammit, i like the step kick.
Im also looking very seriously in the C.Viper/Seth/Rufus Direction. However Flux has a point on the rufus matches, and I cant play seth at yifans. And i feel i need to put a bit more time into viper, so i might sideline that idea for the time being, at least until after the tourney.
Viper's definite problem is stamina, it really does hurt a lot competitively to take more damage. She also has some ugly matches against almost all charge chars (especially Bison), although those are becoming easier once you learn them (it just HURTS to start with!). I think she has the potential to be one of the best chars though.
Obviously Seth is even worse, you literally have to play perfectly to stand a chance. I guess if you CAN, there aren't really any other chars that match him for options. Basically I just play him because he's fun, and I don't give a fuck because I'm honestly not going to get anywhere competitively anyway.
Rufus isn't that bad a choice tbh, but he's someone you'd really want a backup with to take care of those bad matchups. He has great comeback factor and damage output, fun combos and I think he's pretty fun to play as in general. But yeah, against the hard nuts guys at yifan's I'm not so sure.

Also, I was more implying that I find him boring to play AS in this game. It just feels like so much stuff is free for him.
My usual complaint is something like his AA DP, Ultra combo, which has a perfect analog in Viper's moveset, however with ryu you can just spam that shit out whenever you like and it's 95% guaranteed to hit. Try that with viper? Precise timing necessary to hit the ultra. Also it varies considerably with how high you hit them and also their character weight. I'm sure some Ryu player will jump in here and go "oh we have to deal with that too", but you just go and bloody try it with Viper and you'll see what I mean. To avoid any confusion (which would SOMEHOW have arisen), what flux means here i think, is if the AAdp hits, but the ultra misses. NOT if they jump over ryu's ultra, or block the dp.

If we had 6 or more months before the next tourney I'd say Viper for sure, but being someone who's pretty much played Her since December as my main character (Well over 2000 matches) I'd say two month's is not nearly long enough to get to a competitive level on Viper for nats Will, as much as I get all excited about the thought of Viper mirrors on the big screen at RVB.
I'd certainly suggest someone like boxer or sagat if you're looking for an easier level up to competitive viability.
I'm only just now getting to a place of feeling confident for the tournament, but still have lots of studying, training and match specific strats to get down before I get to the standard I'd like to be at to give one or two shoe-ins a run for their money. good on you though for considering someone else though bro, props as.

Yeah, haven't quite decided how the console thing will work. We'll probably have some 360s and some ps3s, and hopefully have enough sticks for permanent setups, although if people want to use their own controllers on the system they are alloted then they can.
Becomes a bit tricky when 1 person has 360 controller and 1 has a ps3 controller, but I guess they will just have to deal with whatever system they are given to use. At the arcade you can't pick your sticks...

In the situation where one wants to go ps3 controller, and one wants to go xbox controller, maybe force them both to use a stick so that theyre at an even disadvantage?

This will be the first NZism, sponsored tournament. As much as Flux and I would love to enter the tournament, and appreciate your guys concern, this needs to look and appear professional to ensure that sponsors are willing to work with us in the future.
This is only the beginning of something that can be much larger. And I am proud and excited to be involved in this tournament as an organizer/staff.
Yeah, for us it's just feels kinda stink cause we think of you guys as mates more than some tourney organisers. (I just wanted to see people laugh at Lenny picking Gen before they died)

Although in saying so, I have seen events with proper sponsors and such having organizers attending, all that matter is how you organize it to make it happen.

Its more the fact that it is the first one we are having more than anything. Get a couple under our belts without having to worry about playing "in" the tourney as well.
Give the participants and the sponsors return on investment.

Personally I also don't want the stress of having to perform in a tournament when I should really be concentrating on running everything. I predict it's going to be an order of magnitude more difficult than the last one was to organise, so I want as few distractions as possible.
Might help for most of us (forum regulars) to pre-pay aswell. It took forever to get all the brackets sorted last time, and most of the players that i imagine would be seeded are on this site anyway, so it might help to get as much of that shit done beforehand as we can.

Andy is handling more of the sponsor/advertising sort of organisation, Lenny and I are going to be the 'on-the-day' organisers, so there's not really much incentive to stop Andy entering.

At the first tournament we had one projector setup for SFIV casuals. Not sure if we'll do that again, possibly. It's certainly useful to have a place that people can warm up.

I agree Alan, though Ben (Toomeke) suggested a pro-scrub team premise, which really could work. Though determining who's pro and who's scrub is another headache altogether lol.
Also: I wondered if it would be appropriate to post some questions regarding some of the finer details oon the upcoming tournament in a seperate threa for you organisers to answer. There's been a bit of conversation about the specifics among some of the PSN crew and it'd be good to have a Q&A thread, with your approval.
Couldn't we just have an exhibition match involving the top 4 or 8 from the tournament? Then just have a 2v2 or 4v4 match? Would be interesting to watch. Give them 10 - 15 min to setup a game plan.

Yeah, that promotes another problem though, because the guys that play to win will still play to win in team tourney - and they won't be interested unless they can make their own teams with other people that play to win. So on one hand they don't participate, and on the other they kind of mess it up for everyone else.

We are still thinking about flying over to Auckland for a small sight-seeing/gaming visit, to see how things are done in the gaming scene in NZ.

Does anyone know any cheap hotels/motels/hostels/underneath a bridge nearby from the venue where we could crash? Just for sleeping and showering purposes, nothing fancy.
Also, where exactly IS the venue?
All I see is RvB, K Rd Auckland.
For a foreigner, I have no idea what RvB is, where K Rd is, or how far from the Auckland airport they are. It would be our first trip to NZ, so we want to ask someone for some guidence.

As Toomeke staetd there are many backpackers around you can stay for decent prices, I would suggest someonewhere in CBD, the airport is about 30-40 min drive from CBD where the venue is.

Having international players really increases the Hype for an event, hence we were lucky enough to have Justin Wong come to OHN a couple years back.
We had 8 different games being played, and he won ALL of them, (except Tekken Tag, where he came 2nd).
We didnt mind him winning over all out $$, just the hype of him being there and meeting international players that share the same passion is great fun in itself.

^ I was making a post about this but you beat me to it. The only direction I can see our game going after playing these guys is up. An Oceanic tourney in the future would definitely increase our chances of seeing some of the legendary players

if your standard is near him then good entertainment will be had by all, and if not - your players will learn and he can win money to sponsor a trip to japan/evo (or whatever).
Please let the Aussies come. I don't mind even if I am making the stick lol. I would really like to get a grasp of how good we are. The opportunity to play better players is a hell of alot more important to me than prize money. There is always second place lol

Consider the foreigners as special invitees
They can compete as normal but the Custom stick goes to the highest placed NZ resident as well as the title of National champion.
This is quite common in many sports.
Though if they win they are still considered the Tournament champ & maybe get a certificate :)

If any Australian players want to enter, they are welcome to, however we're not going to change everything because of it. Maybe if there are enough entrants we can have a prize pot, but the current entry fee is to take care of venue hire + prize costs. It's too late to just cancel the prizes and make it a prize pot, probably.
I can't really see what more we can do until the day of the tournament and we know how many entrants (and therefore how much money) are there.

I totally agree with Lenny, Prizes won't change so stop debating over this.
Nothing will change, Aussies are welcome to join and that is FINAL. This is a chance for us to see what we are unable to locally, open your eyes, this is a oppertunity for you folks to learn and share skills and passion.
If Bomb does win we can change the faceplate of the stick to something else, simple.

Ive competed in plenty of National events with Australian invitees and they certainly didn't come for the prizes - but for the experience and help fuel / foster the trans Tasman rivalry (all good fun).
Last thing you want to do is treat this like NZ golf and Tiger woods - where they had to pay him heaps to entice him over & resulted in a rather big loss for the event.
It will be great if a group do come, really give our top players something to measure themselves against. Then hopefully we can send a group to theirs.

Yeah Marc bro Kev is really good, but as Andy said he can play anyone. His Ryu was insane, his Sagat is unstoppable, his Chun li is broke, and his Gief is sickness. I think Kev is a great analytical player, he's the most adaptive player I've ever fought, and his fundamentals are probabaly the best in NZ, ATM. Plus, he's fun as to watch, even playing Geif, the guy does some magic shit with that big bowzer.

Gino's Blanka has got loads of work, too predictable most of teh time. The reason Kevin had a hard time was because of the char matchup and his experience with Blanka's play.
James you are right about Keving being very adaptive and loads of potential in SF. He is one that I have always given teh thumbs up as he's got style in his game play, looks very pro :D Just my 2 cents :)

... I suggest you look into what "poke strings" and "combos" means in street fighter IV
Its not impossible to do 5 hit poke strings, you have to time them BANG ON to make sure they combo, and if your not confident enough in your timing you either need to play 100 more hours in training mode... or block more?
The choice is yours.
I have a nice 5 hit poke string with chun and only one of those is crouching light kick, but I dont play that game against Ryu out of respect for how good New Zealands ryu's are and how scared I am of the whiff punishes.
You cant mash SRK out of a combo, and if you cant combo, it's your own fault.

So yeah, pretty much the only one from your friends who isn't seeded is Cody, but he probably will be for the following tourney.

All I can say is the more tournaments you enter the better chance you have of being seeded (if you do well of course). No tournaments = no chance for seeding. No surprise there!

I wish I had the days off from the kids to compete more, they always seem to fall on a saturday, and there's like a 5% chance of me getting a baby sitter for the day. . . I have my boys on the weekends so yeah, sucky for being consistently competitive in tourneys. I had to book in with the sitters months in advance for this tourney lol!
BTW my eldest plays Blanka, I'm a train him for nats next year. . . there's no age cut off right? ;) he'll be 5 then lol!

Spacing out the top players within that one big bracket is what we are talking about.
Depending on numbers teh spacing will increase therefore more seeded players will be required.

Oh, I know exactly how seeding works and effects brackets, but it doesn't break things up into conceptually 'more' brackets.
The way i understood we were doing it was that we were having a bunch of different stations, each of which was running essentially an individual dbl elim bracket. (Pools, essentially)
Top 2 from each moved forward into the semis etc.
The same way EVO does it.

Precisely. The tournament maker software should make this pretty trivial to set up.
There will be (hopefully, since I can't control it) one main setup with a vid cam pointed at it that we'll hand pick matches 'of interest' to play on. There may or may not be other cameras on other setups as well, depends how many show up.
As a general point, anyone that wants to capture footage by any means do so, bring a vid cam or record with your cellphones or whatever. The more coverage the better, as long as it ends up on our youtubes or whatever in the end.
I'm assuming that people won't be wandering off very much, and they will ask if they have a match coming up soon before going off, because people will be dqed if they aren't around when they need to be. This is going to need the cooperation of the players to work smoothly.
I'll be bringing my camera as usual. Looking for something beaster but I think my little camera will have to do :3

AND if they both want sticsk but their stick are on the wrong plateform then we give them a genuine TE stick to use for both on the plateform that is for that match. no arguements there.
say: I have a ps3 stick but the other player has a xbox stick and the plateform we are playing is is ps3, then he will have to use another stickrather than his own. We can't mix and macth plateform to suit every player, its a chance what plateform your match is running on.

As the community grows, youre naturally going to be encompassing a more diverse group of people. The only thing that could ruin that shit at this point would be (God Forbit) if RVB burns down, closes, or suffers any sort of unlikely disaster that would result in the tourney not taking place. Ive got some fucking HYPE for that shit. And im pretty HYPE all the time (im nowhere near Euan at this point, but im well up there). Ask anyone that knows about it. Its gonna be fuckin awesome.

It's not like there won't be anything run for SFIV in the future, we've already signalled intent to run 2on2 team tourneys every second month or so, and those ones WILL have cash pot prize, so WILL be worth entering!
And of course there's next year's tourney... which won't be THAT far away tbh...

And regarding hype dying down, it's easy to see why, this version of the game is very slow, and ultras feel over powered, certain characters feel very imbalanced.
But it could and will keep going for 15 years, and it could and will get relooked at by capcom like every other street fighter, and they can and will make it better.
2v2 is an awesome idea.
Its so much more fun than just 1v1, so much more fun.

I'm a full-time student. Doing honour of mechanical engineering is pretty tough for an asian like me. And I got hook into BB and computer games more than sf4. I don't mean to disappoint anyone. SF4 is a great game and well balanced. But I still enjoy BB more. I love charging in, breaking through enemy's defend, doing all sort of combo & confusion and in the end, die like a true warrior :D. SF4 is more about zonning and strategy and you have to play pretty defensive also.

I'll say once again, that seeding just means these players are less likely to play each other early in the bracket - nothing more. Any of you unseeded people could be matched against any of them, so if you think you should have been seeded you can get your wish next tourney by beating them and then placing somewhere at the end :) And as always, you'll have to play the best people regardless if you're going to win anyway.
Also depending on the number of entrants fewer people could be seeded than this ranked 11.

Oh, and I've actually just been fiddling with some brackets in the tourney software, and it doesn't let me do quite what I was hoping (specify the first 11 and then have 'random' after that) - the closest it can do to what I want is specify three 'skill' groups, so I'd put 1-5 into 'expert', 6-11 into 'novice', and everyone else into 'beginner'. It seems to do a pretty reasonable job though, assigns byes as I'd expect. It just means that Kevin may not be in position #1, simon #2 and mike #3 etc. The result is pretty much the same though.
Just thought I'd let you guys know, to maintain transparency.
edit: scratch that, I've actually worked out a way to sort the entries in the different skill brackets, so that's sweet.
